Why do some Scottish people dislike England so much

Today, my Scottish football club is playing a friendly game against an English team. Right at this moment, fans from both teams are taking part in a walk to the ground to mark our club's 150th anniversary. It's all very friendly and very amicable. Tomorrow, I dare say both sets of fans will be cheering on two different teams. Football banter.

It happens in Sport, the Six Nations ! commentators have introduced Wales v England matches as ‘The Old Enemies’
losing to England reduces many to tears

Oh well GG I think we've had a fair insight into that from their number 1 spokesperson who never misses a beat to malign the entire English population.

🤣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I await their comments with interest!

That newspaper was just trying to cause division between Scotland and England and has succeeded judging by some posts on this thread.

The National is not a paper that I read but I understand the bit about never hearing the end of it. Football trivia was the first item on a TV national news channel the other day, knocking the terrible murders of three women into second place. The media need to get a grip on the importance given to this football competition as, in my opinion, this is what is causing any friction. . Good luck for the game tomorrow and may the best team win.

I'm not sure it's hatred that's whipped up. I think it's mostly rivalry, which is not quite the same.

I don't like that front page. I don't buy The National.

Have you read the text above the picture ?

Nothing to do with football just trashing English people in general…

Yes. There's been stuuf in the news about Spain not liking British (or is it only English?) tourists lately. This has just (stupidly) picked up on that.

I think such puerile nonsense is best ignored.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 13-Jul-24 13:19:55

I have only ever been to Edinburgh and found the people I engaged with to be friendly and kind.

I was just rather taken aback by this front page, particularly the text.

I agree with Grandmabatty
There's too much whipping up of hatred especially around sport.

But it doesn't stop at sport. We still have religious divides in Scotland, not to the same extent as NI but the rivalry turns from banter into brawls especially when alcohol is involved.

Baggs Sat 13-Jul-24 13:18:12

I agree, Siope.

Football rivalry is not generally expressed in friendly terms GG13.

My point though, is that whether the National’s language was appropriate or not, it’s wrong to extrapolate from that to a wider dislike of England and the English.

Grandmabatty Sat 13-Jul-24 13:13:36

And another disparaging post about a Scottish sports star. I think I'm going to bow out of this thread now as it's clear how some English posters regarding any Scot as fair game.

TerriBull Sat 13-Jul-24 13:06:31

I think I remember Andy Murray saying something along the lines some years ago re. an international between England and Paraguay "I really hope Paraguay wins" Didn't stop him marrying an English woman and living down here in England though confused

Grandmabatty Sat 13-Jul-24 13:04:08

I tried to be fair in my comment earlier, but there have already been nasty remarks about Scots and particular people. Is it any wonder that we get a bit annoyed at being stereotyped by other countries? I don't agree with that headline nor is The National a particularly popular newspaper in Scotland but I will defend my country.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 13-Jul-24 13:03:02

Siope I am all for friendly rivalry between teams and nations but that front page is a step too far.

MissInterpreted Sat 13-Jul-24 13:02:09

We don't. We genuinely don't. I'm sure many of us Scots are embarrassed to say the least by The National's front page today. However, please don't confuse football banter with how we feel about our neighbours south of the border. I can honestly say I don't know anyone who 'hates' the English. Football, on the other hand - well, you wouldn't expect a diehard Man Utd fan to be cheering on Man City, or an ardent Liverpool fan to be rooting for Everton, would you? That's what it is - football banter.

😀😀😀😀 Not been around lately, though. Too much Glenfiddich?

Siope Sat 13-Jul-24 12:57:07

I lived in Scotland for years, working in communities from Orkney to Dumfries & Galloway a they genuinely don’t.

Some Scottish football fans get fed up to the back teeth with the way that some English football fans, and a lot of the English based media, are so superior and patronising about the fact that England have a more successful football team, drawn from a much bigger pool of talent.

And there is, of course, no reason why a Scottish paper shouldn’t prefer one team from a different country to another team from a different country (which is what both Spain and England are in international football).

Interesting. Why do so many French people dislike them, too? If we go to France we make certain they know we are Australians. The attitude changes instantly for the better! Historical from the time of Mary Queen of Scots ? Same when my grandson went to a Greek school- they didn’t like Macedonians. Long , long histories? Most of us to pretend it doesn’t exist of course, it’s definitely not pc these days.

Grandmabatty Sat 13-Jul-24 12:54:15

I saw that on twitter. It was badly misjudged and there has been a storm of complaints about it with well known authors commenting on how distasteful it is. I'm not well known and I can assume it attracts a certain type of zealot/fanatic. In the same way as sometimes on gransnet English posters make rude comments about Scots. Frankly I deplore this type of divisive, sloppy media, whether it is about sport or politics.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 13-Jul-24 12:46:02

I have just seen this front page of The National.

I assume nobody from Scotland has ever been to Spain…
