France Elections. I am an immigrant

Do you think Macron is paving the way for the next president, keeping in mind he cannot stand a third period?

He knew how people were thinking, especially after the European elections, therefore, thought it would be better to go to the polls sooner rather than later, while he was still in charge and be able to have some control although limited.

Marie Le Pen thinks her party's 28-year-old leader will have a say over France’s armed forces and the president's powers would be reduced.

There is a large divide between those living in cities or large towns and those living in the countryside. When we moved to rural Suffolk we only ever saw white faces whereas in Ipswich there are about 10 ethnic minorities living in and around the town.

In London in the 60s and 70s there was a wide range of food shops and restaurants of other nations which were enjoyed by everyone.

Why do you make " only ever saw white faces" sound like a resounding insult. We are a majority white country. If you went to rural Africa, as I did, you would only ever see black faces, as I would expect.

Pretty amazing really - he is a better politician than perhaps people give him credit for.

Starmer will be pleased.

I just put it on the wrong thread ( 100 Days)
Good news isn’t it that France has gone to the left, the new popular front, I know it’s only the exit poll but looking good.

Mamie Sun 07-Jul-24 19:21:35

There has been a lot of agreement of third parties dropping out to promote tactical voting in a straight two candidate race.
Also posters saying, remember 1940 and similar sentiments.
It will be messy but essentially I think Macron's gamble has paid off.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 07-Jul-24 19:16:10

That is what I was thinking casdon .

Casdon Sun 07-Jul-24 19:13:55

It said on our news that there was a 60% turnout by 5pm, so by the time the polls closed presumably somewhat higher - the threat of the right must have galvanised the electorate into action.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 07-Jul-24 19:13:47

Good-oh. Makes life a lot easier for everyone else in Europe

Ha ha ha! The left alliance first, Macron party second and Le Pen / Bardella 3rd! It will still be a coalition government.

Is that the result? What a huge relief! I

It is the predicted outcome, but these polls are normally very accurate because of the way the system works.

At least you had the advantage of speaking French, pascal30, if I assume correctly. It's ridiculous how many Brits go to live in France but can't be bothered to master the language.

pascal30 Thu 04-Jul-24 15:14:47

As someone whose mother was French, I love France but I think having family and friends there makes a huge difference. I prefer the UK because of all the cultural and artistic options here.. and I believe it is also less expensive here..

Joseann Thu 04-Jul-24 13:06:08

You made me smile, Witzend, (though I might have recognised myself in that category 20 or so years ago!). People bang on about how everything is so much better in France because often they want to justify their decision to having moved there.
I knew English people who had good jobs back home, but in France, they had to resort to working in abattoirs. Or they cleaned gîtes. They would then moan that food was so expensive in France, and that they couldn't afford a ferry trip back home etc. But hey, life is so much better in France! Only if you can afford to live comfortably.

Witzend Thu 04-Jul-24 09:14:56

Nasty cynic that I am, I can’t help thinking how the political shenanigans across the channel might at least quieten that tedious cohort that is always banging on about how everything is so much better in France.

Crikey. If you read all the thread you will see where I live.
I was referring to starmer being a preference even if he is dull, as described on this forum by people who live in england.
How on earth did it get so misunderstood?

MaizieD Wed 03-Jul-24 21:03:09

We know more about English politics than fancythat does

(goodness, I'm making a real b*lls up of this😱)

MaizieD Wed 03-Jul-24 21:01:09

Sorry, missed this.

I also think that: The grannetters who live in England and know the politics better than I do refers to the comment about Starmer, she's explaining who she means by 'you lot' in that comment.

Who is you lot halfpint1?

The grannetters who live in England and know the politics better than I do

Do you live in France halfpint?

The thread was started by a Gransnetter who lives in France, I believe, and several others who live in France have also contributed to the thread.

Are those who don't live there not allowed to comment on the apparent move to the right of France and other European countries?

Looking at halfpint's original post, it finishes: ^Makes Starmer look the better choice, dull as you lot
say he is ^

I'm reading that as solely her noting that we people who live in the UK are saying that Starmer is dull.

I don't see it in any way criticising us for commenting on French politics.

This was on Twitter.
"According to 1st poll just released after the 2nd round "stand-downs" and full candidate-list was closed yesterday, Le Pen's Far Right RN doesn't come anywhere near the absolute majority it would need to govern (289 seats)
and is predicted to get only 190 - 220 seats"

Joseann Wed 03-Jul-24 18:56:33

Thank you, Mamie. A real race against time.

Mamie Wed 03-Jul-24 18:55:32

It was Tuesday evening I think.

Joseann Wed 03-Jul-24 18:54:05

By what date do the candidates have to decide if they are going to step down, does anyone know?
