Historically the LP have been dreadful when it comes to trans rights versus women's rights, and I have found that difficult to reconcile with my hopes that they will otherwise work for a fairer society. I've clung to the belief that this is another area where people try to trip them up, so they are careful to say nothing that could be used by the trans lobby to discredit them with a 'Gotcha'. As many of us are aware, the twisting of words is something that this lobby does a lot, and whilst I would have preferred a more robust response I could sort of understand the strategy.
However, it seems that now that the election is getting closer they can be less guarded, and Keir Starmer has clarified his position, which is that women need single sex spaces. Again, I'd like this to go further, but he has said (on the last Leaders' debate) that this means biological sex, so that is several steps forward from where we were.
I'm not excusing David Lammy. I feel strongly about this issue and his comments infuriated me. But I do understand that this is a tricky subject to discuss with people who want No Debate, which was the position at the time that he made them. No Debate meant that there was no discussion possible. You either risked being written off as a transphobe or you capitulated, and the last thing the LP needed at that time was to have everything eclipsed by the trans issue. I think the chances are that he expressed himself clumsily - of course he knows what a cervix is - even if he's never had a biology lesson, which I doubt, he's a father!
