There has never been a male spouse of a US PRESIDENT and if Kamala is nominated as candidate and elected , her husband would be known as FIRST GENTLEMAN … I wish her every success in the election as she will have to face off with bully boy Trump

Just listened to an interview with Joan Baez on BBC 4 Front Row. The differences between politics in her youth and now touched upon. She knows Taylor Swift, and said that she has definite views but her parents and friends have advised her it was dangerous to speak up on the current contest

It's very very sad, and very very nasty. Doesn't take long to google CNN or Fox to realise just how much.

Glad to look at his support for gun control

"Walz has pushed gun control reforms as governor, signing a suite of measures into law in 2023 including universal background checks and “red flag” rules that make it easier to take guns away from people who are at higher risk of injuring themselves or others."

(this info widely available)

Each so called "fact" needs careful checking.

For example:

FAQ
Is it true that doctors can provide abortion up until the moment of birth in Minnesota?

“No. Absolutely not. No one is performing abortions up until the moment of birth. There is no such medical procedure, and any suggestion otherwise is bad-faith propaganda aimed at hijacking and toxifying the public discussion.”

Be very wary about any claims made and sources.

Yes varian they are centrist but Trump and co label them socialist - a real term of abuse 😂

varian Tue 06-Aug-24 18:58:45

The American right throw about words like "radical", "liberal", "socialist" , "communist" and "marxist" without appearing to actually understand any distinction between them.

They are used as catch-all terms of abuse.

In fact the US Democrats are, by our standards, pretty centrist.

Iam64 Tue 06-Aug-24 16:36:20

A radical socialist 😂. Have you been whatsap ping Mr Trump again urmston?
America seems to view anyone with a liberal approach to life as. Radical socialist.
You may of course be correct. I’m off to ask Google about him

Urmstongran Tue 06-Aug-24 14:55:17

On the other hand … He is a radical socialist, who was a supporter of the corrupt BLM group, has overseen a large increase in crime in his state, squandered a $17.6 billion budget surplus then raised taxes, was an ardent advocate of mask mandates, school closures, supports transgender surgery for minors, supports full term (9 months) elective abortion, has overseen the worst K-12 results in Minnesotan schools in over 30 years - Not a moderate at all.

Hey - a team of two diversity hires. She was chosen when Biden was specifically looking for a black woman. He was chosen when they had stated the VP would have to be a white man.

Mr Walz, 60, a straight-talking former teacher and National Guard officer, emerged as the favourite contender of the Democrat’s Left flank, while capturing Minnesota will be key for Ms Harris.

Mr Walz was elected to a Republican-leaning district in 2006 and served 12 years. He was later elected governor of Minnesota, where he pushed a progressive agenda that included free school meals, tackling climate change and supporting LGBT rights.

Source: The Telegraph today.

He was selected as the running mate over Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania, who some Democrats worried was too pro-Israel.

BBC is better! The mid western bit had to be very important.

MaizieD Tue 06-Aug-24 14:25:39

Some information about him here on the BBC website

Time to go for a look.......

news.sky.com/story/why-popular-progressive-tim-walz-could-be-kamala-harriss-running-mate-after-his-effective-attacks-on-weird-trump-13191819

Interesting pick.... ticks the box as midwestern "It is this down-to-earth homespun style that has helped him connect with ordinary Americans."

"Mr Walz may not have the same profile as other vice presidential hopefuls, but he is well-placed with a proven appeal to rural, white voters. He has championed progressive policies, including free school meals and expanded paid worker leave."

some quite radical policies he's likely to be attacked on.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 06-Aug-24 14:14:37

Yes saw that.

Don’t know much about him. I think he has been a teacher at some time in his life.

dotpocka Tue 06-Aug-24 14:11:15

I like Pete Buttigieg best too, on balance. Clearly bright and articulate and able to take on the media. Kelly, well what on offer except "Arizona?"

Beshear may attract the swing/conservative/religious voters better than Buttigieg tho? As long as he is as articulate as Buttigieg.

Kelly introduced/supports gun control legislation.

"Out-there" not "put-there!

NotSpaghetti Fri 02-Aug-24 21:56:21

I like Pete Buttigieg - but think he may be a bit "put there" and Mark Kelly is "safer".

Wyllow3 Fri 02-Aug-24 21:53:02

Kamala has now been formally adopted as Democrat candidate.

I like this article as it has pix and details of the 6 possible vice presidents.

Syracute I read that about the $$$ too!
In cash!

NotSpaghetti Fri 02-Aug-24 16:51:43

Thank you Casdon I read it (I found no pay wall btw) - and also some of the suggested links.

Syracute Fri 02-Aug-24 16:51:35

Someone who votes for Trump IS ignorant .
They ignore facts.
I don’t care what church they go to or what bible they read but there is no excuse for Trumps behaviour on January 6 .
New expose on Trump that in 2016 his campaign took illegally 10 million dollars from the Egyptian government .
Let’s see how he dodges that one .

Casdon Fri 02-Aug-24 16:50:52

It’s a weird thing with the Financial Times Syracute, we’ve had it before. I read the article with no paywall, then went back in and there was one. Tried twice more and the second time there was no paywall again. I can’t explain why.

Interesting perspective from the Financial Times.
