French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

Nicenanny3 Fri 12-Jul-24 14:13:05

Another 62 arrived on 1 boat yesterday. 546 since Labour were voted in.

To be fair, there was no slight intended against Glasgow! I just meant to illustrate that (a) the SNP really are encouraging migrants and (b) the migrants likely want to be down south, especially London (where the streets are paved with gold they believe).

Maybe the world wide agreements aren’t fit for the situation today.

I doubt our military or indeed the public would want to give up the right to prevent invading countries to enter our land, sea or air space. Its for the protection of all.

My son is a member of the RNLI and both as a member and as a human being he will always come to the aid of those in peril at sea.
This is for those saying that the RNLI should not assist.

Good for him!

That is funny Urms, I have never been to Glasgow. 😊

As usual the UK government is missing a trick. Send all the illegal imigrants to Glasgow. It might just be as much of a deterrent as Rwanda, its would be completely legal, a lot cheaper and the SNP actually want them! according to news today.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 13:25:59

The mass arrival of illegal immigrants in boats seems to me to be an invasion.

I thought the government was in charge of the armed forces. Obviously not.

Have you read the article? Our government is signed up to world wide agreements on action on the seas which are designed to protect the UK from invasion or other activities in UK controlled waters!

You cant complain that somehow we can have those protections whilst ignoring those of other countries.

Here is the plan some of you say doesn’t exist:

labour.org.uk/updates/stories/labours-immigration-and-border-policy-stop-small-boats/#:~:text=Here's%20Labour's%20plan%20for%20secure,to%20get%20real%2Dtime%20intelligence.&text=3)%20Reform%20resettlement%20routes%20to%20stop%20people%20being%20exploited%20by%20gangs.

We know about that. If you think it’s a workable plan, good luck.

I think I would like to give the Labour government a chance to prove themselves unlike those of you who wrote them off even before they came to government.

That speech was made in 2013 Jane.

I doubt if her philosophy has changed since then.

Wyllow3 Fri 12-Jul-24 13:15:16

(sorry for repeat on 2013 was researching).

GSM, it's far, far too early to see if it will work. There is so much groundwork to be done - like having enough asylum assessors, contacting safe countries re deportation, building stronger European wide anti smuggling organisations.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 13:12:34

It was intended to be a deterrent and it was beginning to prove just that, with illegal immigrants travelling to Ireland. Now there is no deterrent whatsoever.

westendgirl Fri 12-Jul-24 13:08:32

They've only been in a week.
Can you please explain how the Rwanda scheme would have worked ?

Wyllow3 Fri 12-Jul-24 13:08:31

Just realised - the article was from 2013!

I don’t think the criticisms will stop.

They haven’t with previous governments time in power so why would this one be different?
What’s new is that everyone can endlessly reiterate their support or non-support at the touch of a screen.

Those in favour will refuse to accept any criticism, justified or not.

Those who weren’t in favour will continue to offer criticism justified or not and get accused of griping for doing that.

It happened years ago too, but there were no instant platforms for everyone to jump on and broadcast their views.

Cossy

For goodness sake, does this constant griping about our new govt never ever stop!

Some of you were so quick to rush to the defence of the previous govt, who had 14 years to stop this issue and many others.

I think most of us know Rwanda would never have worked, the traffickers could not give two figs what happens to the people they traffic once they have their cash and piled them all into boats and in the back of lorries.

Who knows if the LP plans and policies for anything will work, but for heavens sake, they’ve barely been in power a week!

I think the idea was to stop people wanting to come here if all that would happen was they were sent to Rwanda. There the demand for traffickers would fall the old law of supply and demand.
