Why do some Scottish people dislike England so much

I have just seen this front page of The National.

I assume nobody from Scotland has ever been to Spain…

Australians are lovely ....

Just don't beat them at rugby, cricket, etc

Callistemon213 Tue 16-Jul-24 15:05:29

I was unaware that some Australians dislike the English so much. Those I’ve met on holiday have been friendly enough as are those who’ve stayed with us.

I don't think they dislike us
Some of them even love us (I hope!)

It's just that they are not good losers.
That's an understatement.

Thanks Callistemon213. @10.17am

I owe you an apology Nana8.

Or that the French (away from sports venues) don’t like the English either. We’ve stayed in France so many times, either in gîtes or with French friends with no unpleasant comments, just a little envy that we’d kept our own currency.
Perhaps I’ve been lucky in meeting the more pleasant among them.
The most unpleasant words against England that I’ve seen have been on GN.

The irony of a publication supporting a previous government that introduced a hate crime law and then oops suddenly realised oh dear! We've just committed to words what could easily be deemed as a hate crime.

The fact that the paper apologised would suggest that given some after thought they recognised their racist stereotyping. Of course they're a MINORITY but that element will use every opportunity they can, and they do, often without provocation to insult England or the English for the hell of it. Unfortunately it seems to be hard wired into their sad, unbalanced psyche to keep it all going. I think the front page of that publication "outed" their bigotry quite susinctly, no thinly veiled denials required.

At least two of my Scottish friends have close relatives who emigrated to Canada.

Grammaretto Tue 16-Jul-24 11:25:12

There are more Scots and Gaelic speakers in Canada than there are in Scotland.
I'd be delighted to host you here Callistemon
I am an incomer myself but I wouldn't live anywhere else, despite the weather.

I conclude we are not the people being talked about on the front of the national grin

Thankfully!

I even eat haggis on Burns Night 😃

Never been here Callistemon! you are more than welcome - I have a spare room and there's a Festival coming up.

My DSiL has never been to London. He's been to Devon and Cornwall, Yorkshire and Cambridge but never seen the need to go to the Capital.

Thank you Grammaretto

It seems something happened or got in the way every time I/we thought of going. I even had a Scottish boyfriend many years ago but he was at college in England 🙂.

We'd been to Burns Suppers here (organised by a Scots acquaintance), it seems to be Little Scotland beyond England!

JaneJudge Tue 16-Jul-24 10:58:35

that was to Calistemon smile

The "National" is not a newspaper in the usual sense. It was set up to support the SNP and campaign to break up the UK.

Although most SNP supporters are not racist and do not hate the English, it is very likely that anyone living in Scotland who hates the English, for whatever reason, will support separatism, and so the "National" whips up hatred.

I haven't been to Spain for 30 years

I've never been to Scotland.

The Scots I know (and that is quite a large number) have all moved here.

I think the problem with written language during a conversation is that there is no nuance. In normal if you saw someone's face you would gauge the conversation in civilised manner, online you just do not have that insight. It is why there is so much upset - most probably not even intended in most cases.

Anyway, I have started to agree with the younger members in my family. The media is setting us all up against one another whilst the rich get richer.

fancythat

I have learnt from GN that some people hate, really hate, people who are not the same political party as themselves.

So it no longer surprises me that people do really hate someone from a different country.

It's not the norm in real life except for extremists.

I am no longer sure of that.

We are not always aware what is really in peoples' hearts.

We only have to look as far as crime, where people say of someone "I thought they were normal".

GrannyGravy13 Tue 16-Jul-24 10:22:56

👍🏻

Callistemon213 Tue 16-Jul-24 10:20:41

To be fair, The National is an independence-supporting paper and if has an extremely low circulation.

As I mentioned previously, it is only the extremists who promote hatred, most of all this rivalry is banter.

Well until now I’ve supported Australia when it’s them against Europe, but now I know the Oz attitude thanks to Nanna8, I won’t bother.
(It isn’t the attitude of those in Oz that I know, unless they’re too polite to tell me)

To bs fair, it was me, not nanna8

Only from my own experience and I would support Wales, England, New Zealand, Australia
But not necessarily in that order wink

Oh for goodness sake ! Humour by pass. I’m not saying another word on this thread. Of course the Australians like the British, probably about 20% of them have British relatives. Of course we get on with each other and of course we love New Zealanders, too

Some of our Aussie contingent are over here now, banter not hate…

I totally get banter but I do not get hatred.

Why would you hate someone because of their political beliefs, the football team they support or the country they come from?

Perhaps I am just too much of a softie I always try to see the good in people, I have good friends of all political leanings, races and religions.
