French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 16:48:09

We’ve tried liaising with the French and paid them Lord knows how much money. Fat lot of good that’s done. The gendarmes just ignore people setting off in boats - we’ve seen enough photos to know this is par for the course.

I don’t know what you wrote Aveline as it had been written and deleted whilst I was writing my post.
That’s very quick. Someone was quick off the mark to report.

Nicenanny3 Fri 12-Jul-24 16:46:24

I hope Labour do stop them but I won't hold my breath.

All they have ever said is that they will ‘smash’ the smuggling gangs. The Conservatives ‘smashed’ some too, but it’s like a game of whack-a-mole - you take one down and another pops up in its place. We need a deterrent, and I see no sign of that now that the Rwanda scheme has been cancelled, despite other countries considering it a good idea and formulating their own versions. A government containing three human rights lawyers will never be tough on illegal immigration.

You seem to be rather obsessed with human rights lawyers.

maddyone Fri 12-Jul-24 16:45:53

I thought it had been established that it cannot be stopped in the Channel.

Aveline Fri 12-Jul-24 16:45:19

I see my last post was deleted. Obviously, I must apologise for writing the truth. 😑

DiamondLily Fri 12-Jul-24 16:44:08

Arrivals fluctuate, according to weather on the Channel. Thry always have.

The Rwanda scheme was a silly, over expensive, soundbite. We need to liaise (in a friendly way) with the French, and stop it in the Channel.

Hopefully, Labour can do that.

Nicenanny3 Fri 12-Jul-24 16:43:08

Yes free dental treatment, yet some of us who live here and have paid into the pot can't even get a dentist to look at our teeth 😡 we have to pay if we do find a dentist not free for us.

JaneJudge Fri 12-Jul-24 16:41:43

all of this is Yvette Coopers fault

My son is a member of the RNLI and both as a member and as a human being he will always come to the aid of those in peril at sea.
This is for those saying that the RNLI should not assist.

Just to be clear, I didn’t say that the RNLI shouldn’t go to assist migrants, I simply said they do go to assist migrants, because someone upthread appeared to not believe it.

You should be very proud of your son LauraNorderr because it is a very worthwhile charity.

Nicenanny3 Fri 12-Jul-24 16:39:27

Free phone when you get off the boat, that would be nice wouldn't for us OAPs as well a new phone. What else?

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 16:38:35

Oh yes, free travel, no wait for medical or dental treatment.

Nicenanny3 Fri 12-Jul-24 16:37:08

Well there's one pull factor free travel courtesy of a bus pass (free bus to town if you live on the the Bibby Stockholm a lady who lives near there told me she was very angry) and I had to wait until I reached pension age to get my free bus pass and I'd only paid in since I started work at 16 😡

Urmstongran Fri 12-Jul-24 15:39:57

🤣

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 15:39:23

And I’m a Dutchman.

Urmstongran Fri 12-Jul-24 15:12:07

I wish Labour well in this. It’s in all our interests surely? They’ve had many years to formulate a plan whilst in opposition.
I’m keen to hear of it.
I did think Rwanda would work (expensively) well as a deterrent. Word was getting round. Uncertainty of destination was giving those paying the people smugglers pause for thought.
Now?
Who knows? Yvette Cooper may have a very cunning plan….

France will be keen to see how the Labour government might change things.
The scrapping of the Rwanda scheme came as no surprise, because the French never thought it was either right or effective.
The scheme had shown no clear sign of having a deterrent effect. Numbers kept going up.
The French view remains that the UK should address the pull factors that keep drawing so many migrants, such as the ease of entering the jobs market undetected and the lack of identity cards.
Governments of all stripes in Paris know the Calais problem is perennial, and the most to be hoped for is more effective operational cooperation with London.

Urmstongran Fri 12-Jul-24 14:52:18

Ah. Thanks Wyllow3 for the fuller explanation and links.
😊👋

Wyllow3 Fri 12-Jul-24 14:46:02

It's also not a Scotland only initiative. Local Asylum seeker support organisation raises funds for bus passes - city in the North of England, so I think we can assume other similar initiatives elsewhere.

If you google
www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=england+cities+bus+passes+asylum+seekers&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

you'll see how prevalent the idea is.

Wyllow3 Fri 12-Jul-24 14:41:12

Oh, I found that (I always go to the Telegraph). But I assumed it referred to those who have already been granted asylum seeker status. new migrant arrivals have no status at all before processing.

Why?

You have to have the documents to apply and dont get documents before assessment

its also not new

"Do asylum seekers get free bus passes in Scotland?

It follows an announcement in the 2022-2023 Programme for Government that the Scottish Government would “work with third sector partners and local authorities to consider how best to provide free bus travel to asylum seekers and refugees including displaced people from Ukraine

source, Transport Scotland.

Its the Telegraph making waves again - without either the historical background or the facts about documentation required to apply

NotSpaghetti Fri 12-Jul-24 14:39:37

Those of us with migrants in our families do know how grateful they are - and how determined to work and do well.

I hope this works to Scotland's benefit and they get New Scots who feel truly welcome there and contribute to their new communities.

Urmstongran Fri 12-Jul-24 14:27:12

Here you go Wyllow3 from today’s Telegraph:

“ Generous Scottish tax-payers are to spend £2 million on a pilot scheme to give free bus travel to asylum seekers. The largesse is being provided by the Scottish Government and a range of publicly-funded civic society groups who want to demonstrate their support for new arrivals in Scotland, who must hereafter be referred to as New Scots.

The justification? In the words of the SNP’s equalities minister at Holyrood, Kaukab Stewart: “Scotland has a proud history of welcoming those fleeing war and persecution, and we are dedicated to helping them integrate into communities from the day they arrive. It is vital…people seeking asylum…understand their rights and access employment and services to help them to rebuild their lives in Scotland.”

Urmstongran

To be fair, there was no slight intended against Glasgow! I just meant to illustrate that (a) the SNP really are encouraging migrants and (b) the migrants likely want to be down south, especially London (where the streets are paved with gold they believe).

I cant find a source for (a) Urms.

found articles on necessary immigration (ie, jobs, legal) but not migrants.
