For reference, and to avoid misinformation being given out.

“This week – we are a nation in shock.

A country coming to terms with an attack so inexplicably vile…

That fear is an understandable reaction.

Our first thoughts of course are with the families at the heart of this…

Their pain is unimaginable.

And so I call on everyone to give them and indeed the wider community at Southport…

The space to grieve.

And time for the authorities in Merseyside…

To do their job.

There will be a time for questions.

And we will make sure that the victims and families in Southport…

Are at the heart of that process…

That’s the very least that we owe these families.

But we also owe them justice.

So while there’s a prosecution that must not be prejudiced…

For them to receive the justice that they deserve…

The time for answering those questions is not now.

And I remind everyone that the price for a trial that is prejudiced…

Is ultimately paid by the victims and their families.

Who are deprived of the justice that they deserve.

Let me turn now to the actions of a tiny, mindless minority in our society.

Because in the aftermath of this attack

The community of Southport had to suffer twice.

A gang of thugs, got on trains and busses…

Went to a community that is not their own…

A community grieving the most horrific tragedy…

And then proceeded to throw bricks at police officers.

Police officers who just 24 hours earlier…

Had been having to deal with an attack on children in their community.

Their community.

And make no mistake…

Whether it’s in Southport, London – or Hartlepool…

These people are showing our country exactly who they are.

Mosques targeted because they are Mosques.

Flares thrown at the statue of Winston Churchill.

A Nazi salute at the Cenotaph.

And so I’ve just held a meeting with senior police and law enforcement leaders…

Where we’ve resolved to show who we are.

A country – that will not allow understandable fear…

To curdle into division and hate in our communities.

And that will not permit, under any circumstances…

A breakdown in law and order on our streets.

Because let’s be very clear about this.

It’s not protest.

It’s not legitimate.

It’s crime…

Violent disorder.

An assault on the rule of law and the execution of justice.

And so on behalf of the British people…

Who expect their values and their security to be upheld…

We will put a stop to it.

I want to thank all of the police officers, across the country…

Who have already, as they so often do…

Stood up to intimidation and violence in the past few days…

And indeed, throughout the summer.

And let me be clear – the meeting this afternoon was not about pointing the finger of blame…

That is not how this Government of Service conducts its business…

Because it doesn’t work.

Rather – this was a meeting to pull together our response…

A response both to the immediate challenge…

Which is clearly driven by far-right hatred.

But also - all violent disorder that flares up.

Whatever the apparent cause or motivation – we make no distinction…

Crime is crime.

And so - to that end…

I can announce today, that following this meeting…

we will establish a national capability, across police forces…

To tackle violent disorder.

These thugs are mobile…

They move from community to community…

And we must have a policing response that can do the same.

Shared intelligence…

Wider deployment of facial recognition technology…

And preventive action – criminal behaviour orders…

To restrict their movements…

Before they can even board a train…

In just the same way we do with football hooligans.

And let me also say to large social media companies and those who run them…

Violent disorder clearly whipped up online…

That is also a crime.

It’s happening on your premises.

And the law must be upheld everywhere.

That is the single most important duty of Government…

Service rests on security.

And we will take all necessary action…

To keep our streets safe”

I didn't vote Labour but we have a Labour government and need to move on and hope they will deal with
the problems we are facing.
Pointless nitpicking over percentages.

ronib Tue 06-Aug-24 13:50:42

I think you need to start asking why 40 percent of all eligible voters stayed at home.

Mollygo Tue 06-Aug-24 13:47:38

Yes it told us that they wanted a change of government, just as they did when Labour did last time.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 06-Aug-24 13:46:01

However you like to spin it Labour got the biggest majority since forever, and the Tories the smallest amount of seats since forever.

Must tell you something.

ronib Tue 06-Aug-24 13:42:40

^It is perfectly true that only 20 percent of voters voted in Labour btw^

ronib this is a lie.

Labour received 33.7% of the vote in the last GE. ^Full Fact^

LizzieDrip 60 percent voter turnout.
The silent 40 percent? 33.7 of the vote I think boils down to about 20 percent of all eligible voters.

