For those feeling nervous over the governments competence and who believe the propaganda put out by the right wing media, I thought I would start recording the day by day development of the governments activity.

Day 1
The PM appointed the cabinet, and was briefed by the permanent secretary.

The PM gave advice over urgent domestic issues needing immediate attention, as well as urgent security matters.

The Prime Minister signed off letters to the heads of the military, giving instructions over action in case of nuclear threat.

The Prime Minister will begin preparations for his NATO visit to Washington next week.

Sir Keir Starmer will have decided domestic issues over his living arrangements etc.

The Home Secretary -Yvette Cooper - killed the Rwanda plan. However it was disclosed by the Home Office that there was in fact no such plan in operation - no work had been carried out on any plan for months. So my goodness - was that one of the last lies told to the public by the previous government?

The re-couping/covid will be very difficult, not sure how they could trace so many individuals - they'll have to target the big frauds. Will it include payouts for contracts and similar?

ronib Mon 22-Jul-24 21:54:30

Part of the £10 billion figure Yvette Cooper allocated to the Rwandan scheme includes paying one thousand civil servants to set it up. Wow that is impressive. We need a full breakdown of all the available figures asap.

Child poverty

The prime minister has endorsed comments by Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, who said that removing the cap was among measures the government would look at as part of a review into child poverty.

With a few exceptions, the cap prevents parents from claiming universal credit or child tax credit for a third child. The policy affects 1.6 million children, according to the latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions.
Many of the charities and organisations consulted by the work and pensions secretary, Liz Kendall, on the taskforce last week have called for the cap to be abolished.

“Under Labour's plans, Skills England is also due to take on new responsibilities for deciding the future direction of skills training.
The body will decide which courses should be able to benefit from funding currently reserved for creating apprenticeships, paid jobs that allow recruits to gain experience in the workplace alongside training or study.”

The only way they are going to do that is to stop wasting money sending students to university to get skills we don’t need. The current student loan scheme is massively in debt with a high proportion not being repaid.
The other issue is that 25% of working age people are not economically active - either can’t or don’t need to work, a minority are going to be working in the black economy too.

Anyone else think Yvette Cooper was on fire yesterday in the HoC?

She made complete mincemeat of James NotsoCleverly!

Casdon Tue 23-Jul-24 09:46:35

She’s very good.

ronib Tue 23-Jul-24 11:40:53

Isn’t Yvette Cooper a bit short on detail but full on rhetorically. It’s almost as if she gets carried away in the moment. £700 million one minute and £10 billion the next. Personally not my style …

DEFRA

Our new #WaterBill will make sure water bosses face personal criminal liability for lawbreaking and their bonuses are banned if they fail to meet high environmental standards.

Our immediate steps will put water companies under tough special measures as we begin to clean up Britain's waterways.

Asylum seekers.

The Bibby Stolkhoms contract will not be renewed when it runs out in January 2025.

Those currently living on the Stockholm all have appropriate papers and can be dealt with much quicker, than those who have fled without the necessary papers.

Are you in the HoC? What does style matter if she is getting on with her job, which she clearly is.

They’ll have to be dealt with by January then, how many on board living there, is it the full 400 I wonder or just a handful.

ronib Tue 23-Jul-24 18:19:30

keepingquiet why would any sane person want to be in the HoC?

Exactly why do you think that making stuff up is doing a job?

You have not been paying attention. Yvette Cooper is absolutely on top of her brief.

ronib Tue 23-Jul-24 19:02:43

varian I need to see the figures firstly for £700 million and then £10 billion.

varian Tue 23-Jul-24 19:04:35

Perhaps you could write to Yvette Cooper and ask her to explain it in simpler terms.

ronib Tue 23-Jul-24 19:07:09

varian why? I understand the simplicity of her approach. It’s the detail which is lacking.
In fact I really do wish that politicians could act in a much more professional and respectful manner.

keepingquiet Tue 23-Jul-24 20:55:37

Oh ronib this makes me choke with laughter. What detail did we get from Johnson and his over ready deal?
How was Cooper unprofessional compared to some of the Home secs (was it six in six years, or was that the chancellor- I couldn't keep up) or disrespectful.
Please stop clutching at straws and admit the grown-ups have returned.

Galaxy Tue 23-Jul-24 20:59:53

What the grown ups who have just suspended 7 of their mps for voting against them on child poverty. Those grown ups.

ronib Tue 23-Jul-24 21:09:36

keepingquiet I expect facts and not fiction in Parliament - or rather I should say, statements need to be qualified. Yvette Cooper does have a tendency to pump up …. Grown ups do not become politicians . Stop believing the hype.

ronib Tue 23-Jul-24 21:14:43

Rebecca Long-Bailey has lost the whip for 6 months for trying to alleviate child poverty … interesting. Remember her?

Urmstongran Tue 23-Jul-24 21:24:41

“Sir Keir Starmer has stripped seven Left-wing Labour backbenchers of the whip after they rebelled against the Government over the two-child benefit cap.

The MPs, including Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow chancellor John McDonnell, voted in favour of a defeated SNP amendment to the King’s Speech on Tuesday that would have called for the cap to be abolished.

The Telegraph understands the suspensions will be reviewed in six months’ time.

The other six rebels were Rebecca Long-Bailey, who Sir Keir defeated to become party leader in 2020, Richard Burgon, Zarah Sultana, Apsana Begum, Ian Byrne and Imran Hussain.”

Whitewavemark2 Tue 23-Jul-24 21:30:15

Bit daft on their part as they were pushing on an open door.

Starmer has already indicated that he is considering scrapping the cap. Now they no influence being outside the whip.

Starmer is a strong leader and they were aware of the penalty so there is no excuse.

Urmstongran Tue 23-Jul-24 21:35:47

Actually I quite admire Starmer’s stance. Swift, decisive and no messing. The 7 MPs probably thought they’d get away with making a stance on this, owing to the Government’s huge majority - in that - it wouldn’t really matter. They came unstuck.

In Canada the rents are capped at 3% increase pa according to my bestist. She has a gorgeous apartment overlooking the sea south of Vancouver and pays a very modest rent, with laundry room thrown in together with a rather lively garden maintained as part of the rent.

Just catching up with this thread so a couple of days late but I think you'll find there is no federal policy on rents in Canada, it is a provincial or territorial issue. Rent increases and the notice required for said increase varies enormously. My family has lived in Quebec, Ontario and PEI with very different experiences in each area. They wait in trepidation for their current landlord to decide on this year's increase, or if he has decided to sell the house.

Oreo Tue 23-Jul-24 21:37:51

Am not so sure about the pushing on an open door, I just think Starmer is good at mollifying others. He and Reeves feel they can’t justify removing the cap and spending a lot more when so much else needs sorting. It’s their call.
