That new Labour MP’s ten flats with ants and mould…

How much greater would be the outrage if it were a Tory MP?
Ten times? Fifty times?
I can’t help wondering!

The age of this thread shows that people and the media lose interest and the problem goes away.

Where is the evidence that he has put things right? Far more important, particularly for the tenants.
Jas Athwal was suspended briefly before the 2019 election, when Sam Tarry was selected instead as MP. He, you will remember was/is the boyfriend of the unlovely Angela and they spent a hard-working week together in America in 2023, no doubt planning election strategies in the apartment so thoughtfully provided by Lord Alli. Not sure if he returned to his wife or not, but he was displaced as MP by Athwal in 2024.
Such delightful people.

Yes, it's an old thread.

It was in the news last year. He was supposed to be putting things right.

Allira Tue 11-Feb-25 19:07:07

Where is the evidence nothing has been done on the flats? If so, lets see it.

Conversely, where is the evidence that the flats and the children's nurseries have been improved and are now free of mould, damp and insect infestations?

I’m not defending anything maddyone. I just want to know whether or not anything has changed since August 2024 for Labour Party MP landlords, given that there is new legislation for all landlords later this year. Mollygo implied not, and I wondered what she had heard or seen. Is that unreasonable?

(I have done very wide searches out of curiosity)

Speculating is when you think something

Knowing is when there’s no evidence that something has been done, and the culprits and the matter under consideration is still in full view. But go ahead with your defence Casdon it’s hardly a new technique.

And if they are it’s only come about as he was found out.

Just to clarify, I am asking where you have found out that the Labour Party haven’t already addressed the issue with their MPs Mollygo. Do you know that they haven’t, or are you second guessing?

If they have, they haven't publicised it except for a report that Starmer had reprimanded Athwal and told him to take his responsibilities seriously.
He still retained the Whip.

Be interesting to find out if all those flats are now hunky dory wouldn’t it?

I’m more interested in the fact that an MP who you may or may not have condemned in your previous post is still in position, still renting the properties in a poor state and that tenants are afraid of complaining.

I’m not getting involved in another circuitous argument with you. We both know what I said and what you said, it’s there for everybody to read. The bottom line is, you were speculating, without evidence, that this MP had done nothing since August, and that other MPs hadn’t either. No doubt in time the truth will out.

If the MP who is/was back then is still in position,
He is
and the flats are till in the appalling condition shown,
they are
then it’s quite reasonable to say that nothing has changed.
Second guessing doesn’t come into it.

He's had a very chequered past too, different rumours circulating about his time as a Councillor and he was briefly suspended from the Labour Party then.

Wes Streeting was his protegé, let's hope he has distanced himself from Athwal.

By the way you’re quite wrong if you think I’m defending any landlords who don’t provide accommodation of a good standard. Read my comment on 2nd September at 19.10.

Casdon Tue 11-Feb-25 17:43:49

I know that Allira. You know me though, I like comments with evidence behind them, that’s all.

Sounds a lot like a defence to me, pushing the responsibility back on to Mollygo to defend her position.
As far as I’m concerned, outright condemnation is the way to go. Including from our PM, who has actually allowed this vile man to retain The Whip.
He should be expelled from the Party, and the House.

Do you know that hasn’t happened since this thread started in August 2024 Mollygo, I’m not aware of any update about this MPs properties?

Just wondering why the indefensible is defended.
The Party cannot be criticised by some.

He got a slap on the wrist and blithely continues as an MP tweeting a couple of days ago: It’s been another busy week working hard for my neighbours across Ilford South

Presumably he's been busy with his Marigolds, Mould and Mildew Remover and Nippon.

M0nica Tue 11-Feb-25 17:22:50

It was in the paper months ago, just after the election. Here is a news item published in August reporting on this www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/aug/30/labour-mp-accused-of-renting-out-ant-infested-flats-with-black-mould

I would have expected all the repairs to have been done by now and for the flats to be in perfect condtion.

Kick him out -as an MP and as Labour party member.

How can people who profess to support the Labour party, the party that sees itself as representing the oppressed and downtrodden, have so many MPs who treat that same group with contempt whether by renting out rotten homes for large rents or speaking with graphic and vulgar terms of their constituents.

The government are doing something about this.
www.housingtoday.co.uk/news/government-announces-phased-timetable-for-awaabs-law/5134238.article

And they should start by addressing the issue of MPs (including their own) who let properties which are covered under that timetable.
The concern shown by tenants who are afraid to be identified as complaining or to have the mould in their rentals used as examples of the MP’s properties is a further matter that needs addressing quickly.
