The Riots Have Certainly Pushed Pensioners Off The Agenda

We've definitely gone way down the list of priorities, so I expect Rachel Reeves reckons that's the Winter Fuel Allowance fiasco well and truly sorted.

Pensioners' problems shoved onto the back burner, as per usual......

MissAdventure Tue 06-Aug-24 12:23:33

Whenever I hear "wake up, people!", I know a conspiracy theory is on it's way.

BevSec Tue 06-Aug-24 12:23:13

Richard Littlejohn has written an excellent piece today about how Labour are taking the opportunity of the riots to keep blaming “the far right” which is taking the focus off the grieving families. Despicable.

So what exactly are you saying about the riots?

They're "made up"?

Ir ramped up, to divert attention from other things?

That was the implication imo sad

MissAdventure Tue 06-Aug-24 12:18:40

The pity if it is, that element of all this has been overridden by all the other issues.

ronib Tue 06-Aug-24 12:15:45

There will be more to be announced in the October statement so we’re definitely jumping the gun but that’s not surprising.
I would very much like to say that I have always had concerns about the non treatment of young people with types of psychosis. There’s no way of knowing what prompted a 17 year old boy to go on a killing spree. We need to wait for evidence. I can only hope that better health outcomes happen if and it’s a big if, a 17 year old boy had undiagnosed mental illness which resulted in this appalling loss of life.

Yep we are yesterdays news buried

Yes I think there is an agenda… and a lot of underlying problems with the riots which I think have been handled very badly by this government… a lot of people have very legitimate concerns about the state of this country which are being pushed under the table

undines Tue 06-Aug-24 11:58:45

Doesn't ANYONE think there could be a hidden agenda here???
The riots are very convenient for turning everyone's attention away from everything except, well, the riots, and thinking about ways to stop them.
Which will lead to more government control, censorship (which we have already, in spades) and generally much less attention to all the things that worry so many people, such as warmth, housing, food on the table... Call this a Labour government? Wake up! Michael Foot would turn in his grave.

The use of the word whining is really horrible. Not a pleasant way to describe other people. In the middle of all this awfulness that’s going on at the moment, there’s no need to be so insulting towards other people, who may well be much worse off than you. We won’t miss the WFA (first time I’ve written that as I’ve been trying not to upset others who will miss it) but some people are seriously worried about how they are going to pay their fuel bills this winter.

💯agree

It's not necessary to be well off to put things into perspective.
As the op said, they've been moved down on the agenda.

Casdon Mon 05-Aug-24 10:48:17

It’s wrong to say it’s off the Agenda though. Anybody who has attended meetings knows that the agenda always contains lots of items. You deal with the most urgent first, and get to the other issues after that.

Cadeby

dear me, the greed and whining on here.

3 lovely little children gone. Their families utterly devasted.

Parts of the country in flames.

I don’t think it’s whining to the pensioners who are on the breadline, who are going to struggle to pay their winter fuel bills. The horrendous murder of those poor girls & attack of the other victims is besides the point- you are probably well off, who knows?

vegansrock Mon 05-Aug-24 10:33:56

Financial!

vegansrock Mon 05-Aug-24 10:33:41

Here’s one reason why the country is in a facial mess-
Dido Harding £40,000,000,000 Matt Hancock's Pub Landlord £29,000,000
Matt Hancock's mistress's brother £30,000,000 Matt Hancock's friends at the Jockey Club £15,000,000
Michelle Mone £200,000,000
Let’s get some of that back! Or charge them with fraud!

vegansrock Mon 05-Aug-24 10:21:55

Some people are so entitled. No one wants to pay more tax, the Tories oversaw the highest tax rises since WW2. How do you think public services will be improved? Yes wealthy landlords and those who live off unearned income should pay more of their fair share. People rioting and burning police stations and libraries , destroying other peoples communities must be punished.

Oreo Mon 05-Aug-24 10:19:10

I have been busy thinking about the design of my placards to take to march outside Parliament but my son tells me that it’s forbidden to demonstrate there. But not suggesting rioting for grannies…..

How about, like the episode of Father Ted,
Down With This Sort Of Thing!😁

Charleygirl5 Mon 05-Aug-24 10:15:41

Rachel Reeves will be wondering how they will pay for these riots but no worries, she will have another look at what we rich pensioners can provide. She is welcome to my £10 Christmas bonus and the extra 25p I receive weekly on my pension which is age-related.

The triple lock will go next year and why not tax our premium bond winnings? There must be other little nuggets.

nanna8 Mon 05-Aug-24 09:15:25

They will chuck out half the crims on early parole to make room for them.

Mollygo Mon 05-Aug-24 08:49:27

Sarnia
No measly fine or community service but with our prisons at bursting point where will the hundreds of rioters already arrested go?

No need to worry,
The home secretary has said prison places "are ready" for the "thuggish minority of criminals" rioting across the UK, ahead of an emergency COBRA meeting today

One thing we can be sure of there will be no change to the decision regarding Winter Fuel Allowance, as far as pensioners go this Parliament has shown its hand nice and early.
Just wondering can the protesters elect for a trial by Jury?

You are right with your remark on Winter Fuel payments. That ship has now sailed.
Labour need to be setting a strict deterrent to rioters. No measly fine or community service but with our prisons at bursting point where will the hundreds of rioters already arrested go? Might I suggest Bibby Stockholm. Labour are planning to close it down now it is empty. It was deemed good enough for migrants so put the protesters there.

Babs03 Mon 05-Aug-24 08:43:23

As a pensioner I don’t expect to take precedence over what has been happening recently.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 05-Aug-24 08:35:47

One week ago today.
