IHT is the cruellest of all the taxes. It is also the one that is least justified. It is a fundamental human desire to care for one’s offspring. That’s why many people continue working hard even after the essentials have been paid for. To see the fruits of a life’s work taken by government at a time when you are also coming to terms with the death of a beloved parent is heartbreaking. I cannot understand why we are not allowed to accumulate family wealth in this country when it could be so beneficial if more people were independent. The money paid on my father’s estate would have bought a healthy pension for the two of his five daughters who had been denied the chance to build up a works pension. We are told we should have provided for our own old age and yet the chance to do so was limited by this obscene tax.
Of course we have to pay the tax the government dictates but that doesn’t make it right. Our tax system is far too complicated. It discourages enterprise, thrift and independence and encourages profligacy and dependency.
A fundamental overhaul is long overdue but I’m not holding my breath.
I can't believe that you honestly think that the alternative to a share of a million pounds is profligacy and dependency. How on earth do you think the vast majority of people manage without it? It's a ridiculous assertion - and you must realise that.

It's not a new thing that people never thought would be something that could happen here.
