Back by no popular demand whatsoever😄😄. Just to reiterate before I start, that most of my quotes are from the BBC or Guardian. Where they are from another source I will say, and also make it clear if I post my opinion.

Monday.

The first day of reality, for one of the oldest to one of the youngest new MPs

New politicians begin to settle down including one of the oldest, newest Labour MPs. ENT surgeon from East Anglia- Peter Prinsley – an eminent ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon.

With minimal help from Labour high command, Prinsley credits a gaggle of “indefatigable local ladies” for delivering his historic victory. He bought an old Post Office van, decorated it with photographs of himself in surgical scrubs, and spent the six-week campaign knocking on doors with the guaranteed conversation starter: “I’m Peter from the hospital.”

At 66, Prinsley is one of the older first-timers in a parliament where 335 out of 650 MPs are new. “You know, when you go to the Houses of Parliament, the most amazing thing is how young everybody looks,”
.. “You walk in there and you think: who has put the children in charge of the country?”

One of the youngest, and probably one of the “children” Prinsley was talking about is 24-year-old Josh Dean, a student who was still living at home with his mother when he became the first Labour MP for Hertford and Stortford. He was in his final year of a politics and international relations degree at the University of Westminster when the election was called and he cannot graduate until he finishes his dissertation – a comparative study of the technologies of control used in the “war on terror” and the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

I didn’t go the traditional route into parliament, or through school or through work. And I think that diversity of experience is really valuable, actually.”

It’s good that the new government has been proactive but I think too much has been talked about or promised too soon.
We should also realise that so far it’s all talk and nothing has been really done as yet.
It feels really early to be saying ‘hurray, there are no scandals or sleaze’ as well, five years to go and the Sikh MP with his array of shoddy substandard flats surely counts as a scandal.
It’s difficult to really assess how they’re doing until policies are passed in Parliament and if they work in practice.

The process to find a boss of the new border operation has already started.

Why is it relevant that the MP is Sikh? I agree that's scandalous, but I don't see that his religion is relevant.

Oreo No she hasn’t. I linked in another thread (I think about her dancing) to an interview with her in which she explains there is to be a consultation in reducing the discount back to its pre-2012 levels but not removing Right to Buy completely (in England and Wales, it’s long gone in Scotland, and I don’t know about NI.

It is just a token action taken just to placate MP’s who have large Muslim constituencies.
That’s why it’s wrong.

I don't believe it's wrong - and I don't live in a constituency with a high number of Muslim voters. You don't have to be a Muslim to see what's going on in Gaza and the West Bank.

Oreo Fri 06-Sept-24 17:55:54

The point is the government are saying that there needs to be mucho house building when for ten years in the South there has been house building in industrial quantities going on.There is little or no infrastructure built around them in many places.
GP surgeries and dentists and schools and shops and bus routes are all part and parcel of big new developments except they don’t exist in the areas I have seen some of these estates.
The Midlands and the North may well be different, posters will probably say what they see around them.
Am I saying ‘there is literally no space’? What a strange thing to say.We could build over every field in the land so that there wasn’t any green space but that would be crazy. So we don’t.
Saturation point comes when every village and town can no
longer support all the infrastructure/ amenities that need to go hand in hand with residential streets.

growstuff Fri 06-Sept-24 17:56:27

So what's stopping infrastructure from being built?

growstuff Fri 06-Sept-24 17:58:48

There is no finite, objective definition of saturation because there is absolutely no unsurmountable reason why infrastructure can't be planned and provided.

You don’t believe it’s wrong but I do.
It’s a sop thrown to Muslim constituencies and Pro Palestine supporters is all.
It’s a very tiny percentage of arms and makes no discernible difference.

But it isn’t.
All that’s being built is houses.

Right to Buy has also gone in Wales already. New council houses are now being built, and in some cases former council houses are being purchased back by councils when they go up for sale. .

Thanks.
I wish the right to buy had gone completely as Council housing will always be needed.

ronib Fri 06-Sept-24 18:22:41

Can anyone remember the social problems that were thought to exist in large council estates? The notion of a ‘sink estate’ therefore the move to mixed housing? I don’t suggest this is accurate but I am interested to see what local town planners will do if faced with demands to build the old style of large council estates.

There is no hmm about it, simply pinpoints the relevant MP.

Oreo, you’re criticising the LP so you can expect to be jumped on.

Next time just put Jas Athwal. His religion shouldn’t be relative unless it is being used to point out that he isn’t living up to the 3 primary points by renting out substandard flats.

Criticisms of wrongdoing by those claiming to be Christians often appear on social media.

As to councils buying back , I asked them to buy back my Mums' flat and they said they were too broke to do so.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 06-Sept-24 21:33:16

That’s the trouble you see halfpint. The property will have gone up in price.
