The first 100 days.

I like this idea but fear we are in for a very long thread!
It has already veered off into critiques of the civil service (note the word service here- we are going to hear this word a lot) and football!

I just hope we don't descend into posts about what people are wearing and keep it focussed on what the new government is actually doing to make this country more stable and more successful.

I don’t care about what’s achievable in 3 months really, as long as there’s no Party infighting and KS and the new Cabinet work well together.It’s going to take years to really make a difference but I feel hopeful for the future.

Can you name the cabinet and posts?

The first 100 days are usually the honeymoon period. Hopefully this is the case for this lot and they are spared all the whinging and negativity for a while. It will come though, always does.

This is the most inexperienced Cabinet in History.
A list was posted last night of their previous backgrounds, thank goodness for the guidance of the Civil service.
Steep learning curve let's all hope they can step up to the plate.

Recent Tory cabinets were more inexperienced.

But that is not necessarily a disadvantage. Fresh eyes and good work ethic count for a lot.

Mamie don’t assume anything. First Division Servants are grades SCS4 to SCS1. Permanent Secretary, directors.

Senior Civil Servants are grades 6 to 7.

The trade union supporting the First Division brought a court case against the government over its Rwandan plan and judgement is pending. No wonder Rishi Sunak looked so happy saying goodbye. A dystopian dysfunctional bureaucracy and he is well out of it.

Can you link to a source ronib because I have not seen it in any other context. The senior civil servants I know still talk about SCS grades.
I did find this on the FDA site.
"The FDA – known back then as the Association of First Division Civil Servants – formally came into being in January 1919. Right from the start, our rules stated that our purpose was to "promote the efficiency of the public service and to consider and deal with all matters affecting the classes of the civil service included in the Association". If that’s the case, I applaud KS! High time the St. G flag was redeemed from being sneered at, as a symbol of racist bigotry, or else as a symbol of the thick/uneducated - or both - as it all too often has been.

So the First Division of the Civil Service in the Home Office needs to explain itself over Rwanda.

Civil Servants work on the instructions of Ministers ronib. It seems reasonable to assume therefore that there have been no such instructions. I don't know what you mean by First Division? Do you mean Senior Civil Servants, those above Grade 6 or what? The FDA is a union for senior management in public service, but not afaik a descriprion of ranks in the CS.

That's good Mamie. The logistics of things always fascinates me. It has to be well organised, but quite exciting.

The Civil Service will also have had the length of the election campaign in purdah to prepare.

What a great idea for a new thread WWM. I shall watch for it with great interest as it saves me having to do it. Our new government needs to make an impact in its first 100 days, not only for PR reasons to look competent, but because there is so much to mend in our broken society. Sick people, hungry children, the prison service, and so much else can’t wait.

I wonder WHERE they all working at the moment until Tuesday because the other lot are clearing out of the offices over the weekend? A logistical nightmare. I have visions of filing cabinets being shifted from under them and favourite chairs being wheeled out!

I think that the Civil Service have that under control. There is a meet and greet from the Perm Sec and Private Office staff and offices will have have already been sorted. If Spads are in place they may have been involved too.

Government policy

The heads of the civil service departments have been preparing for a change of government for months, and Sue Grey - the PMs chief of staff has been in almost daily contact.

Reeves - will begin work to unlock private and public investment in the U.K. to get growth in the economy.
policy to reform planning laws will form part of this plan, together with the new green investment vehicle being set up.
Stability will be the watchword to keep borrowing and interest rates under control - this will give businesses the confidence it needs in order to begin to invest in the U.K.
Immediate action needs to be taken on the bankrupt councils - Angela Raynor is said to be staggered by the numbers of families with SEN children trying to get help from what are in effect bankrupt councils.

Streeting - wil begin pay talks immediately.

Cooper - is beginning immediate work on the small boats and the expected increase throughout the summer months caused by the better weather.

Work will begin on - Zero hours contracts will cease as will fire and hire contracts

They knew they were going to win the election so they had plenty of time to prepare themselves. This might make them seem super-efficient, but actually they were just itching to get started.
The Rwanda plan was another idea which was badly handled. Another Tory fiasco. It could have worked if they had been serious about it but it has been obvious right from the start that the Tories actually wanted all these migrants to flood into our country. They welcomed them with open arms.
Perhaps they had some master plan which will eventually be revealed.
