There has never been a male spouse of a US PRESIDENT and if Kamala is nominated as candidate and elected , her husband would be known as FIRST GENTLEMAN … I wish her every success in the election as she will have to face off with bully boy Trump

Let’s try and keep this thread free of nonsense one liner diss posts shall we, we aren’t in the fifth form.

Oh sorry, I hadn’t realised you run the show.
🤣🤣

I recently read a book called Coconut byFlorence Olajide.
Coconut is a term used to describe brown people (as in coconut shell) who reject their heritage for a white one.

I think those who would have liked a competitive process wanted to see how Harris managed being challenged and pushed to define her policies and political positions. That’s not unreasonable, particularly given her weaknesses when she ran for the nomination last time.

I agree Iam64 - I hope she energises the party and draws in others.

I hope her prosecution of drug crimes doesn't put people off...
I know some communities are vary wary.

I wish it wasn't a "Coronation" though.

It's not really a coronation though. They can't think of anything that betters it. Why they just don't use Elected I've no idea.

I knew little about Kamala Harris before Biden endorsed her. I remember her being seen as a great VP when Biden selected her. She seems to have been on the receiving end of shallow criticism from Republicans, eg cackling/coconut nonsense. Sadly all too common where women are concerned,

The more we learn, the more I like her

Many many women will prefer this offer to Trump!

The zoom call on Sunday had 45,000 women online and still some couldn't get "in".

Thanks Macadia - what a warm little clip that is!
I'd heard it on the radio but nice to see the video.
👍 and 🤞

$81 million has come in already into her campaign fund.

She has been talking about being a prosecutor and how she "knows Trump’s type"

"Vice President Kamala Harris drew on her past as a prosecutor on Monday in her first campaign appearance since President Biden dropped his re-election bid, saying her law enforcement background would help her defeat a rival who is a convicted criminal,” the New York Times reports.

^Said Harris: “I took on perpetrators of all kinds. Predators who abused women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers. Cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say: I know Donald Trump’s type.”^

I think there's a theory around children that any attention is better than no attention. Hence they are naughty and provocative. Its a dopamine hit.

winterwhite Tue 23-Jul-24 07:23:40

Urms, this is becoming distressing. Do think what you are saying and who you are backing.
You must know as well as anyone else that the trial wasn't rigged, that the 2020 election wasn't 'stolen'. And that Donald Trump is a fundamentally dishonest man. That's surely enough.
We who count ourselves your friends on GN are alarmed to see you seemingly in thrall to this man. Or if it's just a provocative tease, do stop.

Thank you Oreo.
Last time I looked, my neck wasn’t red. 😁

And Convicted felon? - yes but in a rigged trial that was brought on by the woke Democrats (at whose cost?). Trump's crimes are trivial compared to the arrogant abuse of American democracy committed by the Bidens and their corrupt cronies. This is the real con job if you care to look deeper.

If you believe Harris is polling level with Trump … I have a bridge to sell. 😁

Once again more factual incorrectness from the usual suspect.

None of the trials were rigged, USA is not a 3rd world backwater ( yet ) Traitor Trump was judged by a jury of 12 many who were picked and approved of by his own lawyers.

Trumps crimes are many and none are trivial when you live in a democracy. Is it a surprise that he has acted so criminally?
No, that was his business model as taught by his father, he was
Influenced by a certain criminal elements that are famous in his corner of NY that grew up in. I lived in NYC when he was up and coming and have followed his trajectory since.
So, I have definitely looked deeper than most as I love to read .

Biden’s crimes? He is not in court. Nor has he been .

The biggest crime here is the way you can come on here and spout random “facts” without anything to back them up.

That’s Fake News.

Well, whatever. Now there will be a contest instead of a walk over, thank goodness. I would think the results will be pretty close, both sides need to engage the ‘disinterested’.

Our posts crossed, Syracute. The remarks are from her speech on May 10 2023 - link in my post above.

She was just on TV laughing and squealing something like “do you think I’ve just fallen out of a coconut tree?”

This was a saying from her grandmother that she quoted once.
Now people are honoring her by referencing coconuts.

Merion Mon 22-Jul-24 23:55:04

Yes, some big Silicon Valley names supporting Trump because as Pete Buttigieg said, it's very simple, These are very rich man who have decided to back the Republican party which does very good things for very rich men.

This is a Guardian piece on the coconut meme:

The origins of this meme lie in a speech Harris gave in May last year, swearing in commissioners for the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics.

Harris was trying to make a point about the need to focus on young people and their wider community at the same time, because “nothing exists in a silo”.

She then quoted her own mother, who she says used to say “I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people, you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?”

Text of the speech here:

I am struggling to find evidence that Trump has said he refuses to debate Harris - assuming she wins the Democratic Party nomination. An hour ago, writer Stephen King simply tweeted: Trump has announced he won't debate Kamala Harris - with no source.

Yesterday, Politco tweeted: Republicans are not happy about today's news [of Biden’s step down]. One GOP source tells [Politico’s Jonathan Lemire] he doubts Donald Trump will even debate VP Kamala Harris, saying he'll likely call her an illegitimate candidate. which I suspect is why Obama has not given his endorsement - preferring that this goes to an open convention - which Rory Stewart was explaining on yesterday’s TRIP podcast.

Did anyone watch Newsnight? Writer Bonnie Greer and pollster Frank Luntz’s contributions in particular about younger female voters and union members. Worth a watch.

Wyllow3 Mon 22-Jul-24 23:44:13

Its small compared with the sort of donations the Elon Musks of this world hand out, but big in terms of a wave of support.

MaizieD Mon 22-Jul-24 23:33:19

According to X sources, Harris has raised $100 million in small donations in the course of 24 hours. If true, that represents an awful lot of voters...

Macadia Mon 22-Jul-24 23:25:48

If interested, a bit of background info: Kamala (pronounced pronounced “COM-mah-lah") and her sister were raised by their mother, Shyamala Gopalana. Shyamala moved from India to California to pursue graduate studies and was a cancer research scientist. She moved, with her daughters, to Quebec, Canada, when Kamala was twelve years old. Her father lived in California. Kamala graduated from Westmount High School in Quebec and attended Vanier College in Montreal. Later, she attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she led the Debate Team, chaired the Economics Society and graduated with a degree in political science and economics.

MaizieD Mon 22-Jul-24 23:09:52

I'm finding US media sources a bit more cagey than Stephen King. Not 'definitely won't', but, 'likely not to'.

Siope

Trump has actually said the September debate should be moved from ABC to Fox, in his usual elegant style.

Coward.

Hmmm

That was yesterday.

I'm trying to find confirmation of the Stephen King statement I posted earlier.

So was I Maisie, tried usual MSM 🙂 so not sure yet.

Siope Mon 22-Jul-24 22:57:13

Ah, sorry, I missed the date. I swear, Twitter/X is next to useless now it doesn’t put searches in date order.

Its good to have book references and informative one liners, but earlier today another thread disintegrated in posters slanging and accusing each other.

It's good to have a space for informed discussion.
