And the U.K. is so much the poorer for it, both economically and socially.

I assume that people who say travelling to Europe is just as easy as it was before aren’t taking their dog with them. Not sure about the difficulty aspect but do know it’s quite expensive getting the necessary paperwork from vets.

maddyone Mon 24-Jun-24 13:54:59

I don’t have a dog Maybee and never took my cat abroad when I had one. I think Joseann takes her dog regularly to her house in France.

What does ‘getting back our sovereignty’ mean, exactly?

Ha! Never had an answer to that one. Maybe it provoked some thoughts of Land of Hope an Glory / This sceptered isle and all that.

Something appealing about " getting back"

As an aside, I’m off to a version of Last Night of the Proms here and I am sure they will play that and we’ll all wave pommy flags. Good fun. I love that music.

Never mind what it means. It sounded so good at the time as did "take back control".

"Tells it as it is"

‘Take back control’ are the mega rich who can persuade people in power to do want they want, to save their own money.

Yes, it was a bit of a pain to start with and costly for dogs to travel, but there's always ways round things. Your friendly French vet will be happy to issue your dog or cat with a French passeport if you give him some random address in France. They hold the form signing and silly rules in as much contempt as we do.
Bon voyage!

It has to be remembered that this corrupt government hae betrayed the Brexit vote. They have deliberately kept us tied to many EU rules. We have been able to do deals with other countries, but our hands are still tied. They haven't had the guts to leave the ECHR which is ruining our country. We still haven't got back our Sovereignty, so it is a myth that we are worse off for Brexit when in actual fact, full Brexit has not been implemented. We are far worse off with EU rules.

What is "Sovereignty"?

The ECHR has nothing to do with the EU. Or trading. Or travel.

Why is it "ruining out country? What in Brexit has not been fully implemented?

What "rules" are we still tied to that stop us doing deals?

Well they told us we held all the cards regarding trade deals if we voted leave so they didn’t think that there would be a problem. Can anyone remind me as to what amazing trade deals we have signed?

Wyllow3 Mon 24-Jun-24 18:17:05

I keep on asking that but replies on deals of any significance there have been none.

maddyone Mon 24-Jun-24 18:25:12

Right, you all keep asking and so I asked MrGoogle who very kindly told me that the UK has struck 70 trade deals since Brexit. I didn’t bother to research which countries because those who are asking are the ones who want to know, so they can look themselves. Anyway, I voted remain, so I’m not even trying to justify anything. I’m just fed up of posters keeping saying where are all these trade deals. There are apparently 70 if you’re interested.

Oreo Mon 24-Jun-24 18:47:50

I get the feeling that posters aren’t really interested in trade deals or the fact that for millions of us life hasn’t changed in the last eight years but rather they enjoy rehashing bitterness caused in 2016.
Crying, because of the decision to leave the EU, either for two hours or two days is mind boggling.
Will there be a nine year anniversary of tears and a ten year one I wonder.

But they promised these things. That’s why people voted for them.

70 trade deals?

"Since Brexit, the UK has signed trade deals and agreements in principle with about 70 countries and one with the EU.

However, the majority of these are simply "rollovers" - meaning they copied the terms of deals the UK previously had when it was an EU member, rather than creating new trading arrangements.

And some of them are with countries with which the UK does very little trade."

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-47213842

How much has trade dropped since Brexit?

"By the end of 2023, goods trade had shrunk to levels not seen since 2015.

This isn't just part of a general slowing of goods trade around the world –

the UK's goods exports and imports have contracted by 13.2 per cent and 7.4 per cent since 2019, by far more than any other G7 country.28"

MayBee70 Mon 24-Jun-24 19:08:42

Yes. I was just going to say aren’t many of them just replacing previous trade deals. How much time, effort and money has that cost the country. And there still isn’t a trade deal with India is there? And aren’t farmers unhappy about the trade deal with New Zealand.

Oreo I think people are interested in how they have noticed when things are different because of Brexit if it affects them. They think if the continuing impact on their lives.
In the same way that, every time DH’s pension statement appears we remember when Gordon Brown robbed the pensions of millions of pensioners and that still affects us now.

I think quite a few people are interested in the effect that Brexit has had on other people's lives, too. You make it sound as though Remain voters are entirely self interested.

M0nica Mon 24-Jun-24 19:27:07

people think they are unaffected by Brexit because the downside is not something that goes up like a rocket or affects them like a doubling of income tax.

But that doesn't mean that they are not affected. The loss of investment in science and technological research, the breakdown of research teams as projects go unfunded, affect us in the long term by slowing economic growth and means that because we have no companies at the cutting edge of technology in any field, we cannot attract the best scientists from overseas to join us, so we drift into a little economic back water.

Inward investment from outside the EU, from which we have benefitted in the past, will now go to other EU countries. This means new jobs not materialising.

£350 million going into the NHS every week. Over £18 billion a year in 2015. Nearer £24 billion in 2024. Where is that? Is there anyone in the country not afected by the shambles the NHS is currently?

I haven't wept a tear for the result of the EU referendum. But what i do expect as a citizen of a country which has always prided itself on its capacity for playing fair, is a realisation by those who supported Brexit, is that their maajority was wafer thin and with almost as many people voting for as voting against, the views of those who opposed Brexit should be acknowledged and taken into account in negotiations.

HousePlantQueen Mon 24-Jun-24 19:51:32

I do hope that you knew the difference between the ECJ and ECHR before you voted to leave the EU Judybloom.

Crazy isn’t it? I can only liken this crying business to people on Reality TV shows who are voted out or poor losers in a talent competition. 🤣🤣🤣

Whatever the result on election day I wouldn’t dream of crying!
