For those feeling nervous over the governments competence and who believe the propaganda put out by the right wing media, I thought I would start recording the day by day development of the governments activity.
Day 1
The PM appointed the cabinet, and was briefed by the permanent secretary.
The PM gave advice over urgent domestic issues needing immediate attention, as well as urgent security matters.
The Prime Minister signed off letters to the heads of the military, giving instructions over action in case of nuclear threat.
The Prime Minister will begin preparations for his NATO visit to Washington next week.
Sir Keir Starmer will have decided domestic issues over his living arrangements etc.
The Home Secretary -Yvette Cooper - killed the Rwanda plan. However it was disclosed by the Home Office that there was in fact no such plan in operation - no work had been carried out on any plan for months. So my goodness - was that one of the last lies told to the public by the previous government?
Am not so sure about the pushing on an open door, I just think Starmer is good at mollifying others.He and Reeves feel they can’t justify removing the cap and spending a lot more when so much else needs sorting.It’s their call.

In Canada the rents are capped at 3% increase pa according to my bestist. She has a gorgeous apartment overlooking the sea south of Vancouver and pays a very modest rent, with laundry room thrown in together with a rather lively garden maintained as part of the rent.
Just catching up with this thread so a couple of days late but I think you'll find there is no federal policy on rents in Canada, it is a provincial or territorial issue. Rent increases and the notice required for said increase varies enormously. My family has lived in Quebec, Ontario and PEI with very different experiences in each area. They wait in trepidation for their current landlord to decide on this year's increase, or if he has decided to sell the house.
Actually I quite admire Starmer’s stance. Swift, decisive and no messing. The 7 MPs probably thought they’d get away with making a stance on this, owing to the Government’s huge majority - in that - it wouldn’t really matter. They came unstuck.
Bit daft on their part as they were pushing on an open door.
Starmer has already indicated that he is considering scrapping the cap. Now they no influence being outside the whip.
Starmer is a strong leader and they were aware of the penalty so there is no excuse.

Rebecca Long-Bailey has lost the whip for 6 months for trying to alleviate child poverty … interesting. Remember her?
keepingquiet I expect facts and not fiction in Parliament - or rather I should say, statements need to be qualified. Yvette Cooper does have a tendency to pump up …. Grown ups do not become politicians . Stop believing the hype.

How was Cooper unprofessional compared to some of the Home secs (was it six in six years, or was that the chancellor- I couldn't keep up) or disrespectful.

In fact I really do wish that politicians could act in a much more professional and respectful manner.
Perhaps you could write to Yvette Cooper and ask her to explain it in simpler terms.

The Bibby Stolkhoms contract will not be renewed when it runs out in January 2025.
Those currently living on the Stockholm all have appropriate papers and can be dealt with much quicker, than those who have fled without the necessary papers.
They’ll have to be dealt with by January then, how many on board living there, is it the full 400 I wonder or just a handful.

The body will decide which courses should be able to benefit from funding currently reserved for creating apprenticeships, paid jobs that allow recruits to gain experience in the workplace alongside training or study.”
The only way they are going to do that is to stop wasting money sending students to university to get skills we don’t need. The current student loan scheme is massively in debt with a high proportion not being repaid.
The other issue is that 25% of working age people are not economically active - either can’t or don’t need to work, a minority are going to be working in the black economy too.
Child poverty
The prime minister has endorsed comments by Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, who said that removing the cap was among measures the government would look at as part of a review into child poverty.
With a few exceptions, the cap prevents parents from claiming universal credit or child tax credit for a third child. The policy affects 1.6 million children, according to the latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions.
Many of the charities and organisations consulted by the work and pensions secretary, Liz Kendall, on the taskforce last week have called for the cap to be abolished.
Part of the £10 billion figure Yvette Cooper allocated to the Rwandan scheme includes paying one thousand civil servants to set it up. Wow that is impressive. We need a full breakdown of all the available figures asap.
The re-couping/covid will be very difficult, not sure how they could trace so many individuals - they'll have to target the big frauds. Will it include payouts for contracts and similar?
