Anyone else feel a sense of impending doom that we’ll have a Labour government tomorrow?

I’d like to feel optimistic that things will improve I really would - I was pleased Blair got in in 97, but this feels different some how?
I’m kind of dreading the next - god knows how many years - under Labour.
Oh well.

Thanks for explaining MaizieD.

And thanks for explaining Iam too. I want services to improve as much as everyone else, but realistically I don’t think it’s possible in 100 days. I’m on a waiting list myself, for spinal surgery and am compelled to live in daily pain, but I know that my situation won’t change anytime soon, because I know there won’t be a large number of new doctors anytime soon.

He'd like to come and meet us, but he thinks he'd blow our minds...

Starman?😂Again?

Optomistic1 Thu 04-Jul-24 11:15:36

Oh yes. I feel we are all doomed - well anyone who has savings, owns a house, is a pensioner. God help us. Careful what the Labour voters wish for that is all I can say ... other than I really feel very depressed thinking of seeing the gormless , rabbit in a head light Keir starman stood on the steps of no 10 tmw with Our Angela stood behind him... god help us - it's only tmw that we will start to find out what they will really do.

Never overestimate the person in the street and their interest in politics 😄so many people either have zero interest in the subject or are totally ignorant of the political parties, their leaders, and their manifestos.I think it was Callistemon213 who wrote yesterday of a few people being interviewed in Wales and on being shown a pic of Keir Starmer said ‘ it’s Starman isn’t it?’ And the other people saying they’ve never heard of him.
I think Labour will do well in spite of this 😁but really you feel this time almost anything could happen.

She hasn't done anything wrong.

She was investigated, nothing came to light.

I'm not fearful of a person of integrity.

Iam64 time will tell- how about an honest look at how many times the next Labour government fails to deliver on its promises? And why and then ask if this is democracy in action.

I like that idea. Has anybody got the energy to start us off with a resume of how the last government has achieved against their pledges, then we can do it the correct way with a comparator?

eazybee Thu 04-Jul-24 11:11:14

I am genuinely fearful of any government that thinks Angela Rayner is suitable to be a Member of Parliament, let alone hold high office.

Iam64 Thu 04-Jul-24 11:08:32

I’m in the being realistic gang maddyone. I’d be negative and anxious if I thought we were about to elect another Conservative government. The total lack of concern for public services, the push towards privatisation has caused real damage. It will take years to re-build.

"Country before party, always" will do for me, as Starmer has promised.

That's a whole heap better than we have had.

I don’t live in a right wing bubble, or a left wing bubble, because I live in the real world. I’m a realist.

I don't think that you said anything about a Labour government being 'Corbyn inspired', maddyone

Which was what I was primarily referring to.

I'm very worried about a Labour win. We're not well off by any means but I read about the extra taxes they are considering on highish value houses (we bought ours 40 years ago so are asset rich, cash poor), inheritance tax, taxing State Pension etc. The extra power to be given to the Unions so they'll be given any pay rises they ask for, votes for 16 & 17 year olds. I could go on. I'm interested in politics but most folk aren't and will vote Labour just to get rid of the Tories as they don't consider the cost of paying folk's wages to stay at home during Covid, their energy bills and the cost of helping the war in Ukraine. Things are improving but there's not enough time for folk to feel it in their pocket before the election. I hope if Labour gets in it'll be for the shortest time possible.

All this grumbling already that a Labour government won’t be able to magic up teachers, dentists or doctors. Surely no-one believes in miracles. What we hope is that a Labour government will attempt to repair the huge damage caused by this government.

It’s not grumbling Iam, it’s called being realistic. I admire the wish, I realise it’s not possible.

No government can deliver more GP appointments, more NHS appointments, or more teachers within 100 days. I very much doubt that they can provide more of many of these over the five years that a Parliament runs, due to the length of time it takes to train these professionals. More could be provided by the immoral practice of poaching the educated groups from other countries, many of them poor, and in desperate need of their own professionals to support their own services and economies. But none of it can be delivered in 100 days, which I have also seen claimed, and so no, it’s not hyperbole.

Visgir1 Thu 04-Jul-24 11:01:25

I am worried.. Hoping they don't get a big majority.

I am not grumbling.

I think Sir Starmer and his Cabinet will quickly realise that the world is a different place to when Labour were last in power.

They have made lots of promises, they have also been surprisingly silent on a lot of issues.

If they manage to sort out the NHS, Schools and Care System without alienating middle earners, hats off to them.

ronib Thu 04-Jul-24 10:59:15

I have to agree with the Reform Party that the Uk needs to revise its whole system of government. I don’t know how mind you….although reducing House of Lords, limiting power of First Division Civil Service and presumably tinkering with the Bank of England to enable any elected government to govern.
Well it’s a start but won’t happen anytime soon so in the interim, expect more of the same? Labour may well win this election but who really governs this country?

growstuff Thu 04-Jul-24 10:57:50

Miracles were promised. They will not be delivered.

Miracles haven't been promised - quite the opposite.

We won't have a Labour govt tomorrow. Whatever Starmer calls it, it bears no relationship to the Labour party I have supported for years. I will just wait to see what he really has in mind, what else could I do

That's how I feel as well. A party that doesn't prioritise child poverty is not one I can get excited about.
