Anyone else feel a sense of impending doom that we’ll have a Labour government tomorrow?

I’d like to feel optimistic that things will improve I really would - I was pleased Blair got in in 97, but this feels different some how?
I’m kind of dreading the next - god knows how many years - under Labour.
Oh well.

Careful what you wish for has been said. Those who support reform uk should bear that phrase in mind. Farage says openly that he wants to get rid of the nhs. He does not believe in free at the point of need.

Rubbish Farage said it will always be free at the point of delivery.

Who is actually voting for Labour in the real world

Well, nicenanny your question will be answered by the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Who is actually voting for Labour in the real world? I know on here they have their fans but on social media not many want a Labour government yet the polls say otherwise, it's very strange, could the polls be wrong and will Labour voters bother getting out to vote if they think Labour have won already?

I assume you realise that your "social media" isn't the same as somebody else's "social media".

Under the last Labour government there were 35 food banks. Under the current (not for long) Tory government there are 3,572. They should be ashamed.

You do understand that what you see on social media reflects your activity online, and is therefore no more meaningful or accurate than my social media (which tells me a very different story)?

Mouse I’m not worried about Reform because I know they won’t form a government, and probably get very few MPs, if any.

maddyone Thu 04-Jul-24 11:44:05

Maybee there are indeed doctors who can’t get work. My daughter is currently working in New Zealand but would like to return with her children (we don’t know if this will be possible due to her ex (abusive) husband) but she is worried about getting a job as a GP if and when she returns. And yet we have a shortage of GPs!!

That won’t happen, but the offer needs to be much improved. I hope the new government will take the junior doctors seriously and make a realistic offer.

I agree.

I also think that paying all the public sector workers whose pay as been eroded by the tories over the past 14 years would be so good for the economy. It would get some more money circulating, support businesses and ultimately improve the tax take.

It could also attract back some of the qualified workers we so desperately need into education and the NHS.

GrannyGravy I’ve been wondering throughout the run up to the election where all the doctors, teachers, and nurses are going to come from, given that it took my daughter twelve years to qualify as a GP, teachers take either three or four years to qualify, nurses the same, and even the most junior doctor (F1 and F2) takes five or six years at university, before they are able to start work as an F1 and a year later an F2. These people are not going to magically appear and be in our surgeries just waiting for the green light from a new government and then hey presto, we’ll all be able to get a GP appointment on the day it is needed.
I suspect we’ll poach some from abroad, which I’ve always thought immoral when their own countries need them so much. But it won’t supply the numbers quoted.

A recent Ch4 news report said there were many locum doctors that couldn’t get work and they couldn’t understand why. My daughter started teaching under a Labour government but left teaching under the Conservatives due to lack of funding. She wants to return to teaching when conditions improve under a Labour government.I’m sure there are many more like her.

I don't feel impending doom, no.

Casdon if you count the Rwandan plan as a Conservative promise, that’s very easy to work out. Definitely held up by HoL. There’ll be more in future … perhaps not so obvious.

JaneJudge Thu 04-Jul-24 11:33:14

and they also need to train more of them, something which hasn't been happening over the past decade

The junior doctors are certainly not disgraceful. Their pay has been degraded by 35% over the last fourteen years because government wanted healthcare on the cheap. Healthcare doesn’t come cheap. The junior doctors know that and are quite rightly asking for pay restoration. That won’t happen, but the offer needs to be much improved. I hope the new government will take the junior doctors seriously and make a realistic offer.

As I said grow stuff - careful what you wish for. And actually I am a very optimistic person normally!

jan1956 Thu 04-Jul-24 11:28:56

yes doom we are doomed how can they say they will help nhs when they are opening the floodgates to what is coming from France? they are going to build how many houses on our once green and peasant land How can this be anything but doom???

growstuff Thu 04-Jul-24 11:28:03

Optomistic1

Oh yes. I feel we are all doomed - well anyone who has savings, owns a house, is a pensioner. God help us. Careful what the Labour voters wish for that is all I can say ... other than I really feel very depressed thinking of seeing the gormless , rabbit in a head light Keir starman stood on the steps of no 10 tmw with Our Angela stood behind him... god help us - it's only tmw that we will start to find out what they will really do.

Wow! What a pessimist!

David49 Thu 04-Jul-24 11:25:42

Actually I’m looking forward to a change of government Labour is not a problem for me, I’ve been in business for 50 yrs plus and both Labour governments served me well, Thatcher wasn’t great and the last 10 yrs have been flat. I don’t think business has anything to fear as long as the policies are clear.

With a big win predicted sterling is stable I’m looking forward to a steady improvement - yes I am an optimist.

Optomistic1 Thu 04-Jul-24 11:25:11

Absolutly nothing will improve in 100 days other than maybe the disgraceful junior drs calling their strike off because the BMA are happy that their Labour puppets are now in power and they can call the shots ( and don't think they care about patients )
Labour have no chance of creating extra GP appointments, extra maths teachers, extra houses because all these things take time and money which they don't have. Meanwhile immigration and benefits will just spiral out of control .
They will spend 5 years blaming the Tories every single day for their failings. It is so depressing

maddyone Thu 04-Jul-24 11:23:20

Incidentally I’m fully aware that the Conservative government has failed to deliver things it has promised, in particular the pledges Sunak made when he took over the premiership.

Optomistic1 Thu 04-Jul-24 11:20:58

Starmer !!!
