False information and incitement on SM and prosecuting the perpetrators

Since January, an amendment to the Online Safety Act 2023 allows for the prosecution of those who convey information that they know to be false and “if the person intended the message, or the information in it, to cause non-trivial psychological or physical harm to a likely audience”.
Ashley Fairbrother, a senior prosecutor at the law firm Edmonds Marshall McMahon, said: “This now makes the circulation of damaging and false information online into an offence in its own right.”

A former director of public prosecutions, Lord Ken Macdonald KC, spelled out on Monday how he believed investigators would want to quickly identify individuals who are involved in “online organisation, online incitement and online conspiracies”.
“I think prosecutors will want to have a strategy to identify people who may have been involved in inciting and encouraging these events, and they will want to arrest them and build cases against them. These are, in one sense, the most important people,”

Twenty past three in the morning?
Dearie me.

Yes ridiculous isn't it.

Why is it ridiculous to post at 3.20 am? I was woken at 3 am by roadworks taking place right outside my flat. I was wide awake anyway and dipped into GN and read WW2's post then. I also dipped into some other threads. At no time did I think it was a ridiculous thing to do in the early hours.

HousePlantQueen Tue 06-Aug-24 09:21:30

And still some don't get it and resort to commenting about the time OP started the thread.

One of my neighbours is Muslim and has so much security stuff on their house. Now I know why sad

You can talk about immigration and politics but this is about outsiders trying to destroy our communities. Organised violence carried out by people from outside in our towns whilst they all return to their villages. It is senseless and unnecessary and is a problem. How anyone can support this is beyond me.

Maybe if these violent men integrated more they'd have less to fear

👍👏👏👏👏👏

“Laughable really - under the previous government the beast got fed on a daily basis on here.
Yes it is laughable and quite clearly an effort to stop debate or any criticism of Starmer/Labour.“

feeding the beast is absolutely nothing to do with not criticising labour!

Critique all you want, it’s perfectly fine!

It’s about
1) not blaming migrants for all our woes, 2) spreading misinformation quite deliberately
3) xenophobia
4) being deliberately divisive

Anyone, anyone at all, who condones the riots, attacks on mosques, attacking Moslems (or any other cohort of people) needs to give their heads a good wobble!

Methinks you are just sore that you yourself had a post removed for spreading lies and misinformation ! Or do you regard lies and misinformation genuine debate? I honestly don’t know how you have the gall to write this sad

Exactly - ad hominem of course

And just saw that - crikey, who posts on GN at 3’ o’clock in the morning?

Many of us, judging by the various “Nightowl” threads we have had.
Sometimes the wee small hours are when thought is clearest -and with all that is going on, our brains don’t switch off with Horlicks and Newsnight.

Or are you saying posting during office hours only is your preference?

Your point being……?

I think it was just a bit of pointless snideness... 😆

I think that I will begin to post stuff about the situation in the U.K. like we did on the 100 days thread.

Hopefully it will stop misinformation, lies, racist rhetoric (some hope) etc.

I’ll do it later - busy morning

Are you applying for a job as a moderator by any chance!
Where is any proof of racist comments on any GN threads?
Talk about OTT pearl clutching.

1000’s of illegals arriving by small boats every year ( & have been for decades ) & absolutely nothing - repeat nothing - being done about it is a fact.
Social media is not making that up!

That’s what these riots are about.

Yes I totally agree Kandinsky but some seem unable to accept the facts. Heads in the sand.

As the Labour government is finding to the countries cost after 14 years of the Tories sweeping things under the carpet in the form of major economic mismanagement, small state mentality, incompetence snd corruption

I agree with this but I also think the media is to blame too. They are not supposed to post lies/misinformation but they do and then apologise. Well in this case, it's too late. Then add in social media sad

Our MP has given out media statements asking for calm as our closest town has a multi cultural population and the social media outlets had earmarked it for EDL protest. He and other community leaders have asked for people not to speculate on social media platforms as it is inflaming the situation and is leading to misinformation and tension.

I posted on another thread but there was an incident where I live (in a suburb - also multicultural) on Friday and the police haven't left and I believe it is to do with what is happening countrywide. I think they are expecting unrest. It is worrying.

It’s very worrying

GrannySomerset Tue 06-Aug-24 08:54:12

I am reminded of the advice given to children of my generation - if you can’t say something constructive don’t say anything. Think this needs upgrading to if you wouldn’t say it face to face don’t say it on social media. I am depressed as well as horrified by some of the posts I have read in the past week.
