A disporportionate reaction it seems. It makes me wonder what happens when there are no filming taking place.

Sorry, that was to Urmstongran

Callistemon213 Thu 25-Jul-24 14:38:29

I was calling DH because he'd gone back only about 10 feet to explain to the rest of our group why there was a delay. DH (of course) carried on "Just a minute, dear", and the immigration officer went for his gun and yelled at me to get him!

pascal30 Thu 25-Jul-24 14:37:47

I've just listened to Andy Burnham and he was quite restrained as there is obviously a back story here involving a flight.. I don't think the media are helping by interviewing reform people..

Urmstongran Thu 25-Jul-24 14:34:06

Entering the USA, the immigration officer went to draw his gun on my innocent DH for a misunderstanding

😱 I’d have fainted Calli!

I agree karmalady. Theres a lot more to this than meets the eye, and, yes, whilst the police officer didn’t use complete restraint, once the perpetrator was down, and probably should have done, the situation was serious and it’s easy for those of us watching the footage from the comfort of our own homes to pass judgement - but we weren’t there, and we don’t know the full story. We don’t know the true circumstances the police officer and his colleagues were under, but I’d hazard a guess that the person they felled was not a nice, polite, young man, ready and willing to do as he was told.
As my DH said, he’s lucky it wasn’t in America - he’d probably be pushing up the daisies now, if it had been.

I’ve been through airports many times overthe years and never had any cause whatsoever to interact with armed police officers. What were this pair doing? Not innocent bystanders by any stretch of the imagination.

I've seen a man going through an airport threatening to kill everyone, he slipped through security to Departures whilst I was having my hand luggage searched.
Armed police followed him, ready to floor him if necessary but I don't know what happened in the end.

I can’t say if the reaction was disproportionate, kicking somebody in the head and stomping on them is wrong. Strange that nobody bothered to film the police being attacked and the police woman having her nose broken. Or are we just not allowed to see those pictures?

I think we tend to react immediately to these media snapshots without reading the full story and putting things in context .

So we do, and we haven't the full story, which I why I think the comments upthread

"Burnham is right. We need to follow due process and stop trial by media"

are to the point.

Callistemon213 Thu 25-Jul-24 14:06:33

However, the police are or should be trained in restraint and it doesn't involve stamping on suspects, if that is what happened.

our very brave armed policemen were making sure their guns could not be grabbed, potentially leading to an airport massacre. They deserve to be supported. 3 are in hospital. one policewoman got a broken nose after being punched in the face by a big man. They defended us well and it involved adrenaline. The video has been edited and there is a much bigger story. They are our defenders and they did defend

What would have happened if these men had got hold of the guns?
It doesn't bear thinking about.

The police would then have been labelled as ineffective.

Absolutely this.
Media are being completely irresponsible showing just a very small part of the 'story' but hey, what's new.

“Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Andy Burnham has said the footage was 'very disturbing' but that he had since viewed fuller video of the incident and that the circumstances were 'not clear-cut', with 'issues for both sides in the situation'.”

Burnham is right. We need to follow due process and stop trial by media.

Agreed.

Himself has just said “if anything goes off around me like that I want a robust response like the Guardia Civil in Spain”.

I suppose that’s a Police Force. We, in the UK have a Police Service. Altogether different.

Urmstongran Thu 25-Jul-24 13:19:56

40,000 police officers were assaulted last year, some seriously. GMP are meeting Andy Burnham today (Manchester’s Mayor).

EkwaNimitee Thu 25-Jul-24 13:16:27

The officer should have been able to control himself even under the severe provocation he was under but I have no sympathy whatsoever with the yob concerned or the mob protesting. No doubt the yob will get an apology and compensation and the officer a black mark on his career.

Urmstongran Thu 25-Jul-24 13:14:38

I’m not sure exactly what happened even after viewing the video footage. I do know a WPC had her nose broken in the fracas. How things escalatedfrom there have no idea.

Bridie22 Thu 25-Jul-24 13:08:33

I don't condone the police officer using the force he did, however is it ok for our police to be seriously assaulted and not react,?
