Terror threat raised to ‘probable’

They have just raised our terror threat level up to the highest level for many years here in Australia. They have said it is ‘likely’ there will be a terror attack within the next 12 months. Not a pleasant thought, they are looking at disaffected people, mainly as a result of the middle eastern conflicts. I really wish they would leave their grievances back in their countries of origin, we don’t need it here - we have our own problems like most countries do.

It must be immediate in this country - so count yourself lucky.

Callistemon213 Mon 05-Aug-24 09:35:58

It is substantial here. Thank goodness for our security services, police and emergency services.

Callistemon213 Mon 05-Aug-24 09:39:33

It used to be colour coded.

Hopefully they will foil any planned attacks nanna8 on Australian soil. The world is a dangerous place due to Muslim extremists now but the intelligence is really good to keep us safe and many plots never come to anything thanks to that.

In the U.K. our biggest threat is from white supremicists according to our intelligent agencies.

Not Islamic extremists.

We never used to get all this stuff but I suppose post war everyone was exhausted and not wanting any more conflict. Memories are short. We used to feel really sad about our relatives who lost their lives fighting and all of us thought , ‘never again’. My parents were both ex RAF and both had experienced a lot of shocking losses of family and friends. What’s wrong with people ? We don’t need it, life’s hard enough .

It never ends does it nanna8? ☹️

The biggest threat world wide is from Muslim extremist groups.

VioletSky Mon 05-Aug-24 10:08:49

I was reading the news in this earlier, it is clear that the risk comes from many sources, right wing extremists being one

Maybe this is as a result of what is happening here

Yes, I do wish they were called Terrorits rather than ‘thugs’ because that’s exactly what they are.

Definition of Terrorism - the unlawful use of violence and intimidation especially against civilians in pursuit of political aims.

In the US the greatest threat must surely come from Trump's cult following? Mostly white christian, I believe...

MI5 might differ.
I think they are the ones to know.

Islamist terrorism is the most significant terrorist threat to the UK by volume.

Copied from the link you provided, as defined by The Crown Prosecution Service.

“The Terrorism Act 2000 defines terrorism, both in and outside of the UK, as the use or threat of one or more of the actions listed below, and where they are designed to influence the government, or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public. The use or threat must also be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.

The specific actions included are:serious violence against a person; serious damage to property;
endangering a person's life (other than that of the person committing the action);
creating a serious risk to the health or safety of the public or a section of the public; and
action designed to seriously interfere with or seriously to disrupt an electronic system.
The use or threat of action, as set out above, which involves the use of firearms or explosives is terrorism regardless of whether or not the action is designed to influence the government or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public or a section of the public.”

Thank you for posting the relevant info Callistemon213😃
I felt sure that extreme Muslim ideology was the main threat, and indeed it is.That doesn’t mean other threats are insignificant.
Worldwide it’s the case too.

I was writing of world wide.
The US is big I grant you, but not the world.

I think nanna8 is in Australia, not the USA.

JaneJudge Mon 05-Aug-24 12:55:14

something is happening isn't it?
I live in a quiet suburb, it has it's problems like any other but it's mainly just families, nice schools etc
this weekend there was a group fight nr the precinct and a child got shot.
The police are patrolling and haven't left
a few weeks ago similar happened in another suburb but that was a stabbing. I am really, really concerned about the increasing levels of violence but maybe all the bad news is making me worry more

One major threat to peace is due to the continuing apartheid regime in Israel since 1948, the current slaughter and deliberate starvation etc in Gaza, their illegal settlements in the West Bank, their bombing campaigns in Tehran and Lebanon and threats to invade the latter again. This has unsurprisingly led to threats of retaliation. Churchill said we would fight the Germans ‘on the beaches, in the streets, in the fields’ etc if they invaded, If you were driven from your home would you just shrug and say ok?
War makes money for a lot of people, probably why the US has been having or funding so many wars since independence.
