These figures are only boosted by the Ukraine and Afghanistan resettlement programme. Plus 44,659 others who were allowed to join family who were already here. There are no visas or safe routes for the majority who need asylum.

It's no secret that Migration Watch, which describes itself as an independent, non-political think tank, is anti-immigration. Iam64 I think that's easier to say if you don't live in an area where this has become a problem or where the native UK population has been overtaken by the sheer number of immigrants/migrants legal or not.

That’s so true Aveline, or if you live in an urban area which has been multicultural for as long as you can remember. I have posted before about the consequences of a disused RAF barracks in the next village to my son in very rural Essex being used as a centre for male asylum seekers. It’s literally just a stroll across the fields. Unsurprisingly, beautiful houses in a beautiful little village are not selling.

Would he prefer the high security prison which is being planned for the site?

People in "beautiful" houses don't have a right for the area a mile or so away (not just a stroll across a field) to be protected. Maybe you think it's OK to dump people in deprived areas!

Aveline, my town is a designated city of sanctuary. Rents are cheaper than in the south east so we get many people seeking asylum. The biggest group are from Syria, Afghanistan then African countries. So I’m familiar with changing demographics.

Totally agree Iam. The rhetoric on GN has taken a very nasty turn. I’ve stepped away now and stopped trying to put forward any sort of alternative, fact-based perspective.

I'm finding the act of reporting (on this thread), along with the spiteful comments towards posters depressing, soul destroying and out of order.
Especially if you're a new keyboard warrior or a trigger happy reporter of posts, you would do well to think before you type or hit the button.

I have met many racists, especially in my own age group. (age 75) Of course, apart from their very racist views and comments, they 'appear' to be kind generous people. However, I see the eye rolling and looks between them when I speak out against their racist views. Racists do not want to listen to reason!

Where are they all going to go once rubber stamped because that is what will happen. MOST have no IDs and will be out on the streets to free up the hotels etc. No one will be sent back. Really it's an amnesty all will be allowed to stay.

The most unreliable place to garner facts is on YouTube, it's full of cranks and conspiracy theorists.

I agree that we should have a faster and more robust way of granting or refusing asylum to those who come through legal channels.

But when I asked if
the illegal migrants are doing the right thing and should be allowed to continue pouring into the UK.
I was told that this is not an interrogation.
So evidently, querying whether we should allow the boats to continue is both an interrogation and xenophobic.

The problem will increase. We need a European method Pfi working together to find least worst options.

All I can say is, I am glad I am on my way out & not on my in, dread to think what this country is going to be like in 10/20 years time. Think of the legacy you are leaving for your grandchildren

I definitely knew which way it was heading 30 years ago and was spot on. Now every time I look at the news someone has been stabbed, body parts in suitcases etc.

What on earth has the Bristol incident got to do with migration?
