Will Huw Edwards get a custodial sentence?

Today is the day Huw Edwards will learn his fate.

It’s an interesting one, in our local newspaper men have received fines and community orders for similar offences.

I wonder if they will make an example of Huw, I cannot imagine he would have an easy time in prison and although people would argue he didn’t physically abuse any children the distribution of these images in itself is abuse.

I really couldn’t call this one.

This case started in the mags court. The Magistrate considered the case and concluded it didn’t need to be transferred to the county court because the mags had appropriate sentencing powers

"For clarity, the Huw Edwards sentence cannot be reviewed under the Unduly Lenient Sentencing Scheme as it's only applicable for certain Crown Court sentences. I have lobbied for years to make it more accessible," Ms Waxman said on X.

I believe his case was heard in a Magistrates' court.
I wonder who arranged that?

If you are implying what I think you are, you are dangerously close to libel with your last sentence eazybee.

Well he says he's a spokesman for the left, but....that doesn't make him one!

That's why I said 'self-styled spokesman'.

Owen Jones has nothing to do with the DM, fancythat. Far from it. He is a self-styled spokesman for the left, misogynist and smug know-all. Sorry if I’ve missed the point and you are aware of that grin

Iam64 Sat 21-Sept-24 13:43:51

Owen Jones is a loathsome individual

Its fascinating that one of the first reactions to the initial story about Hugh Edwards was condemnation of The Sun who broke the story.
Owen Jones was vocal in his criticism of the 'disgusting rag' A handy reminder that whatever opinion Owen holds you know you will be right if you take the opposite one.

I so so wish people, of the "Daily Mail? Dont believe a thing of what that paper says" ilk, were not quite so quick to dismiss everything. Regardless.

Or is it the age old problem of, one person's word against another.
No witnesses.
A case cannot be made and brought before the courts.

Look at the Al Fayed case. People are unwilling to believe women over men. It’s as simple as that, really.

One obvious difficulty is the need for independent evidence in support of prosecutions. It’s something Judges are compelled to advise the jury of, reminding them it’s the word of this child (or woman) against the accused. We still live in a society where many find it difficult to believe the respectable man in the dock could possibly have done what he’s accused of. Prosecutions are rare. Successful prosecutions? I’ll ask Google but i can think of too many children who weren’t believed

Galaxy Thu 19-Sept-24 21:41:45

The only way to have any influence on VAWG (and yes I agree that includes all children) is to increase sentences and improve prosecution rates. The rest of it - misogyny as a hate crime, etc etc is absolutely pointless.

Allira Thu 19-Sept-24 19:52:01

I agree, Iam64

As a matter of urgency.

Iam64 Thu 19-Sept-24 19:51:10

My view is there needs to be a review of sentencing guidelines for sexual abuse of children
Starmer rightly identified violence against women and girls as a national emergency. Surely child sexual abuse of children (including boys) should be part of whatever reviews
are proposed

Yes, thank you MisInterpreted , and there are other channels too,

MissInterpreted Thu 19-Sept-24 11:05:08

I understood what you meant, Anniebach. To me, someone presiding over a funeral would be the person actually conducting the funeral service, not someone presenting coverage of that funeral on tv.
