Those statements were made when? The previous government were less than transparent. Maybe things have come to light that change progression. I accept some statements made now need a rethink.
Over the last 14 years the economy, businesses and personal security have been trashed. Evidence for that is at least the 46 days of Liz Truss.
It is early days and I hope over the long term all aspects of life improve. What is the alternative?
Obviously, those pensioners in need should be supported more.

Starmer's speech 27th Aug 24
(305 Posts)I can't see another thread on this so thought I would start one. Apologies if I have just missed it.
I will try to give a quick overview of the beginning of the speech:
No one could possibly have foreseen for one second that the Conservatives were not being completely honest about the state of the nations finances. It was therefore a terrible shock to find a "black hole". This means that any promises made before the election, e.g. not removing the winter fuel allowance, can now be totally disregarded.

-Not one pledge is untarnished. Here are the 5 missions - again several looking rather weak. The Labour manifesto 2024 talks about lowering energy bills. He supported 50s women- now silence (even the Express has noticed) He seems to be actively supporting Ukraine war and is silent on the Gazan genocide-
“I must have missed the bit where he pledged to achieve all this within 8 weeks of being elected and before his first Budget.”
I too must have missed this! I’ve also seen no evidence that he is “supporting” the Ukraine war. I need to do a bit of digging re Gaza.
Yes Siope Or attacking Starmer for things that are due to 14 years of previous governments. Or something he's done right, like settling the junior doctors strikes. (its all the "evil unions" in the LP, when the BMA is not affiliated to the L Party and never has been)

But the black hole will get even blacker and bigger- abolish university tuition fees? At what cost? Fully costed? More spin than my grandmother’s spin dryer.

Starmer is a liar. There are countless examples (sorry none to hand but investigate on the alternative media if you are interested - BBC isn't going to 'dob him in') Nothing would surprise me, except if I see the poor becoming less poor under his premiership. But sadly they won't.
I think if you’re going to call someone a liar you need concrete irrefutable evidence.
Here are the ten pledges on which he was elected leader. "Based on the moral case for socialism". Not one pledge is untarnished.

Netanyahu is still banned from this country though? Didn’t Sunak plan to remove the ban!
I do t think I can do better than to quote Ian Dunt, political columnist at the Independent:
“Plenty to be wary of in Starmer's pain-is-coming message, particularly on whether Labour sticks to Tory departmental spending plans. But you can tell a lot about people already attacking Starmer for decisions they do not yet know he has made.”

Actually I’ll rephrase, it will save millions.

Why didn't they start by reviewing the £300+ per day paid to those who turn up at the unelected House of Lords, they could cancel the subsidised restaurants and bars in both House of Commons and House of Lords, then also stop the "energy" allowance given to MPs to pay for heating their second homes - or perhaps they think pensioners have the "broadest shoulders"
Agree, such great ideas, cross party savings and would raise millions.

Apparently there are ‘none to hand’, how very convenient.
I am, at the moment, reading a book called Doner.
A story where the population has risen by billions. Elders are being asked to donate their lives to make room for newborns. One life, one death. Is this our future? Kill the oldies off first. Oh the doner is given one hour to meet the new baby before he/she is disposed of.

It’s going to be a very long five years.
It’s been a very very long 14 years!
Austerity started the rot, many many public sector workers saw both their salaries frozen and spending cuts in their departments/schools. We did not need austerity, it did absolutely nothing other than push people into poverty!

If you’re going to call ANYONE a liar, but cannot or will not provide links or evidence, other than saying “alternative media” please don’t expect anyone to take you seriously.

huge wage rise to already well paid Traindrivers??? just asking
That ‘huge wage rise’ is over three years and adds up to less than the rate of inflation over those years. Workers will always strive to maintain their living standards and if they are fortunate enough to belong to a union prepared to fight for that aim then good luck to them. My husband worked in the rail industry for 48 years, I know how hard these people work and the impact working antisocial hours has on their families.

I am increasingly of the opinion that nothing you read in the newspapers or hear from a politician is the truth. Everything is edited for their own purposes and the public will never know the true picture about any of it.
Personally I think the LP will be disastrous for those of us who have worked hard all our lives, paid into the system and saved money. The LP is all about reducing people to the same level rather than helping the less fortunate to prosper.
It certainly isn’t!
Have a good long look at the Tory levelling up Dept/scheme and their pledge to eradicate child poverty by 2020 (I worked on this disastrous project!)
Under any government, austerity means politicians don’t suffer what they impose on the country, whatever they call it.
Elections are called because the country gets fed up and doesn’t trust the government so they vote in the next government.
Every government blames the previous government for the mess they left and the actions they took which caused the mess.
The internet gives us greater opportunity than TV and newspapers did to vociferously support the actions of the party they support, ignoring any lies, untruths, misleading statements, claims of ”not knowing” etc, their party puts out. And so it goes on.
^ Well yes Mollygo, austerity is generally accepted under the Tories.^
Another sweeping statement. 👏👏
Are you claiming that all Conservative voters thought it was the right thing to do?
Are you saying that all Labour voters accepted Gordon Brown’s actions as the right thing to do?
Accept means ^ consent to receive something offered.
For most people (my sweeping statement),
Austerity was foisted on the population - impose an unwelcome or unnecessary thing
They all lie to get into power! One party is as bad as another.

Well, I can’t remember the last time I actually had any interest added to my saving and there wasn’t a Labour government during that time.
