French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

We try to burn them alive in this country

That’s a highly inflammatory statement.
It applies only to a very tiny minority of thuggish. brainless morons.
The collective ‘we’ does not apply to our country as a whole by any stretch of the imagination.

In 2024, a total of 14,759 people arrived in the UK, external on small boats.
Over the same period, the EU received 79,665 people by boats, external crossing the Mediterranean.
The majority of them arrived in just three countries:
Italy: 29,485
Spain: 26,863
Greece: 23,117
All three have populations smaller than the UK: Italy by 14% and Spain by 29%, while the population of Greece is more than six time smaller than the UK’s.
They received the most people in previous years as well, including last year when 263,000 arrived via the Mediterranean - the highest number since 2016.

I can only speak about Spain and migrants.
They love them, why? They harvest all that lovely fresh fruit and veg that all of Europe want.
But, there’s a catch.
These are the conditions you have to live in.
I know this to be true as we have driven down this road many many times as a quick cut through to a campsite.

Petra
I saw a documentary on that subject.Oh the living conditions for the migrants was so horrible on those huge fruit farms.
Spain should be ashamed.

Is it a competition?

If the problems are here, housing, hospitals, dentists, child poverty, foodbanks etc. why is it important to you to say how many other countries take?
They are, if you read/listen to the news from other countries, equally concerned for their own population, and I haven’t heard of them saying, “Do stay here. Don’t go to the UK.”

Chestnut Thu 18-Jul-24 16:30:27

And what is the point you are trying to make WWM2?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 18-Jul-24 16:11:49

And did they stay in those countries or travel through Europe, many in order to reach the UK?

Those who do not want to see uncontrolled immigration are not racists. Most people do not discriminate against a particular race or ethnic group. In fact most would probably be only to delighted (as I would) to meet people from other cultures when visiting their countries. What people on here are mainly concerned about is the huge numbers coming into this country illegally. That has to stop.

No!
TWMBO are determined that you’re racist if you even mention controlling immigration, or even worse, stopping illegal arrivals.

Actually, you’re right.

Skydancer Thu 18-Jul-24 15:14:30

Sorry - TOO delighted of course.

WWM2 that is a truly unpleasant remark you have made to Primrose.

Yes I know and I fully expect to be deleted, but free listening to conversation yesterday between. Immigrants my blood is still boiling

Why don’t you report yourself and get it removed then? I could call you plenty of names which would be equally offensive but I’m not going to stoop to your level.

Aveline Thu 18-Jul-24 14:03:54

Well someone reported a post of mine many pages ago. I can only speculate as to their personality and motivation.

BevSec Thu 18-Jul-24 14:00:27

I agree Lizziedrip, I have never reported anyone as I feel its preferable to let people express themselves too.

LizzieDrip Thu 18-Jul-24 13:32:35

I'm finding the act of reporting (on this thread), along with the spiteful comments towards posters depressing, soul destroying and out of order. Especially if you're a new keyboard warrior or a trigger happy reporter of posts, you would do well to think before you type or hit the button

Joseann I’m only responding to this as you quoted one of my posts.

If you believe I have reported any posts in this (or any other) thread, you are wrong. I don’t report posts; I prefer to let people say whatever they want - no matter how distasteful it is IMO.

I want the boats stopped ASAP because I do not want to see anyone else drowned.

I wish there was a way asylum seekers could apply via British Embassies overseas.

I was shocked to see what is basically a tent city on the grassy central reservation on Park Lane, one of the most famous and exclusive addresses in London. I think the London Mayor should get his act together and relocate the tent dwellers to more suitable accommodation.

I agree!

I also want to see boats and lorries stopped. It’s dangerous, traffickers are making a fortune and sadly atm you have to be in the country in which you wish to claim asylum in order to make a claim to asylum.

I live near where THE BARGE is moored . There are over 400 young men living there, ages 17 to 40 . Each shares a room with ensuite and tv . They have their own health care team , counsellors , benefits advice etc etc . I believe there must be asylum seekers amongst them fleeing from war and fear but many are economic migrants who came over by boat from France. THE BARGE is not a prison they are free to come and go and have a hourly bus which takes them into Weymouth and runs till late at night . Obviously they have meals and they get £9 a day each . I believe they should be allowed to work to help integrate and training whilst they are waiting . We also have a converted army base where asylum seekers with children live. My heart goes out to them for they have left their country in fear some I believe came from Iraq and Afghanistan . Our little town is one of many and there is much upset and grievance because the help and support THE BARGE immigrants get is far more than the local people .

This week some men on The Barge have gone on hunger strike saying they live in a prison and it's a dirty place and they want to go back into hotels ! ( The Barge has cleaners who go in daily) .

I can only hope this government does something to stop the boats .

What this shouts to me is, "fast processing"! Current government thinking does include return of purely economic migrants to safe countries of origin - this cant happen quickly because of backlogs and the need to reach agreements as to landing planes in those countries.

Wyllow3 Thu 18-Jul-24 13:22:05

Couldn't Agree more, GG13. People asked and asked during the last government to try and cull the smugglers at least to some extent. The new government, working hopefully cross Europe, is now classifying them as terrorists which means that the often unseen work of anti -terrorist agencies can be included.

Casdon Thu 18-Jul-24 13:21:24

Okay. I don’t agree with reporting posts unless they are very seriously inappropriate, and I think during the eight years I’ve been on Gransnet I have only reported twice and said so on the thread. It’s better that we see people’s views for what they are, however shocking - but that’s what causes disagreements on threads and accusations of a lack of tolerance. Sometimes it’s very difficult to square the circle.

Establishing safe and legal routes for refugees to settle in Britain will not deter those who are planning on crossing the Channel from doing so, and we know as much given that such routes already exist. Since 2015, the UK has resettled around half a million refugees into Britain using established safe and legal routes. These routes are intended to help those most at risk, and have therefore prioritised resettling those from areas of intense conflict such as Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Syria.

Yet despite the existence of these routes, irregular crossings across the Channel have consistently increased throughout this period, reaching almost 50,000 people in 2022 alone.”
(Migration Watch Website)

These figures are only boosted by the Ukraine and Afghanistan resettlement programme. Plus 44,659 others who were allowed to join family who were already here. There are no visas or safe routes for the majority who need asylum.

This is one of many articles about Migration Watch, who have their own agenda and produce highly inaccurate reports that help them spread false anti-immigration propaganda.

Ian Dunt, editor of Politics.co.uk, has launched a scathing attack on Migration Watch UK for falsifying the facts about UK immigration. It's no secret that Migration Watch, which describes itself as an independent, non-political think tank, is anti-immigration. Dunt describes how the group 'contorts the facts about immigrants and uses them as a weapon.

workpermit.com/news/migration-watch-uk-criticised-misleading-uk-immigration-reports-20160629

Thank you nano for exploding the sheer myth there are many safe routes tot he UK.

There are actually very few, unless you are Ukrainian or another named group If safe legal routes were available its to everyone benefit*

Migration Watch is very unreliable - it's funded by right wing figures and the report is very well worth reading. Its website shows its campaigning nature.

Aren’t we all intolerant of other peoples views if they are opposite to our own? Some people do hide it better than others, but I believe we all are, and we are kidding ourselves if we think it doesn’t show.

Yes, but we don't all want other posters wiped off GN.
