This is a thread in answer to a question on a thread totally unrelated to the crossings.

This isn’t about the rights and wrongs of it, or why Asylum Seekers don’t seek Asylum in the first safe country they come across, though if you do wish to know more click on this link!

www.unhcr.org/uk/refugees#:~:text=They%20provide%20the%20universal%20definition,freedom%20would%20be%20at%20risk.

For reasons why people seek asylum here in the UK:-

Enough info here (I hope) to both explain and to be balanced.

I’m not going to rise to the bait, but check out mainstream media (BBC, ITV, Sky and Reuters for example), and report back on how many different occasions over the last, let’s say three months, there is a non-deaths related report/pictures related to English Channel crossings by small boat. Or carry on regardless.

MaizieD Tue 20-Aug-24 16:15:17

I think that people aren't seeing it because it isn't on the media they use every single day. Nor are they particularly looking for the information every day.

GB News has an anti-immigration bias, so has an interest in keeping people indignant about the small boats, that's their audience. Likewise the DM and other rightward leaning print media.

It’s over all kinds of media, I don’t get why some are denying it
🤔

Because they think they are always right Oreo😉

These discussions never seem to move beyond the playground. I watch a number of news channels and know that pictures of boats arriving only appear very occasionally when something specific has happened now, and I’m not getting into a completely pointless discussion about GB News. Time to be grown up.

Try actually turning your TV on then Casdon. 🤣🤣

Several people have told you it’s on most channels but you still insist because you don’t see it, it can’t be true. I think you brought upGB News in the first place.

This is so true of any thread where news or politics or one or two other subjects comes under discussion.

They even tell you on the radio now. I had Classic FM on the other day and during the news section it told you how many crossings there had been, so it has definitely become a 'thing'

Grandmabatty Tue 20-Aug-24 10:34:00

Heavily weighted to right wing media. BBC was referring to the Illegal Migrants Bill. And a photograph doesn't actually say what the article was about. And no, I'm not daft. I taught bias and can identify it on both sides, thank you

GrannyGravy13 Tue 20-Aug-24 10:31:19

I can honestly say I have seen reports on ITV, BBC and Channel 4 news regarding people arriving in small boats.

Definitely saw items with video and stills on local TV when I was away on the South Coast 10 days ago.

Primrose53 Tue 20-Aug-24 10:17:06

Do people think they’re being clever by referencing GB News and making daft comments?

Nobody has said they get their figures or photos from there. Most channels show footage of illegal immigrants being escorted through border control wrapped in blankets. Walk past the newspaper stands in any supermarket and there are always such photos on the front pages.

I just googled and this is just the first page of hundreds showing photos from all sources so don’t try and make out it is just GB News!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 20-Aug-24 10:16:02

Thanks foxie48 I read the report too quickly and not carefully enough.

Just a small correction to GG13's post,

"About 85% of small boat arrivals in the 12 months to March 2024 were male and - where age was recorded - nearly a fifth were between 25 and 39 years old. "

I don't find it surprising as the majority of refugees are male, for women, the journey across the world from Afghanistan, Syria, Iran and Eritrea would be even harder than it is for men who are still fit, it's even more hazardous for women who have children. IME it is normal for refugees to think they can get jobs and send money home back to their families to help them survive, they are not necessarily escaping their responsibilities often quite the reverse.

This has been pointed out time and time again, foxie48. It makes absolute sense that the fittest family members should be the one to make these dangerous journeys. Many families couldn't afford to finance more than one member so choose the one most likely to make it.

As for women, if you could only scrape together enough money to fund one person would you really choose a woman who would not only have to cope with the hardships but would be almost certain to suffer sexual violence at some point?

I find it ironic that these 'fit young men' who make it to the UK are supposedly clogging up the NHS. Schrodinger's immigrant...hmm

JaneJudge Tue 20-Aug-24 10:14:47

and as someone mentioned earlier, a particular company are making an absolute fortune out of the 'crisis'

Wyllow3 Tue 20-Aug-24 10:10:44

Thank you Maizie. Words like refugee and asylum seeker are being substituted not just by "migrants" but continually associated with crime, terrorism, danger, attacks, in MSM. It may be subtle compared with onslaughts in SM, but it's pervasive and constant. We do need faster processing in order to determine if they are needed economic migrants but until that point they are technically asylum seekers.

ronib Tue 20-Aug-24 10:06:10

Casdon I was impressed that Jacob’s daughter was reading some comments last night even though her microphone wasn’t working. Jacob is clearly a committed family man and I like him for that. It feels rare these days.

I do find it difficult to listen to Jacob Rees Mogg, he’s a pretentious piffler ronib. However, I totally agreed with what he said the other day about how disgusted and upset he was that his 16 year old son received death threats about the election, that is absolutely horrendous.

MaizieD Tue 20-Aug-24 09:55:16

The daily Mail has been feeding the anti-migrant line for years. It certainly needs to change its language, but it won't.

Just look at this set of search results. Images of DM front page headlines.

ronib Tue 20-Aug-24 09:52:25

Casdon well I can tell you that the same thing is not on this news channel - and some times it’s boring and gets switched off. It depends on the particular presenter although I can imagine that you would find it difficult to watch Jacob Rees Mogg.

Casdon Tue 20-Aug-24 09:48:47

Because Mt61 said it was, ronib?

ronib Tue 20-Aug-24 09:46:42

Casdon how do you know that the same thing is on GB news if you don’t watch it? Just curious 🤨

Casdon Tue 20-Aug-24 09:44:20

If people want to watch the same thing on GB News every night to reinforce their view that’s up to them. I prefer to watch actual news than propaganda.

JaneJudge Tue 20-Aug-24 09:44:17

The people traffickers are different issue to the people seeking refuge. Someone posted a really good article some time ago about two brothers that had travelled from Iran (I think one had drowned) It was all a mess sad I've tried to find the article but it just comes up with hundreds of other awful stories

Freya5 Tue 20-Aug-24 09:41:50

" migrant boat losses" Look at the language you use.

They are people. Sometimes children.

As reported by the MSM. We know they are human beings, perhaps the MSM should change their language, yes??
