Exactly, that's my point, people in need are people in need wherever they are. tbh I don't believe in a hierachy of "need". however, I doubt there are people starving to death in the UK, whereas in other parts of the world there are people who depend on aid in order to stay alive. We may be unhappy with the NHS but some people in the world have absolutely no access to medical services apart from those provided by aid agencies etc etc. As I've already said, I am happy for 0.5% of my contributions to the state to be used for people living in abject poverty in other countries, you might not be but that's what most civilised societies agree to donate at the minimum.

Why is the second bit more important?
Surely it’s important to help the needy wherever they are. I don’t agree that needy people abroad are more important than needy people here in the UK.

So overseas countries are more worthy than all the UK women who missed out on years of pensions?

His idea seems to be that by giving all this money to these countries they can improve their countries so people will want to stay there and not come by boat!

My Tanzanian friend was here last night when it was on the news and couldn't stop laughing. She said it will never work because they all want to come to the UK whatever. She said Starmer is kidding himself.

She came here legally by the way about 20 years ago.

As if it's going to stop the boats, probably sounds good on paper though to a certain audience. In my opinion charity begins at home, let's fix broken Britain first we have plenty of problems and poverty here in some of our communities. Perhaps turn back the boats and stop importing more prolems might be a good start.

There was a lady murdered in the town my daughter lives by her partner. She was disabled and had come to rely on him as her carer as she didn’t qualify or didn’t register for any outside help. It just made me realise how vulnerable people in our own communities are. She had friends and a loving family but he’d isolated her and I imagine her disability made it easier for him. The details were gruesome. Yet gender politics seem to be focussing on distractions rather than the actual threats to biological women

Fact check says on average 3 women are murdered every week. Most are killed by men known to the women. The time of greatest risk is if the woman tries to end the relationship.

Actually it wasn’t just the partners, although the item concentrated more on that aspect, it was about violence against women by men.

Women’s Refuges should never be cut or closed. I was watching BBC news this lunchtime and there was an item on about how the number of women killed by their partners has risen hugely over the last few years. I think they said over the last five years. I should have paid more attention to the exact details. It was a frightening report, and my husband and I were pondering why this has happened recently.

It’s happening everywhere Ism, that’s why I am questioning where people this this money should go when people have voted for cuts to services for people, continually over the last decade. ‘Our own’ vulnerable people have been let down but the majority of people supported this and the rhetoric it is ‘taxpayers money’

JaneJudge, many charitable services have closed or reduced services because the finding they relied on from local authorities is no longer provided. LAs struggle to meet statutory duties so no longer give to Women’s Refuges for example.
A contact centre that offered safe spaces staffed by volunteers closed.

what sort of charity do we need at home? it is genuine question
who do you think needs more funding and support?
how will that be delivered?
why if more funding is needed, are there cuts to services for vulnerable people?

This sounds very personal for you Primrose.. I hope you are OK.. I agree about changing the pension retirement age, it was very unfair to loads of people..
I think the point Iam64 was making is a completely different issue... talking about Overseas Aid not UK government policy
