We've definitely gone way down the list of priorities, so I expect Rachel Reeves reckons that's the Winter Fuel Allowance fiasco well and truly sorted.

Pensioners' problems shoved onto the back burner, as per usual......

MaggsMcG Tue 06-Aug-24 15:07:55

Its not forbidden to demonstrate across the road from Parliament though. The Cystic Fibrosis famlies did it three or four times whist campaigning for the drugs we needed to keep our children and grandchildren alive. I'd be prepared to get out there again to help my less well off friends get a chance to have their Winter Fuel Payment back. I don't see why they cant pay it to any Pensioner who is NOT paying any income tax. That at least would help those only just over the limit for Pension Credit.

Perhaps if everyday policing hadn't disappeared, had not been cut to the bone, antisocial behaviour wasn't an ever-growing problem. Criminals blatantly sticking the preverbial finger up at society as there is very little deterrent we may not be in such an awful situation.
Peaceful protest isn't really possible because of the immediate joining in of these idiots who see it as an excuse to riot.
Looting vape shops??? Says it all.

Unfortunately the selfish rioters have pushed everyone and everything else off the agenda because it's all about them.

Yes, I agree.

springishere Tue 06-Aug-24 14:56:01

What has happened to "Just Stop Oil"? Are they rioting in a different place?

OnwardandUpward Tue 06-Aug-24 14:50:05

Yes the NF supporters are VERY QUIET and not commenting on this for some reason.

Iam64 Tue 06-Aug-24 14:45:29

Starmer has blamed far right rioters for attacking police, trying to burn a hotel where asylum seekers were housed and for attacking Muslims and mosques
All of this is true
He also expressed anger that the rioters showed no respect for the murdered children or their families
It’s dreadful but inevitable that the media’s focus is the riots and concerns about the triggers for such aggressive, racist, violent behaviour.

Babamaman Tue 06-Aug-24 14:27:01

Totally agree with you and they haven’t even been buried yet! Sad times.
The scum rioting have no respect for anyone. Not the poor victims, their families, their community !
Where are the Reform politicians condemning their voters?
Very quiet? Why?

Yep we are yesterdays news buried

This is true and Rachel Reeves will be relieved the cut to pensioners is now yesterday’s news.It won’t be off the agenda forever I predict tho.
For those who think it’s ‘whining’ we can have many different ideas in our heads at the same time.
The shocking murders in Southport and the awful violence in many towns included.

biglouis Tue 06-Aug-24 13:02:06

The (in)famous phrase "A good day to bury bad news" comes to mind.

BevSec Tue 06-Aug-24 12:57:46

I am giving up on this thread. Fact is only fact if certain posters on here say it is!

BevSec Tue 06-Aug-24 12:55:25

That is not from a tabloid.

BevSec Tue 06-Aug-24 12:54:56

I quote “ British PM Starmer says far-right rioters will regret disorder”

But the financial times, for one, has printed that the labour administration has blamed far right thugs. Isnt that where we all get our information from what we read in the newspapers? Why do you think its untrue?

Are you saying that newspapers never print things that are untrue? Do you never look at the front pages of the tabloids?

Iam64 Tue 06-Aug-24 12:47:30

You didn’t report ‘a fact’. You repeated a despicable untrue unproven accusation. You might agree with it but that doesn’t make it true

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 06-Aug-24 12:45:18

Nowhere have I read that any party blamed the " far right" for all of these atrocities.
And the riots are orchestrated/ supported by the government?? Conspiracy theory writ large, and of course, like all such, easy to spread with no evidence whatsoever
and impossible to disprove

BevSec Tue 06-Aug-24 12:45:07

What accusation? How is reporting a fact despicable?

Iam64 Tue 06-Aug-24 12:42:46

Richard Littlejohn has written an excellent piece today about how Labour are taking the opportunity of the riots to keep blaming “the far right” which is taking the focus off the grieving families. Despicable.

That accusation is truly despicable.

The use of the word whining is really horrible. Not a pleasant way to describe other people. In the middle of all this awfulness that’s going on at the moment, there’s no need to be so insulting towards other people, who may well be much worse off than you. We won’t miss the WFA (first time I’ve written that as I’ve been trying not to upset others who will miss it) but some people are seriously worried about how they are going to pay their fuel bills this winter.

I'll use what words I like. I'm going to struggle without the WFA.

Some people are so entitled. No one wants to pay more tax, the Tories oversaw the highest tax rises since WW2. How do you think public services will be improved? Yes wealthy landlords and those who live off unearned income should pay more of their fair share. People rioting and burning police stations and libraries , destroying other peoples communities must be punished.

Indeed
And thanks for listing many of the factors that contributed to the financial mess.

Ronib - you aren’t alone is having been concerned about mental health services for young people and children. Sadly, the government responsible over the past 14 years removed funding.

Iam64 Tue 06-Aug-24 12:33:53

Littlejohn is by no means an independent voice here

BevSec Tue 06-Aug-24 12:31:24

The FinancialTimes has reported that the Labour administration have blamed far right thugs. I would imagine Littlejohn would have double checked the veracity of his article before printing.

No, it's the rioters themselves who have taken the focus away from the grieving families.

MissAdventure Tue 06-Aug-24 12:25:41

When and where have labour blamed the far right?
Genuine question, as I've not kept up with events of late.
