Don’t mess with the tolerant people in Brighton.

So, the fascists turned up outside of the targeted building, and as far as I can see the road is full of the tolerant folk who are as someone said are really tolerant of tolerance, and very intolerant of intolerance.

I've no idea if it's true, but the word here in Brighton is that the fascists were met off the trains by drag queens and a samba band.

You don't have to be an idiot to bring white supremacy to the most welcoming and inclusive city in the country, but it sure helps

I can think of better ways to be stimulated. 😄
I only come on here when I’m bored stiff.

I enjoy your contributions.

I don't think that anything is happening to Gnet. It's just the same as it has been for the past 8 years that I've been on it.

The 'why do you stay here?' remark made to Kandinsky made me laugh, we Remain voters were told it so often after the Brexit vote... without complaining about it or reporting it. I thought its re-emergence was rather ironic...

I have been through all 5 pages of this thread. I thought Orreo was being rather obsessive about the Labour councillor. Person after person said that it was a disgusting thing for him to say. I'm not sure what else they were meant to say when Orreo kept insisting that no-one would talk about it...

I took the 'only one' comment to mean that this was the only comment from 'the left' that had been widely reported. Was this an 'excuse' or merely stating a fact?

Thanks for the wider context, Callistemon. If nothing else, it shows that crowd behaviour can be complex and the desire for revenge is universal, has little to do with political labels...

Kandinsky Fri 09-Aug-24 11:17:25

Well it needs clarification.

Because if me saying ‘ arguing with strangers on the internet is pointless’ is breaking talk guidelines,
Yet someone telling me ‘*Away and bile your heid* isn’t?
people will be confused.

Callistemon213 Fri 09-Aug-24 11:08:53

That doesn't appear to be against guidelines 🤔

But what do I know!!

I excepted this when I came in, a pile on, a few seizing the words of one disgusting counsellor who hopefully will be charged appropriately:

.... against the hundreds of rants on and offline made by the rioters and their puppet masters many thankfully arrested and hopefully imprisoned

......against the suffering of the families in Southport who not only had the murders in their community but the rioting mobs that night and have been trying to heal their community.

Get things in perspective.

Celebrate tolerance and call out intolerance wherever it occurs, but keep perspective.

Indeed call out ALL who make racist/inflammatory speeches or remarks or use threatening language. ALL irrespective of their position or social standing or political persuasion.

It’s what any normal decent person would want.

I’m ashamed he’s Labour, but like I don’t think all Muslims are terrorists, I don’t believe he represents the LP.

My post was in reply to Callistemon213

Kandinsky Fri 09-Aug-24 11:05:06

That was said to me.
It wasn’t deleted as I didn’t report it.

But this post of mine;

No problem.
These discussions are always pointless as no one ever changes their mind. It’s just strangers arguing with each other which is pretty sad ( to me anyway )

Has been deleted for breaking talk guidelines.
Someone obviously reported it.

Now I can’t see a single thing wrong with that post. I’m not personally attacking anyone.
I’ve asked HQ to explain why it was deleted.

Yes, that Councillor has been arrested but trying to claim he was a lone voice is disingenuous.

Who is 'trying to claim he was a lone voice'? As this has been discussed across threads, it's perfectly possible that I've missed it - I'm not being argumentative.

And Oreo - yes, I think it's newsworthy, but I also think that the reason we are 'debating' it is for the reasons I have outlined more than once. There is really little to be said, other than to agree that it was wrong and support his arrest, which people have done.

Who is 'trying to claim he was a lone voice'?

It's a red herring
And he is just ONE

And other such comments on threads.

He may be just one person (who is not? 🤔) but there was a cheering crowd around him.

Tommy Robinson is just one as well.

Both extremists from opposite ends of the spectrum.

Let's look t the full picture.

Oh so it isn’t just one post. You are saying that a lot of people have suggested it now.

Well I think you are incorrect.

However, the man has now been arrested. So job done.

Callistemon213 Fri 09-Aug-24 10:57:39

I am trying to be non-partisan but obviously few on GN are.

Someone asked another poster who was concerned about what is happening in Britain, why does she stay here? (nasty!)

I wonder what is happening to Gransnet.

No-one as far as I know has suggested he's a "lone voice"

Earlier in the thread, foxie48.

Re-read it.

You have misread the meaning

Really?

Well if you quoted the post in mind at least we would all be singing from the same hymn sheet. And the poster could if they wish defend their comment.

Innuendo doesn’t cut it I’m afraid and causes confusion and upset.

Oreo Fri 09-Aug-24 10:12:53

My phone isn’t letting me quote, but this is in reply to Oreo.

Please don’t tell me what I’d ‘rather not talk about. I can speak for myself. The question was about why we are having the discussion. The reason, as I see it, is that the subject of the councillor, who has been supported by absolutely no one on here has come up is to detract and distract from talking about the tactics of Farage, Tice, Tate and their cronies. There is very little to say about him (I forget his name). He said a stupid and inflammatory thing, was arrested and has been suspended. Nobody is disputing that or suggesting that the arrest and suspension should not have happened. It’s a dead cat, yes.

So quite clearly you think that the only reason the shocking rant by the Councillor being talked about is to distract from anyone else talking about Farage?Really?!

Oreo Fri 09-Aug-24 10:10:47

Nobody has misread anything.

Callistemon213 No-one as far as I know has suggested he's a "lone voice". There are racists lurking in every political party, in every union, on many streets in the UK and abroad, probably in many families, which is why, IMHO, threads like this one are not necessarily about the views of labour supporters. I would hope that most of us, regardless of political leanings do not support the behaviour of those thugs who have used a terrible tragedy to fan the flames of racism.

Farzanah Fri 09-Aug-24 09:24:15

Thanks for that comment Cadenby, much how I feel.

Callistemon213 Fri 09-Aug-24 09:16:28

Yes, that Councillor has been arrested but trying to claim he was a lone voice is disingenuous.

He had, according to reports, a cheering, applauding crowd behind him so how long before some of that baying mob decided to take revenge?
He was shouting "Free Palestine" so quite what that has to do with the horrific crimes in Southport is puzzling.
Any excuse for anarchy?

A councillor suspended by Labour has been arrested over a speech calling for the throats of ‘fascists’ to be cut.

Dartford councillor Ricky Jones has been suspended by the party over a video which shows him in the middle of a cheering crowd at a protest in Walthamstow, east London, organised to stop the far-right from targeting asylum centres and the offices of lawyers helping asylum seekers.

In the speech on Wednesday evening, he said: “We need to cut all their throats and get rid of them.”
