Selection for the House of Lords

I believe that the new government are seeking to abolish hereditary peers - hooray! A good start but perhaps it’s time to look closely at how people are selected to sit in the Lords? Past prime ministers have elevated cronies, party donators (who transparently give money in return for a lifetime’s seat in the Lords), political supporters, relatives, the son of a Russian spy and a woman so young that frankly I wouldn’t trust her to do my laundry. My suggestion would be a cross panel of the public from all political backgrounds to examine each proposed candidate carefully to assess their eligibility, ability to contribute to political decision making and whether they had actually earned their place in the Lords. Enough of the raggle taggle group of chums being given a hefty meal ticket for life at our expense. What do others think?
