Gorgeous George has reportedly said he wants Biden to step down … IMO he would make a great candidate… especially after the couple gaffes Biden made at the summit yesterday- ooh so bad…called Zelensky Putin and his Vice President Trump … where is Kamala Harris?

Galaxy Fri 12-Jul-24 11:20:22

Handsome rich yes they are brilliant characteristics for a president. Dear God.

Clooney is a member of a powerful fund raising group and will have been "authorised" to make his statement about Biden. He is not just some "actor" and money is what US politics is all about. What he said was meant to be a strong message to Biden from his main funders and will carry huge weight. Whether or not it will be sufficient to get Biden to step down remains to be seen but he is in serious trouble.

I think Biden has to go, sadly. If he thinks that the errors he made were OK, then thats a reflection of his poor judgement.

Would prefer if Clooney had made those remarks in private circles, but he probably has already. It would be best if Biden consults and names a successor?

here are some alternatives mooted

[MayBee70] yes, think we were all surprised he Married at all...but he does have a smart wife and has donated millions to the Democrats...and agree with you ..Trump wouldn't stand a chance against George...he gets more handsome as he gets older ..and he still has that magnetic charm and appeal and is a good orator..blush

Yet another good actor attempting to influence politics.

... as do others with sufficient wealth - though they might not be celebrities.

But, is there any reason to exclude a celebrity from the political arena? Clooney has been 'politically active' and involved in politics for very many years. Just because he's an act-or doesn't mean he can't also be an activist.

MayBee70 Fri 12-Jul-24 10:18:48

I’ve long held the view that Clooney has a long term ambition to be in The White House. Which was reinforced when he married a lawyer and not an actress or model. I do actually wish he’d bring his plans forward a few years. Imo Trump wouldn’t stand a chance against him! As for actors and politics, look what a revelation Swarzeneger ( albeit being a Republican) has been.

I under no circumstances think the validity of opinions should be based on how much money people have raised

henetha Fri 12-Jul-24 09:57:57

I think it's perfectly okay for actors/celebrities to give their opinions about the President, providing they are keen political activists, like George Clooney is and raises millions for the Democrats.

foxie48 Fri 12-Jul-24 09:57:56

We do not know what is being said by Jill Biden behind closed doors, we also don't know what is happening to Biden's health (possibly Parkinsons?). I'm just about to listen to the latest episode of The Rest is Politics, US and will be interested to hear what Scaramucci and Kay think. Last time it was discussed S thought Biden would be gone by the end of July.

How do you know that his wife hasn't urged him to step down. In my experience men can be very stubborn and insist the are perfectly fine.
She can't force him to hand over to someone else.

Sparklefizz Fri 12-Jul-24 09:02:22

I can’t believe that his wife can’t see that and talk him out of standing, but she seems to be egging him on.

I suspect she enjoys the status and all that comes with it. She is not being kind.

MelAnt2 Fri 12-Jul-24 08:57:59

Totally agree he should step down - he’s being a stubborn old man, putting himself before his country as he will certainly lose to Trump, and that’s a frightening prospect for the US and the world. . I can’t believe that his wife can’t see that and talk him out of standing, but she seems to be egging him on.

I agree the US needs to find a way for Biden to step down.

There was a very good discussion of this on NewsNight last night, Bonny Greer explained how he could step down sensitively and pointed out LBJ did it on live tv. Sorry but I think it is unkind to call it a gaffe and that Biden is insulting or insensitive, dementia is a very cruel illness. I think the insensitive label belongs to his wife and his close advisors who seem hell bent on covering up reality, how do they think he could cope for four more years?

Sparklefizz Fri 12-Jul-24 08:54:12

Don't forget that there is precedence for an actor to become President (Ronald Reagan)

RosiesMaw2 Fri 12-Jul-24 08:53:46

Hear, hear.
This man has the red nuclear button within reach - it is terrifying to think of him pressing it by accident or in confusion.
What a choice the US has- max (Trump) or senile (Biden).
Michelle Obama has stated more than once that she is not interested- I wonder if anybody has put an ad up in the Washington Jobcentre?

nanna8 Fri 12-Jul-24 08:52:41

Michelle Obama would be very good but I think she has more sense. She knows exactly what is involved. These days heading the USA would be a poisoned chalice if ever there was one. Maybe that is why they are paving the way for the dreaded Trump ?

They need to find a way that preserves POTUS Biden’s dignity, but quickly.

It was a dreadful insult to call President Zelensky by the name of his greatest enemy.

His worst gaffe to date. So insensitive!

If America gets George Clooney, can we have Hugh Grant please?

Not insensitive if it was caused by some form of dementia.

People need to remember this.

True Baggs, I'll rephrase it better. Insensitive then of his advisors and of his WIFE to allow him to continue making gaffes on the word stage.

I bet Starmer is wishing he hadn't announced that Biden was mentally agile now. grin

I don’t think Starmer could have said anything about Biden, given that he’s the President and may continue to be for years to come.He had to be diplomatic. These gaffes should be the final nail in the coffin for Biden.
Forget Clooney tho, the witterings of celebs should be ignored.

Vintagewhine Fri 12-Jul-24 08:42:39

Starmer gave an appraisal of an hour's time spent with Biden and I thought he was tactful. I think Biden will step down. Clooney is a friend of Biden and a huge fund raiser for the Democrats so his view will matter, I think.