The police say that they are - no question.

Well they would, wouldn’t they? They don’t listen to the people, only the politicians. So it will go on unless they do. The thugs must just love it because it gives them some sort of reason for their horrible actions. Just good luck because it will be needed unless they listen to the disaffected people of the UK. So easy to tar all with the same brush .

I think the various Conservative governments lost control of immigration long ago and it isn’t getting any better.
Government no longer knows exactly who’s in the UK. Add to that the hundreds of people landing here daily and you have a recipe for trouble. It’s a knotty problem to solve but the new Labour government just have to get to grips with it.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 06-Aug-24 13:09:26

The trouble is they have put everyone in the same boat. Either laziness or they just don’t want to listen. Not all those marching are thugs but that is just too hard for them to accept. So it will go on.

Anyone marching with them is complicit. Imo.

THERE IS NO UNCONTROLLED MASS IMMIGRATION.

To make such an assertion you must provide the evidence.

Statements like that are feeding into the VIOLENCE we are seeing in this country at present.

Perhaps you should provide the evidence that there is no mass, uncontrolled immigration. A million and a half new people in the last two years tends to suggest you’re wrong, but I’m open to reading your evidence.
Your statement shows a rather blinkered view, no doubt emanating from your view of a Labour government. No understanding shown that some people, some of our Gransnetters, are concerned about the route of travel from this new government.

But you see it isn’t uncontrolled.

That is normal movement of people employed by businesses in the U.K. -

It is not uncontrolled.

Immigration is vital for the economic health of any country, and what is so remarkable is the real disconnect between the political discourse and economic reality.

Anti- immigrant rhetoric has become a tool by the populist right

What is not controlled and can never be controlled are the level of asylum seekers, however what a government can do is to ensure that the applicants are dealt with competently and without fuss.

MissAdventure Tue 06-Aug-24 12:32:42

Decent people wouldn't want to be any way associated with the rioters.

watch how many time he looks down to read off a script. Not a natural communicator at all. Doubt he will last long as pm

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 06-Aug-24 11:47:29

It seems that people who burn libraries, hotels, and cars, tear up walls and attack police officers don't warm to the new government, karmalady.
Hmm, now let me think - does that make the new government " bad" , or does it make their opponents "bad" ?

MissAdventure Tue 06-Aug-24 11:00:54

In what way?

karmalady Tue 06-Aug-24 10:13:06

Doodledog

They’ve had less than a month in power!

yes and going from bad to worse with every day

maddyone Tue 06-Aug-24 10:07:01

I don’t think demands for evidence is very much in the nature of the site, which is discussion and problem solving for grannies. No need for anyone to be so aggressive but unfortunately some are, not in any way accusing you, just a general observation.
Anyway, really do have to go.

maddyone Tue 06-Aug-24 10:04:31

Point taken growstuff. Obviously I’m fully aware that most of our immigrants are here perfectly legally, but I’m unsure that was what was actually meant by the poster who was corrected. I’m about to get ready to go to out and haven’t time to check back to see the exact post. The word uncontrolled is the key obviously, remove it and you get the meaning that was originally meant, I think. I think the poster meant that mass immigration is causing certain problems, not least insufficient houses (but the housing issue is one I understand it to mean.)
Anyway, gotta go, will look back in later tonight.

But maddyone, most of that is controlled immigration. People are here perfectly legitimately, just as your daughter is in New Zealand. They have visas, have jobs or are studying and pay the NHS a hefty surcharge for treatment most of them won't need.

Maybe you'd like to list which of those immigrants shouldn't be given visas.

Fair enough, Mollygo. But at times since the GE I've thought history is being rewritten before it has even happened 😆

Mollygo Tue 06-Aug-24 08:46:32

2 Labour governments, two negative impacts on pensioners.
Don’t jump on me and say the Tories were bad. I know. That’s why Labour won.
Labour were bad last time, which is why they lost. That’s politics.
I know Labour have only been in power for 4 weeks, but as a pensioner, I feel worried about my future.

MaizieD Tue 06-Aug-24 08:14:13

There’s a lot of history being rewritten on this site today.

In relation to what?
