Since January, an amendment to the Online Safety Act 2023 allows for the prosecution of those who convey information that they know to be false and “if the person intended the message, or the information in it, to cause non-trivial psychological or physical harm to a likely audience”.
Ashley Fairbrother, a senior prosecutor at the law firm Edmonds Marshall McMahon, said: “This now makes the circulation of damaging and false information online into an offence in its own right.”
A former director of public prosecutions, Lord Ken Macdonald KC, spelled out on Monday how he believed investigators would want to quickly identify individuals who are involved in “online organisation, online incitement and online conspiracies”.
“I think prosecutors will want to have a strategy to identify people who may have been involved in inciting and encouraging these events, and they will want to arrest them and build cases against them. These are, in one sense, the most important people,”

@MaizieD I have gone back and checked. You are right. I must have misread but it is on the BBC website all the same on this stream
The report falsely claims that that the 17-year old suspect is an "asylum seeker" named "Ali Al-Shakati", who "arrived in the UK by boat last year"
A long time poster JaneJudge posted she had read it on the BBC site and doubled down on this. She apologised but insisted that was her source.
I watched Newsnight last night and two people including the presenter stated several times that Tommy Robinson was inciting riots whilst relaxing in his multi million pound villa in Cyprus. He’s staying in a hotel. They stated this several times. It’s not true but that’s the BBC.
I have been rounded on here before for posting stuff others disagree with and my source is rubbish only to prove otherwise and even received an apology once.
Google is your friend is another. There’s all sorts of stuff on Google that’s incorrect.
A prolific left wing member on here provided the Daily Mail as her source a few days ago. Not a peep because it suited the narrative. Post a link from mail offering an alternative view and it’s rubbished.
Perhaps it it more 'screen addiction', which we all, to some degree, have.
If I am awake in the night I make a strong effort to not start glaring at a screen because the brain becomes active and you may not be able to get back to sleep
Your choice - I read all my books on my iPad, sometimes the paper online and sometimes GN

Also reading a book called Values Voice and Virtues by Matthew Goodwin. It is a dispassionate and balanced book about how mass immigration is changing our culture. Worth a read whatever your point of view.

He was on TalkTV this morning, thought you might be interested BevSec
It doesn't surprise me that you like him. His views are right wing - and he doesn't deny it.
The media outlet that released the false information was called Channel3 Now and this article from the Telegraph explains what it is; a Russian-linked ‘news’ outlet.
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/08/03/obscure-russian-linked-news-outlet-fuelling-violence/#:~:text=Recipes-,The%20obscure%20Russian%2Dlinked%20'news'%20outlet%20fuelling%20violence%20on,How%20did%20this%20happen%3F&text=Before%20the%20fire%20and%20fury,name%20%E2%80%93%20Ali%20Al%2DShakati.
I remember the wrong info being posted by a Gransnetter, and a link to Channel3 Now. The thread was taken down.
A name like that looks so genuine doesn't it; easy to confuse with a BBC site.
Thank you Nicenanny3, I will have a look.

Time of posting was seen as a big red flag during the Brexit debates on mumsnet - anyone posting pro brexit posts in the early hours of the morning was called a Russian Bot. I didn’t agree tbh but that’s what was happening.
But I do think it’s a bit odd, if you’re living in the UK, to be C&P’ing articles from the guardian at 3’ O’clock in the morning. But I do think it’s a bit odd, if you’re living in the UK, to be C&P’ing articles from the guardian at 3’ O’clock in the morning.
It's unusual I grant you.
You say it's "odd". I've been known to do online banking in the early hours of the morning when I couldn't sleep as well as pinging off emails to various people.
Explain it to me. This 'oddness'.

if you wouldn’t say it face to face don’t say it on social media
GrannySomerset I totally agree.

Wyllow I know I keep repeating myself but the BBC posted the wrong information as well. Actual media outlets are to blame too.
I'm really doubting your memory, JJ.
The only information I saw on the BBC about the attacker was that he was 17 and came from Cardiff.
I am positive that the BBC wouldn't have published more than what they had been told by the police.
The 'name' and asylum seeker details came from posters on the thread (which has now gone, so there's no way of checking).
The only 'media outlet' publishing the lies about him that I saw was the fake news site which someone linked too.

1000’s of illegals arriving by small boats every year ( & have been for decades ) & absolutely nothing - repeat nothing - being done about it is a fact.
Social media is not making that up!
That’s what these riots are about.
How is burning down a library, looting Gregs, Lush and Shoezone in any way related to migrants?
They are far right thugs that do not represent the majority of this country.
People can post what they like, when they like.
What a total load of old tripe, monitoring other peoples posting times.
Well said, Not spaghetti.
InnocentBystander spot on!
How is it that a simple thread like this has turned into a finger-wagging one?
Lots of us are ip at 3 and you can hardly accuse a long-time Gransnetter of being a bot!
I think this is really a thread about spreading lies and hatred on the Internet.
We have all seen a lot of deliberate stirring on Gransnet. Some have brought this hatred onto this site as though it is fact.
I am no more perfect than anyone else but I do try to check facts before posting.
I don't accept that "facts" are generally found on Facebook or Twitter - unless they are properly sourced - this is where half truths and out of context things seem to come from.

Apologies if this has been suggested already. If everyone was obliged to reveal their name, address, and contact number, supported by documentary proof, before a social media account was granted, and compelled to use their real name (only, not the other private details) on the site instead of a forum name, then much of the dangerous stuff would stop.

What has attacking mosques and setting fire to shoe shops got to do with illegal immigration?
I am guessing that people are angry.
A bit like, if a person is angry, they lash out.
So a bad day at the office can result in a wife beating, type thing.
Sure there are much better examples than that, but best I can think of for now.
are you saying they are particular type of individual? ie. violent?
I came on this thread hoping to talk about the O/P, which seems important as the whole saga begun - I recall the thread here and events so well - with the false information on S/M put about the person who attacked those poor children just over a week ago.
That they were a muslim migrant. Against the wishes of the people of Southport, a targeted riot happened that night, and its been continued.
I feel we should all be concerned about fake news.
One day it could happen to us or those close to us.

I agree, and I think on Gransnet we should stop feeding the beast. The more responses there are, the more permission we are giving for the lunatics to take over the asylum. I’m guilty, because some posts are deliberately very provocative, but I’m sitting on my hands. Blanking is the way forward.
Blanking? Ah yes - you mean Censorship......
No, I mean not responding. We all have that individual choice.

Some folk on here should look to their laurels. I can't believe the number of hateful, hysterical and racist and biased posts that have been made on this site. It's enough to make me want to step away.
