Horses are big animals with thick hides, big backsides and very hard feet. They can also easily lift you off the ground with one affectionate head toss. I was concussed when my horse tossed his head and hit my nose. He said he didn't notice. But he did seem a little sorry as I sat at his feet trying to staunch the blood! They don't all realise how fragile us humans are.

Princess Anne is up there for most of us as a hard working, plain talking, likeable member of the RF, who did a good job with her own children
Horse riding women tend to be resilient. They’ve hit the deck, been kicked or bitten and often walk with a slight limp as a result of their love of these huge gentle, u]not always predictable animals
I’ve just heard on radio 4b she’s expected to remain in hospital till the end of the week. It’s a serious injury

If you’re standing in front of a horse and it kicks forward its hoof goes towards your heart area. It missed my friend by a fraction. He was very shaken. Anyway, that’s what he told me and he was far more experienced with horses than I was. Also it’s probably more unexpected so evasive action can’t be taken. One minute she was sweet as anything and then her hoof shot straight forward at him. I can remember it as if it was yesterday, we were both so shocked.

I wish Princess Anne a speedy recovery.
She's a great rider and a very hard working Royal .
I have a great deal of respect for her .

I also have sustained an injury from a horse when not riding .
My neighbour was afraid of her husband's horse and asked me to put it away for the night .
I'd ridden him the day before .
Without any warning he lunged forward , bit and kicked me .
I ended up in hospital - feeling shaken up having never had an experience like that before .
And one of my friends , who was brought up with horses and is a superb horse woman was head butted by her mare .
Eight of her front teeth were loosened and had to be replaced .

From what I read she was head butted by a horse whilst out walking. Princess Anne isn`t a softie, she`ll soon be up and about.

Indeed, NfkDumpling - a friend suffered a broken nose after her horse accidentally hit her in the face when he shook his head as she was grooming him.

And I bet he looked perplexed and bewildered as to what the fuss was all about!

As there is no such thing as private A&E in this country, even the royals have no alternative.

I don’t think she’ll be on a ward at all. I think she’ll be in a private room, probably with security posted outside. Nonetheless she was taken to the emergency department at the hospital and treated by the NHS in much the same way as any of us would be. I doubt we’d get a private room though, and in fact when I had a rather nasty concussion some years ago, after being checked over at the hospital, I was discharged home to recover there.

Most NHS hospitals including Southmead have facilities for private patients so I don't think Princess Anne is likely to be on an NHS ward.

Anyway, I wish her well and hope she makes a speedy recovery.

I don't know anything about this, Joseann, but I admit my first thought would be a riding accident. It happens to the best of riders from time to time.. Perhaps, like her mother, she wasn't wearing a helmet...

But please, everyone. This is my supposition, not fact.

I believe she was walking, not riding but the incident involved a horse in some way.

My guess would be the horse was loose in a field.

I expect we'll never know the detail, but in my experience horses in fields are usually very peaceful animals, not given to knocking people over...(though they may mug you for a titbit).

OTOH, I suffered for months from being barged by a horse I was leading who was startled by something (my fault, I wasn't paying enough attention). Also when my horse gave me an affectionate 'nudge' and slammed me into a door..

It has been stressed on the BBC that Princess Anne was walking, not riding. She was taken to an NHS hospital in Bristol where she is expected to stay for a few days.
This is why I love our NHS. It treats everyone from the poorest to the royals.

Princess Anne has mild concussion, I believe, and spent the night in hospital for observation. She is a stalwart of our Royal Family and as tough as old boots, much like her Dad. She will be back into the swing of things very soon but in the meantime I wish her well. One of my favourite Royals.

BBC says the cause is unconfirmed but is consistent with contact with a horses head whatever that means.
