Trans women have a cervix according to David Lammy.

We are all well aware of David Lammy and his disrespect towards the women who campaigned for what is now the position of his party. Many of us havent forgotten the contempt he showed, I wonder if he now thinks Starmer is a 'dinosaur'.

Historically the LP have been dreadful when it comes to trans rights versus women's rights, and I have found that difficult to reconcile with my hopes that they will otherwise work for a fairer society. I've clung to the belief that this is another area where people try to trip them up, so they are careful to say nothing that could be used by the trans lobby to discredit them with a 'Gotcha'. As many of us are aware, the twisting of words is something that this lobby does a lot, and whilst I would have preferred a more robust response I could sort of understand the strategy.

However, it seems that now that the election is getting closer they can be less guarded, and Keir Starmer has clarified his position, which is that women need single sex spaces. Again, I'd like this to go further, but he has said (on the last Leaders' debate) that this means biological sex, so that is several steps forward from where we were.

I'm not excusing David Lammy. I feel strongly about this issue and his comments infuriated me. But I do understand that this is a tricky subject to discuss with people who want No Debate, which was the position at the time that he made them. No Debate meant that there was no discussion possible. You either risked being written off as a transphobe or you capitulated, and the last thing the LP needed at that time was to have everything eclipsed by the trans issue. I think the chances are that he expressed himself clumsily - of course he knows what a cervix is - even if he's never had a biology lesson, which I doubt, he's a father!

Drama = interpreting a comment in an untrue way and posting about on the internet

Truth = pointing that out

Galaxy Fri 28-Jun-24 21:14:24

No we havent but crack on with the dramatics.

VioletSky Fri 28-Jun-24 21:03:36

The statement is correct, Trans men exist, as do women without a cervix as well as intersex people

You have placed your own lens in front of this statement and like many others, given no thought to those who do not meet your own personal requirements for the acceptability of other human beings

Lammy said that in 2021.

In 2024, we hear politicians, of almost all parties, who are asked about women & girls, and who immediately start to waffle about trans people.
They seem unable to make any sensible comments in answer to the questions they are asked.

Fir instance, the first question in Woman's Hour Election Special.

Don't worry. I think that David Lammy is likely to be Foreign Secretary, not Health Secretary!

Phew!! That was a close one. I feel so much better now for knowing that 😁

Any post that uses the word cisgender is not particularly informative to those of is who dont subscribe to the belief system of gender.

Galaxy Fri 28-Jun-24 20:34:08

David Lammy always shown at the time is a misogynist. We were 'dinosaurs hoarding rights' This debate has been informative in terms of highlighting who the misogynists are.

A 'neo vagina' is a surgically made tube, probably made from a piece of colon. it will have a dead end, and not a cervix.

The cervix is the neck of the uterus of a female/woman.

Whatever surgical procedures a male/.man has for his trans identity - it is not a vagina.

Thanks for your informative post Merion.

Thanks for full info, Merion.

It's utter nonsense but it was said (and widely covered on here and in the rest of the media) in 2021.

Dragging it up now is just a last ditch attempt to discredit any Labour politician.

It's no secret that I think it was a moronic thing to say, but it's tiresome to see it raise its head this week.

Mollygo Fri 28-Jun-24 19:59:16

Well he’s in the right party to hold that belief. Although to be fair, he didn’t, as some parties do, claim that you can change sex.

A vaginoplasty is the surgical creation of a female organs from the tissue from other organs, e.g. the male organs or the bowel, to create a neo-vagina and a neo-cervix.

It is possible to develop malignancies in these neo-organs.

This is what Cancer Research say:

Trans women do not have a cervix, so don't need to consider cervical screening.

Trans women who have had a vaginoplasty, which is a type of genital reconstructive surgery, the term 'neo-cervix' is sometimes used to describe the tissue at the deepest part of the vagina. This area is made of a different type of cells to the cervix in a cisgender woman. The risk of cancer in the neo-cervix for a trans woman is much lower than the risk of cervical cancer in a cis woman.

Cancer of the vagina in trans women is very rare. The type of tissue used to create the vagina may affect the risk of cancer, and other complications. If you are a trans woman who has had a vaginoplasty using a loop of bowel, make sure your GP is aware of this if you experience symptoms such as vaginal discharge or bleeding.

The link is from an interview in 2021. Lammy makes it clear that he understands a cervix is something a trans woman can have following “various procedures”. And he is right save that the medical professsional call it a neo-cervix.

No, the world hasn’t gone mad. An MP, who is not a doctor, omitted a three letter prefix meaning new.

Wyllow3 Fri 28-Jun-24 19:32:02

No - just checked it out.

"While gender-affirming surgeries can create a vagina, doctors do not create a cervix during this procedure"

It was a catch question I think and Lammy would have been wiser to say,"I don't know"

Labradora Fri 28-Jun-24 17:57:15

Is this anatomically possible ?
I merely ask the question.

Sarnia Fri 28-Jun-24 16:48:01

I believe in live and let live but woke has gone completely and utterly bonkers. He is very likely to have a Cabinet job too. Heaven help us.

NotSpaghetti Fri 28-Jun-24 16:46:27

Was he thinking transmen?
Just wondering.
Haven't heard this.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 28-Jun-24 16:45:21

Perhaps he needs to return to school for an anatomy lesson?
