The former BBC Newscaster and anchor man for so many State occasions is appearing in court today with having indecent images of children.

Over 30 images in all, with three being of the most serious level…

I met him several times over many years, never thought him
weird,

I wasn’t surprised in the first instant.
What I’m bloody lived about, is, the fact that up until the 23rd of July he was still on the payroll 😡
I expect with that obscene pay packet he can afford the calibre of barrister who will make sure he goes to a very nice private psychiatric unit.

And that he’d been given a £40k pay rise!! 🤬

I just always liked him. He seemed such a pleasant and empathetic newsreader. He was so good during the Queen's last day.
Hearing this dreadful information about his nasty proclivities just goes to show that who we see on TV are just performers. Their presentation is just that. Not an insight into their true personality. His poor family.

Kate1949 Wed 31-Jul-24 10:39:16

Of course if someone appears 'weird' to a few people it doesn't mean they are. There was just something about him to me. Obviously no one knew it would be this.

henetha Wed 31-Jul-24 10:36:40

Crikey, I can't even spell his name correctly. Numbskull!
Huw.

Galaxy Wed 31-Jul-24 10:36:08

Oh no you shouldnt feel dirty. It's how predators work. Unfortunately his family probably feel the same but magnified by a million 🙁

That's very honest of you grannygravy.
I am not trying to blame anyone, I cant even remember who was on the thread, except if I remember rightly a poster who appeared from nowhere and defended him to the hilt. That always makes me suspicious. I just remember how hard it was to try and talk about it.

I always admit when I get things wrong.

Just feel a bit dirty for thinking he was one of the good guys 🤬

as we are all anonymous (to a degree) it could be someone who knows him, his agent or whoever

abused people, especially minors - do not always understand they are being abused

JaneJudge Wed 31-Jul-24 10:31:54

surely all abusers are mentally unwell? doesn't it go with the territory?

Maybe the boy who raised the alarm might get apologies from all the people who savagely undermined him for having a less than perfect background? No? Thought not.

I was surprised when it came out - HE never seemed dodgy to me - but that's the point, really. There is no template for sex offenders, which is why complaints should be taken seriously when they are voiced.

It wasn’t the boy(?) who made the complaint it was his parent/s

As I recall the boy(?) vehemently denied anything untoward had occurred.

Babs03 Wed 31-Jul-24 10:29:19

Surely there needs to be an independent body investigating any complaints made about these big names. I imagine making a complaint to the beeb often ends up being a fruitless exercise as history teaches us.
Not sure if anyone did complain prior to Edwards being outed but it does make you wonder.

And he got that substantial pay rise, from what is essentially the public's money, as if the six figure sum he was already getting wasn't enough, whilst suspended from the BBC.

The most serious level of the images, images of children, real victims. Incomprehensible especially when he has children of his own.

This ( tho my use of the word may annoy)
I guess we have an often false idea about the characters we see on tv, national treasures and so on.😲

Shinamae Wed 31-Jul-24 10:26:56

He has just pleaded guilty to the charges, but he could hardly do anything else with the evidence that was found..

Yes, I was shocked to hear he was on the payroll still.

I suppose innocent until proven guilty.
But to give him a rise too ! Beggars belief.

Doodledog Wed 31-Jul-24 10:23:52

He's pleaded guilty.

I find this very sad. I admired Hugh as a news reader.
But there is no excuse, mental health or not, the children are the first consideration.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 31-Jul-24 10:23:16

I was one of the posters who gave him the benefit of doubt I just couldn’t see why a high profile successful male would do what he was alleged

I now realise that fame and money does not prevent one from illegalities.

Galaxy Wed 31-Jul-24 10:22:39

It's ok Callistemon, I am cross which in my case often manifests in inappropriate sarcasm.
I think it is a warning to be very wary of people who are accused of very serious crimes saying the allegations are damaging their mental health.

Why is it a shock? We don't know these people. He always appeared a bit weird to me.

Glad you said that, I always thought it was just me. I often turned him off, he gave me the creeps.

Actually, he never seemed weird to me although I only 'knew' him as the reassuring voice with a Welsh lilt and a face on television.

I was being sarcastic Callistemon, his mental health was used endlessly to try to stop people talking about it.

Oh sorry, I missed the subtlety Galaxy.
