It ends tomorrow.

Rachel Reeves is just standing up now (noon) to deliver her speech.

There was ‘booing’ from the audience earlier about non discussion of the WFA.

They can ignore their membership, as the Conservatives do; the unions, not so much.

A quote from Suzanne Moore who attended the Labour Conference. Sheas thinking about new Labour back-benchers: "Does anyone really become a Labour MP to cut the winter fuel allowance?"

Ouch.

She is quite correct.
The conference voted to keep the winter fuel allowance, even though the leadership moved the vote to after a lot of people had already left.
Starmer and Reeves can just ignore the membership and the unions though.

A quote in the Telegraph!

Despite my support for Israel, and my complete amazement when I first heard Starmer say sausages, later on as we sat in bed, listening to the news again, and we heard the gaffe again, we both did burst out laughing, because although it’s a serious subject, it was funny.
Sometimes the most inappropriate things are funny. There’s no need for anyone to be offended by it. It’s not as if he meant to say it. I doubt he’ll ever live it down though.

The West supports Israel so stop blaming KS.
No potential genocide in Lebanon and if Hezbollah stopped with the rockets fired daily a peace deal may be able to be fixed.
Blame the real aggressor, Hezbollah. But I doubt that you will.

Absolutely.
The real criminals are all terrorists. Hamas, Houthis, Hezbohall, take your pick which side you’d like to support.
I’ll stick with supporting Israel and hope for the release of the hostages.

Starmer became PM in July yet according to many angry posters he’s responsible for every ill in the country.
As for the war in Gaza , the Labour Party supported the previous governments line in supporting Israel’s right to self defence. Starmer, like other leaders, is calling for an immediate cease fire. What is happening there and the spread into the Lebanon is beyond description and of course we all want peace. Interesting that Israel is held totally responsible by many and Hezbollah seen as freedom fighters

I put the blame where it belongs, firmly with Hamas, however I think the Palestinians in general have had a raw deal and that the PM of Israel is a power mad megalomaniac.

I feel so sorry for the innocents caught up in this on both sides.

I too pray for a full ceasefire.

Starmer supported the collective punishment of Gaza by Israel, something deemed illegal under Art33 of the Geneva convention. Cutting off power and water is a war crime, so sausages would be luxury.
Meanwhile there is another potential genocide beginning in Lebanon.

It’s important to look at the content of his speech, so you can measure the progress towards the outcomes.
Like Iam64, I have read it on line. It actually comes over better written, because to me, he sounds insincere -but that’s true of many politicians, but just Starmer.

eazybee Wed 25-Sept-24 07:35:39

^^ Some of us want to look at the content of his speech.

Well, that won't take you long.

Allsorts Wed 25-Sept-24 07:34:53

Everyone want things to be better in this country and people voted for change" This period is unsettling but it won't be wasted as lessons will be learned. Nothing lasts and it all passes. It's the youngsters test I'm concerned about after tge tough years with Covid, at least I'd had my life and freedom and jobs. So much harder nowI would hate to be starting out in this political climate but I'm looking at things from my experiences of the good times although there were the bad times too, I hope very much things improve and the young are able to get a better future, that the NHS continues as it's brilliant, that all these wars everywhere stop but it's out of my control down to those in control.

Iam64 Wed 25-Sept-24 05:38:10

Never mind MissA, not everyone wants to focus on a word scramble. Some of us want to look at the content of his speech. I’m away so no tv or radio. I’ve read three news papers on line. I’m ok with Starmer.

mae13 Wed 25-Sept-24 04:00:30

Thanks Sir Sausages - a Chatbot wrote that speech, eh?

The usual Jam Tommorrow bunch of fibs.

All this jamboree conference did was confirm politicians loathe pensioners and Benefit claimants are in for another pasting on the premise that even to apply for any benefit makes one a 'scrounger'.

It also proved that we have a PM who doesn't know the difference between a political hostage and a sausage. Give me strength.

It's not as if the man made a bloody joke!!!!
No doubt he is mortified.

Honestly...

Well I doubt return of the sausages will be the most remembered thing he said but I did wonder what was going on in his head when he said it. People makes unfortunate gaffes but what on earth……..

Oh I think this sausage gaff will be with him until the end of his days.

Got to feel a bit sorry for his children. They'll be seeing the social media comments and clips about him.

Go look on toktok.

Can't warm to Starmer, remember how he sat in the fence during Covid. Unfortunately Angela and Rachel not an asset either. Let's hope this awful start and the reaction to it will make them rethink a few things. No one will forget the captive sausages though.

Pippa22 Tue 24-Sept-24 21:54:13

Rachel Reeves has a really lovely new haircut. I think that’s about all that I can say that’s positive about her and I wonder who paid the hairdresser.
She seems rather smug and really happy delivering her piece and obviously enjoys being number one as she thinks she is and seems to be. At least she is a much more interesting speaker than boring Starmer who even still manages to look boring even with his new expensive suits and glasses.

merlotgran Tue 24-Sept-24 20:40:58

I'm not sure I can see anything funny about the plight of the Israeli hostages in Gaza

Neither can I.

Hungry?
Skipped Breakfast??
I remember during Brexit a politician, I think was David Davis, could be wrong, anyway, he said 'that breakfast means breakfast' instead of Brexit of course.
They need to keep an energy bar in their pockets.

^I think the return of the sausages will be the most talked about comment.^

He’s probably been getting tips from Joe Biden. 😂

Unfortunate gaffe seeing as his wife is Jewish.

I'm not sure I can see anything funny about the plight of the Israeli hostages in Gaza, then connecting it with his wife being Jewish, despite the blip aspect

I'm trying to dig out a speech summary, as it does describe the plans ahead.
