For those feeling nervous over the governments competence and who believe the propaganda put out by the right wing media, I thought I would start recording the day by day development of the governments activity.

Day 1
The PM appointed the cabinet, and was briefed by the permanent secretary.

The PM gave advice over urgent domestic issues needing immediate attention, as well as urgent security matters.

The Prime Minister signed off letters to the heads of the military, giving instructions over action in case of nuclear threat.

The Prime Minister will begin preparations for his NATO visit to Washington next week.

Sir Keir Starmer will have decided domestic issues over his living arrangements etc.

The Home Secretary -Yvette Cooper - killed the Rwanda plan. However it was disclosed by the Home Office that there was in fact no such plan in operation - no work had been carried out on any plan for months. So my goodness - was that one of the last lies told to the public by the previous government?

ronib Sat 06-Jul-24 08:44:20

keepingquiet veering off ? The o/p yet again was inaccurate in comments about Rwanda and the Conservative government. Don’t swallow it whole.

The cabinet will discuss the first steps to renewal

So

Economic stability - Reeves

Immigration. - Cooper

NHS waiting lists - Streeting

Junior ministerial roles will be appointed as well as government advisors - so for example Sir Patrick Vallance for advice on science and technology.

I like this idea but fear we are in for a very long thread!
It has already veered off into critiques of the civil service (note the word service here- we are going to hear this word a lot) and football!

I just hope we don't descend into posts about what people are wearing and keep it focussed on what the new government is actually doing to make this country more stable and more successful.

Yes - I agree this is really meant to be a dip in and have a look thread.

Posts about civil servants ranks😄😄 seem a bit random😄

I’m expecting a budget fairly quickly, the summer recess pushed back a week or two, there is only so much you can do in 4 weeks.

FDA legal challenge over Safety of Rwanda Act heard at Royal Courts of Justice.

I know Reform is completely enflamed about this.

No wish to derail the thread, but FDA is the Union's name.
This is from the Institute for Government website.
"Grades 6 and 7 civil servants tend to be experienced officials with significant policy responsibilities.
Senior Civil Service (SCS) is the most senior grade of the civil service made up of the senior management team. Generally, directors are ultimately responsible for the policy work of their team and director generals oversee directors and work closely with the department’s ministers. Each department also has a permanent secretary as part of the SCS who supports the minister at the head of the department, acts as the accounting officer and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the department."

End of September it is pencilled in.

I am very confused. Why is it so hard to understand that instead of permanent secretaries supporting the minister of a given department, legal challenges to Conservative policy are still being considered by the High Courts? This means that the last government was not being supported by the First Division.

Mamie Sat 06-Jul-24 09:06:07

I thought this had been discussed before and the answer was because civil servants have to act within the law.

Casdon Sat 06-Jul-24 09:07:55

I can’t see that at this stage the summer recess will be delayed, as the election wasn’t expected so many people will have made holiday arrangements, that it would cause chaos and bad feeling if that happened. I expect ministers and home office staff are bound to keep working, but there is only time for emergency legislation changes to go through parliament in the next two weeks. The Lords has already broken up for the summer.

Siope Sat 06-Jul-24 09:12:40

This is probably stating the obvious, so apologies if so, but there will be a huge amount of work, both on policy development and amended implementation, going on behind the scenes, that most of us will never even be aware of. I remember reeling slightly at just how much change (and work) there was in the immediate aftermath of Labour’s 1997 victory (my first change of government in a directly affected work environment).

robib, the Court ruled on the FDA challenge yesterday. It’s entirely legitimate for a Civil Setvice union to ask for clarity on whether government policy breaches their members’ legal responsibilities, which is all this was doing, despite GBNews consistently trying to spin it into something else.

Well Mamie the Rwandan plan has just been scrapped. So well done to the Civil Servants for blocking it in time for the Labour Party to take over. Good timing.

Interesting to see how the judiciary spin it.

ronib you are obsessed with this issue aren’t you? It can’t be more than a month since it was picked over in minute detail on a thread, where you queried every aspect of the Civil Service’s right to make a legal challenge against the government. There is no point going over the same ground yet again, when the fact is that you know the civil service was acting within the law but you don’t agree with it. It’s just a waste of everybody’s time - including your own.

ronib Sat 06-Jul-24 09:23:40

Oh dear what a thread Casdon. Guidance drawn up by Conservative ministers which told civil servants to ignore Strasbourg rulings and remove asylum seekers to Rwanda is LAWFUL.

ronib Sat 06-Jul-24 09:24:30

The Civil Service needs Reform.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 06-Jul-24 09:25:19

It’s not a waste of anybody’s time to point out why nothing had been happening on the Rwanda front for some time, because although it was discussed recently some have clearly forgotten. The OP asked whether the Rwanda plan had been one of the last lies told by the Conservative government. No, it was not and that needs to be corrected. There was a very real reason why action was suspended.

Casdon Sat 06-Jul-24 09:27:10

ronib although it’s my first instinct I am not going to blaspheme here, nor am I going to enter into another pointless discussion about your view of civil servants.

I can report that the English flag has been put above No 10 😄😄

Ahead of todays game.

The Prime Minister is a keen football fan.

If that’s the case, I applaud KS! High time the St. G flag was redeemed from being sneered at, as a symbol of racist bigotry, or else as a symbol of the thick/uneducated - or both - as it all too often has been.

Yes! 👍

People should not feel ashamed of their country's flag because some groups misappropriated it.

I’ve mentioned this on another thread, but delighted to see James Timpson appointed Minister for prisons, probation and parole.

In fact, delighted to see a range of Ministers selected for their knowledge, experience and expertise in their respective fields.

I have to say, as someone who has not been a Starmer fan, my opinion is changing as a result of his speech, Reeves’ speech, and Starmer’s decisions so far.

No, Casdon just said she won't engage with you.

You don't have to shut up, you can carry on if you wish.
Others can ignore your posts if they wish.

This is the most inexperienced Cabinet in History.
A list was posted last night of their previous backgrounds, thank goodness for the guidance of the Civil service.
Steep learning curve let's all hope they can step up to the plate.

It is rather scary, our country in the hands of such as Lammy, a Bilderburger, someone who thinks men can grow a cervix.
Cooper, whose open border stance shows the way she will go.
An Islamist and anti semite in charge of Justice. My goodness we are really doomed, and I really fear for our country.

I'm sorry to see that Thangam Debbonnaire lost her seat.

the Rwandan plan has just been scrapped

Hooray! Hallelujah! 👏👏👏

Scrapped by the court, the Civil Service, the Home Office, Keir Starmer or Uncle Tom Cobbly and all - I don’t care!

All that matters, IMO, is that a cruel, inhumane, unworkable, ridiculously expensive policy has been scrapped.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 06-Jul-24 10:11:48

I’m delighted that Emily Thornberry isn’t in the Cabinet. Awful woman.

I agree freya and Visgirl. The CS will certainly be working hard - let’s hope their pupils will be willing and able to take advice.
