I’ve mentioned this on another thread, but delighted to see James Timpson appointed Minister for prisons, probation and parole.

In fact, delighted to see a range of Ministers selected for their knowledge, experience and expertise in their respective fields.

I have to say, as someone who has not been a Starmer fan, my opinion is changing as a result of his speech, Reeves’ speech, and Starmer’s decisions so far.

ronib although it’s my first instinct I am not going to blaspheme here, nor am I going to enter into another pointless discussion about your view of civil servants.

It’s not a waste of anybody’s time to point out why nothing had been happening on the Rwanda front for some time, because although it was discussed recently some have clearly forgotten. The OP asked whether the Rwanda plan had been one of the last lies told by the Conservative government. No, it was not and that needs to be corrected. There was a very real reason why action was suspended.

The Civil Service needs Reform.

ronib you are obsessed with this issue aren’t you? It can’t be more than a month since it was picked over in minute detail on a thread, where you queried every aspect of the Civil Service’s right to make a legal challenge against the government. There is no point going over the same ground yet again, when the fact is that you know the civil service was acting within the law but you don’t agree with it. It’s just a waste of everybody’s time - including your own.

This is probably stating the obvious, so apologies if so, but there will be a huge amount of work, both on policy development and amended implementation, going on behind the scenes, that most of us will never even be aware of. I remember reeling slightly at just how much change (and work) there was in the immediate aftermath of Labour’s 1997 victory (my first change of government in a directly affected work environment).

robib, the Court ruled on the FDA challenge yesterday. It’s entirely legitimate for a Civil Setvice union to ask for clarity on whether government policy breaches their members’ legal responsibilities, which is all this was doing, despite GBNews consistently trying to spin it into something else.

I can’t see that at this stage the summer recess will be delayed, as the election wasn’t expected so many people will have made holiday arrangements, that it would cause chaos and bad feeling if that happened. I expect ministers and home office staff are bound to keep working, but there is only time for emergency legislation changes to go through parliament in the next two weeks. The Lords has already broken up for the summer.

I am very confused. Why is it so hard to understand that instead of permanent secretaries supporting the minister of a given department, legal challenges to Conservative policy are still being considered by the High Courts? This means that the last government was not being supported by the First Division.

End of September it is pencilled in.

"Grades 6 and 7 civil servants tend to be experienced officials with significant policy responsibilities.
Senior Civil Service (SCS) is the most senior grade of the civil service made up of the senior management team. Generally, directors are ultimately responsible for the policy work of their team and director generals oversee directors and work closely with the department’s ministers. Each department also has a permanent secretary as part of the SCS who supports the minister at the head of the department, acts as the accounting officer and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the department."

I like this idea but fear we are in for a very long thread!
It has already veered off into critiques of the civil service (note the word service here- we are going to hear this word a lot) and football!

I just hope we don't descend into posts about what people are wearing and keep it focussed on what the new government is actually doing to make this country more stable and more successful.
