French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

It's not up to me to sort out immigration, way above my pay grade, that's what we have politicians for and what a mess they have made of our country. Blair when he opened the floodgates, then Cameron who said he was going to get it down to 10s of thousands, then Johnson, Sunak although I think he at least did have a plan, now soft touch Starmer and the highly overrated Cooper.

But it doesn't appear to be above your paygrade to criticise rational decisions which have been made. The fact is that the country needs immigrants and no amount of passing the buck to politicians is going to change that. The solution, of course, would be to use the income derived from immigrants to expand and improve infrastructure.

The situation in Poland is pretty unique: they are under threat from Belarus and Russia:

apnews.com/article/european-union-alexander-lukashenko-lithuania-minsk-united-nations-28b4c0ca00074caa1fff8384f5539811

"The border crisis with Belarus has been simmering for months. Top EU officials say the longtime authoritarian leader of Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko, is luring thousands of migrants and refugees to Minsk with the promise of help to get to western Europe".

It's suspected that Russia, working with Belarus, is behind it, and that it has connections with State Belarus funding

"Monique Pariat, a senior commission home affairs official, said most are Iraqis or Syrians, flying to Minsk from Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Syria and the United Arab Emirates. They pay a lot of money to a state-owned tourist company, which goes “into Lukashenko’s pockets,” she said."

why anyone can "celebrate" these events, is beyond me.

If this thread upsets you so much I suggest you don't come on it. I honestly don't know what I've said that is repellent perhaps you can inform me. I'm just reporting the news and posting daily updates on the migrant crossings, I've not sworn or called any other posters nasty names so I'm perplexed, or are you repelled because my views are not the same as yours, well it might come as a big shock to you but out in the big world people do have different views.

Polish MPs have voted overwhelmingly to pass a new law allowing soldiers and border guards to fire live rounds at migrants trying to break into the country from Belarus.

The passing of the legislation comes in the wake of the tragic death of a Polish border guard last week, who was killed by a spear thrown by a migrant from inside Belarusian territory. Daily Express

They don't mess around over in Poland.

And?

So what if you SIL is in navy it's not going to happen what are you getting so steamed up about, leave biglouis alone.

This is a thread. Your views are repellent in my opinion, as are those of BigLouis who really doesn't need you to stand up for her.

We need a very tough policy like Australia and a navy with the courage to fire on them and turn them back.

that is a disgusting comment. My SiL is in the Navy.

Shame on you

"meet it is I set it down
That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain"

More relevant to this thread would be:
Meet it is I set it down that one may smile and the other frown.
We all have differences of opinion about the people arriving here in small boats and governments not getting to grips with this problem and as maddyone writes, nothing anyone can say will change minds.

What we need biglouis and what we've ended up with are poles apart unfortunately. People have had enough, politicians are voted in saying they will do this and that and it rarely happens. That's why people are turning to Nigel Farage here and Trump in America because no one else is listening to their concerns.

Meanwhile, 1,000 more migrants have arrived on our shores since Labour came to power.

Whether legal or illegal, I did not ask to have my country overwhelmed with people from all over the world. Immigration needs to be tackled in every way possible because no country can survive the level of change we are experiencing.

I agree they never put in their Manifesto did they that they were going to increase legal immigration. Anyway Yvette Cooper doesn't want you to know how many new arrivals have come to our country curtesy of the smuggling gangs I don't think they are reporting the numbers now. They must have seen this thread and stopped it 🤔

Mollygo Wed 17-Jul-24 10:30:09

I don't know about hardened. They may well be, but they’d say they’re under orders. (Where do I remember that excuse from?)

If they let them go, those people are deleted from France.
Getting them deleted means they don’t have to admit any wrong doing. Works in lots of situations.

Wyllow3 Wed 17-Jul-24 10:26:41

I tried to find information on what French police are doing and found this interesting article from the French POV.

www.politico.eu/article/calais-jungle-gone-migrants-far-right-english-channel-cross-united-kingdom-france/

They do puncture some small boats but give useful situation on the French coast

"“Our British friends … criticize us for doing a poor job of monitoring the 100-kilometer stretch of coastline affected by small boat departures,” said Mignonet. “If we wanted to monitor 100 kilometers of coastline 24 hours a day, we’d need a police officer every 100 meters, 24 hours a day. You can imagine what that would cost.”

Callistemon213 Wed 17-Jul-24 10:15:28

No, I know.

I just don't know how they can stand and watch, especially the children. They must be hardened.

MaizieD Wed 17-Jul-24 10:13:11

Yvette Cooper can't control the actions of the French police.
