French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

🤣🤣🤣
I’m not going to play. is a familiar cry where I work.

Well, for a start Keir is rebuilding our fractured relationship with our European neighbours. Let’s not forget Truss and her comment about Macron. There’s no quick fix to all of this. Maybe people would feel happier if they had a meaningless three word sound bite to encompass it?

I think it would be a good idea for this to become a rant thread for the disaffected, to show us all how far you will go unchecked. I’m not going to play.

Maybe GN could have an area called "Echo Chamber".

*Labour will do nothing to solve this problem.*

Do you not think we should give them time to put their plan into action before judging them?

Yes I do.
I also think they’ve had a long time to decide on their plans and it’s worrying to hear nothing about what they are.
One of the reasons many voted Labour was the constant (not unjustified) criticism of Conservative methods, and their implication that they knew how to sort the problem.

I agree with Sago on the attitude of the French at the ports, and we see this first hand four or five times a year. They just can't be bothered, despite the money they were given by Rishi Sunak.
Large numbers of local French police have already been sent to Paris for the Olympics until October time. So, other areas of policing across the country will undoubtedly suffer.

I very much doubt that those asylum seekers who arrived on the 9th July were waiting for a Labour government. It's much more likely they were waiting for suitable weather. I don't know of anyone who wants uncontrolled migration or people risking their lives in small boats. I am hopeful that Labour will have some more coherent and legal ways of tackling the problem than the previous government which was totally hopeless.

The Kurds have given Starmer the title of “our friend, the man who will help us” so even they know what a soft touch he is and Yvette Cooper is the same.

Do you not think the Kurdish people need help, then?

Callistemon213 Fri 12-Jul-24 10:25:09

What I want stopped is the RNLI ferrying these people, they are going to France to collect them!

Where is your evidence for that, please Shantygirl?
Or is it a Farage meme?

Very sensible.

Only because the two of you know we are correct.

We once sat in a queue of traffic to get on a ferry at Calais, the queue was extremely long and slow moving, we watched as two young immigrants tried to break into a caravan, French Police were stood by chatting, someone alerted them, they sauntered over and shooed them away.

There is very little appetite for the French to sort this, it’s better it becomes our problem than theirs!

I would love to know the cost to the taxpayers of keeping these men in the UK, will they be entitled to pensions eventually, what about health care, what if they become parents, end up in prison etc?

Meanwhile we have ex servicemen sleeping on the streets.

The only solution I can see working is sending them somewhere they dont want to go to.

THAT is not a solution.

Wonder what pet name they will give Yvette? 🤔

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 10:10:20

All they have ever said is that they will ‘smash’ the smuggling gangs. The Conservatives ‘smashed’ some too, but it’s like a game of whack-a-mole - you take one down and another pops up in its place. We need a deterrent, and I see no sign of that now that the Rwanda scheme has been cancelled, despite other countries considering it a good idea and formulating their own versions. A government containing three human rights lawyers will never be tough on illegal immigration.

Actually, if you want to be persnickety, the boat capsized overnight so it would have been in todays’s figures, not yesterday’s. I agree it probably is the weather, but it is not true that there were more boats arriving in the UK in the first week of the Labour government. That is what I was pointing out, it’s a fact.

Inflammatory rubbish. Did you expect a tap to be magically turned off in the channel last Friday?
The facts - 13,195 had arrived this year to 26th June, which works out at 507 per week. This week there have been 484.

Absolutely NOT rubbish. Labour have spent the last few years ridiculing and complaining about how Conservatives have tried to deal with this but have stopped them at every single thing they have tried.

Yet they have not once told us what they planned to do if they won the election and they still don’t know.

Kevin Saunders, former Chief Immigration Officer has been on TV twice this week and said last night that Labour have no idea what to do and over the next few weeks numbers of illegal immigrants will increase dramatically.

The money that Rwanda received from us will pale into insignificance when you take into account all the money already spent and the massive amounts we will be spending as more and more arrive on boats.

All those that didn't vote Labour could see this disaster happening. Labour will do nothing to solve this problem.

So the Tory government did???

There would have been more if their boat hadn’t capsized yesterday. Just wait for a spell of calm weather and see what the numbers are then.

I still don't understand why so many believe what they're promised and pay huge amounts of money to cross. Although some are making the journey and left in debt.

More needs to be done for all these cash in hand businesses where some work.

Also these migrants know if they're caught, the chances of them being deported are small so they have nothing to lose.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 09:59:31

karmalady

what plan?

Exactly. There is no plan. They have since being elected (by some) talked about growth, investment, building more houses, planning reform, the NHS (sort of) but not a word about the issue which caused Reform to receive the third highest number of votes - uncontrolled immigration. And now we have three human rights lawyers in the government.
