Will Huw Edwards get a custodial sentence?

Today is the day Huw Edwards will learn his fate.

It’s an interesting one, in our local newspaper men have received fines and community orders for similar offences.

I wonder if they will make an example of Huw, I cannot imagine he would have an easy time in prison and although people would argue he didn’t physically abuse any children the distribution of these images in itself is abuse.

I really couldn’t call this one.

Definition of presiding - to be in charge or control.

You quote BBC in your second post

he announced the death of our Queen Elizabeth and presided over the funeral, while hiding his dirty little secret that the BBC new about!. That is so shocking.

He did not preside over the Queens funeral

I knew a man in his thirties who was jailed for possessing indecent images of children. The repercussions following the sentence were immense; he lost his home, his job and his marriage; social services insisted his wife divorce him otherwise they would take their children into care. The punishment was just; although his dysfunctional childhood and upbringing could have been taken into consideration. I hope Huw Edwards receives similar and the plea of mental health issues is not used as mitigation.
Good the bloke deserved all he got.
I am not excusing him (the bloke); he received a custodial sentence and he has ruined his life; is that not sufficient?
you sound like a complete do- gooder 😩
To be charitable. I think you misread my post.

Would we class all involved as equally criminal?
Those who watch, those who film, and all the others involved in the process?

A minimum of five years, maybe, for the "least bad", if there is any distinction?

Ten years, perhaps?

They are all as bad as each other

Images on the web - cross international boundaries. There are dedicated organisations across international boundaries taking them down.
Actual % people deliberately accessing them - could find no figures. Also allusions to AI generated images on the increase.

How many people would you estimate are involved at any level - is it 1 in 10,000, 1 in 1000, 1 in 100? I’ve got no feel for the numbers.

I'd think it would be way, way more than that.
Based on nothing other than an interest in crime.
I suspect even the police would have hard job estimating.

Iam64 Wed 18-Sept-24 13:35:06

I wonder if the nspcc or police protection units have an estimate
I know it’s much higher than people who haven’t worked in this grim field would suspect.

Have to build more prisons first

petra Wed 18-Sept-24 13:14:53

Nope, still voting for All of those involved to be sent to Siberia.

And yes, I know there are sentencing guidelines etc, but it's high time these were changed. They need to get some of us GNetters handing down the sentences!

I’ve already said I agree about sentencing guidelines needing changes for quite a few crimes, but MissAdventure raises a very good question above.

Any offers?

I know this is from the Daily Mail, but it does show just how leniently similar cases have been treated by the courts:

To add to RosiesMaw2 list above - what about the sentences handed down to the members of just Stop Oil recently.? The co-founder got 5 years and the others 4 years prison sentences. I call those sentences outrageous and appalling.

Can I just ask what the sentences for JSO protesters have to do with HE's sentence? Also, how would it make HE's sentence any more acceptable if they had got a fine instead of a custodial sentence?

What would you feel if you were driving a loved one to hospital and they died as a result of a road closure? Can it be fair to differentiate between acts that cause death like that, and the same acts that just turn out differently by luck?

Nothing except that the sentences are inequitable.

Roads can be closed for a variety of reasons, not JSO.

I remember several years ago now, when the M25 was clogged but cars were still being directed onto it because the authorities did not want the nearby towns and villages etc to be clogged up also. A friend was caught up in that - several hours before the traffic was cleared - and she said that there were helicopters circling in case anyone was in dire need of being taken to hospital. Doubtless there were many seriously people stuck in cars on the motorway, maybe some of whom died. Does anyone blame the cause of the jams on whoever caused them? Obviously one reason was the volume of traffic. All those people coming back from a bank holiday weekend perhaps?

Huw Edwards is an arrogant individual and a very lucky man to be sleeping in his own bed.

One aspect of this that makes me really angry is how he blames his mental illness on his offending.
There are many thousands of mentally ill people who do not break the law, it just adds to the stigma of mental illness.

Well said. He had the money to get the best therapy going for his “mental illness” as he puts it- no he was arrogant, & thought he would never get caught, but decides to hide behind the MH card.

Mt61 Wed 18-Sept-24 10:49:09

Easybee try telling that to my nephew who was molested by a dirty old bastard, aged 7 & is now an alcoholic & drug addict, with anger issues, his mother, (my sister) couldn’t live with herself when she found out & committed suicide- so 6 months suspended doesn’t wash with me & it won’t deter others, only encourage them as they know he’s got away it. Had I have known about about my nephews abuse, I would be doing time now.

Anniebach Wed 18-Sept-24 10:47:36

Like physical illness, many different mental illnesses

Am I correct in that if you do not pay your TV License you can be jailed?

Those who view and pay for paedophilic pictures and/or videos are given what basically amounts to a slap on the wrist.

It doesn’t sit right with me.

No you can’t be jailed for having no tv licence but you can be fined for watching or recording live tv- if caught, if you don’t pay the fine, then you can be jailed
