Well well.

I think you are wrong Urmstongran - I think he has gone downhill quite quickly.

If you listened to his great "State of the Union" address I don't think your suggestion that they have been covering up for him for ages is true.

He dealt with hecklers in a witty but firm way, he was all the things you want in a statesman and worked the room afterwards. Some of this after-chat was caught on mike and you can hear his comments and responses. He seemed pretty switched on then.
And it was long and he showed no signs of weakness then.

Also, it was an evening, which, if he was in bad shape then that would have caused more problems. It's well known that people with dementia have problems in the evening - and that's believed to be why Trump doesn't do so well at night. According to numerous psychologists they think Trump has progressive deterioration in memory, thinking, ability to use language, behavior, and both gross and fine motor skills.

Until recently psychologists said they believed Biden was showing signs of aging - but not dementia.

Democrats and Joe Biden’s lies have unravelled. He and his party claimed he was okay - sharp, nothing wrong with him - and now he quits. Democrats have brought this karma on themselves. Their lies are appalling,

Trump will win with a landslide.

The Democrats lies are appalling? After the disastrous debate performance they called on him to quit the race.

There is a feeling of relief and excitement now. The Dem party raised $27.5 million in donations from small donors in the five hours following Biden’s announcement. I think Trump has had the rug pulled out from under him.

Trump has made much of President Biden's age, very negatively.
Now it looks like Trump will be running against Kamala Harris.
He's 78 going on 79. Vice-President Harris is 59.
Trump's disrespect for elderly politician's has turned round to bite him.

Oops. I didn't mean to attach your quote Nanna8. Fumbling fingers.

But I do like your post!

Well now at least Trump will have a fight on his hands instead of being handed the job on a plate. Wouldn’t it be good if he resigned, too? Start anew with young, fresh ,energetic and intelligent leaders. If wishes were fishes and all that..

Unfortunately, the Democrat Party has not decided on a nominee yet (that I know of). Republicans have nominated their demigod.

True, but a man who appears strong and vigorous and successful and wealthy.
I wonder if the US really welcomes the thought of a female President?

Could you please source your information on Trump being succesful ? All of his businesses were a failure .
He has no more wealth he is scraping around for money. To pay his court costs, fines and lawyers . He has since sold two of his properties .

My words were appears
He may be none of those things ( tho his home and golf courses must be worth something) but to the watching millions this is how he looks, and after also appearing bloodied but full of fight after the shooting, even more so.

Grantanow Sun 21-Jul-24 23:37:54

Inevitable in my view.

Well, well, well, got back from dinner at our son’s house to find this news.
Joe Biden has done the right thing. To be honest, I don’t understand why an old man who clearly has some difficulties, wanted to run another term.

Yes, I think Jill Biden, had a hand in his resignation. She was quite obviously, very worried about him. Hope they have a long and happy retirement …

I thought she wanted him to stay.

I loved Barack Obama's letter about this: barackobama.medium.com/my-statement-on-president-bidens-announcement-1eb78b3ba3fc

Great letter, shows Biden's achievements.

Here's an interesting discussion on the situation.
Quite short but answering lots of questions.

It is my guess that Jill Biden finally convinced her husband of this move since the decision was made late Saturday night and no one else (besides Kamala) has spoken to Joe for days since he is quarantining in his home.

Wyllow3 Sun 21-Jul-24 22:05:10

A friend in the US wrote this, not saying I agree but she is a very "on the ball" Democrat:

"Actually her (Harris)most recent ratings have been better than either Biden’s or Trump’s, and as other recent polls have suggested that pretty much any Democrat, other than Biden, has a very good chance of beating Trump, I wouldn’t write her off.

It’s not a slam dunk that it will be her, though, in theory the delegates at the convention could choose anyone,

and one of the suggestions is to hold an open contest during it, allowing anyone who wants to throw their hat into the ring to make their case, and for the delegates to vote accordingly.

OTOH everyone might well get behind Harris who, it has to be said, is mainly unpopular in certain quarters, whose voices tend to be heard the loudest (eg Fox News) because she’s not male, or white.

A lot would ride on her choice of running mate, and there are a lot of good candidates.

One interesting one, which I hadn’t thought of until I read an article the other day, is Mark Kelly, senator from Arizona. He’s popular, has national name recognition, his wife is a survivor of a mass shooting/assassination attempt, and he has patriotic credentials up the wazoo (navy fighter pilot and astronaut) which would appeal to independents and moderate, never-Trump Republicans.

It wouldn’t risk a Democratic seat in the senate either, as the governor of Arizona (a Democrat) would get to appoint someone to serve out the rest of his term.

Siope Sun 21-Jul-24 22:01:54

Dickens, his base isn’t that big. It’s the ‘swing’ voters, the young, those currently feeling disinclined to vote Democrat because of Gaza, and so on that Democrats need to win (win back, in some cases).

My concern is that there aren’t any Democrats with enough ‘brand recognition’ to mobilise the vote in such a short time. I shall be working as hard as I know how to get every Democrat in the UK to vote.

HousePlantQueen Sun 21-Jul-24 21:58:53

Members of Trump's cult will indisputably vote for him, but hopefully now, all those Democrats who honestly thought that Biden was no longer fit for the rigours of office will now vote rather than abstain. I hope that Harris goes on the attack, Trump is a bully and his crimes and repellent behaviour needs to be brought out, up front, in debates. No less, no more than he would do.

Galaxy Sun 21-Jul-24 21:52:01

I just think if you keep doing this to people (not you personallygrin) there will be a reaction, Trump has an appeal to people as did Johnson, he saw what was happening and used it. And then everyone looks confused when it happens again and again and again.

^True, but a man who appears strong and vigorous and successful and wealthy^

This is a man who can’t hold a glass of water, can’t walk down a ramp properly, recently couldnt recall (twice) that Obama was no longer president, confused the leaders of Turkey and Hungary, warned that the world was headed for a second — not third — world war, and called Hannibal Lecter (who he seemed to think was real) a "wonderful man."

Up until now, it’s been strategically difficult to focus on Trump’s age. Now it isn’t, and as Rick Wilson has just said:

Let me tell you about the number of ads on Trump's age and mental health are sitting in the silos at the Lincoln Project

Frankly, bring it on.

The size of Trump's lexicon is limited.

He is inarticulate and speaks in short, snappy soundbites.

Pitted against someone eloquently fluid - on any topic - he would be exposed for the linguistic blunderer that he is.

But his messianic cult-following would still vote for him because they appear to believe that he's God's chosen-one. Which, I think, he also believes himself.

What I don’t get though Galaxy is that he himself also insults the same people who support him. It’s a strange dynamic.

It is sad for him but the best thing possible. It gives democrats time to choose someone with a future. I wish Joe well

And all to play for now.

I'm sure plans for "best outcome" are afoot within the party whatever the rumours appearing every 15 minutes!
