Who will be our next Conservative leader? Who is right for the job?

It’s the Conservative Party conference this week - we seem to have heard very little of it in the media - yet they are choosing the next opposition leader.

Jenrick, Badenhoch, Cleverly and Tugendhat:

What kind of Conservative Party will we see?

Here are the candidates:

Latest poll result. My guess is the final two will be Jenrick and Cleverly.

Allsorts

Liz Truss is a disgrace and dillusional.,Cant some other party have her please.

... well, she might be a good fit for the Reform party (or is it still a company?), but - its first MP, Lee Anderson, once told a woman during a heated conversation to "keep out of Big-Boy politics"... so there would be a clash of personalities.
grin

However, when she spoke at the Tory party conference - the auditorium was packed, so she still has a lot of support.

... and, she's on a mission! She explained during a quizzing by Tim Stanley from The Telegraph that she wanted to save "not just Britain but Western civilization". wink

So don't write her off just yet!

Kemibad enoch is a complete racist a disgrace to her heritage and colour. In the so called good old days of the UK she would have not been allowed as a girl guide leader. Worse still does she genuinely believe in those racist views or is it for a specific “nasty” audience.
Does she believe in traditional British values if kindness, generosity and fairness. I think not.
Conservatism is a discredited philosophy and the move towards fascism is really scary and I am fearful of my grandchildren.
Although we do try and teach them good correct moral values. Not the nasty party ones.

Oh dear me.

The Reform Party split the Tory vote in my marginal constituency (red wall). Our new Labour MP is good thankfully.
I hope the tories can re-build as Labour did after the electorate clearly rejected what it saw as extreme views. We need a strong, decent opposition. We do not need Kemi as its leader. She’s after the Reform voters

Tugendhat. He’s a solid politician and has a background in the military.

ronib Tue 01-Oct-24 08:03:44

The problems facing Conservatives are going to continue. The Reform Party will be the main beneficiary I am thinking. Not sure what to say about that.

Personally, I wouldn't vote for any of them. The party needs some new blood with a fresh approach to this country's problems.

vegansrock Tue 01-Oct-24 06:12:47

If I was a Tory I’d favour Tugenhadt. If I was a Labour supporter I’d hope Badenoch would win.

Polling shows TT is best liked by the public but it's pretty obvious the Tory grassroots will go for KB if she gets onto the ballot. After all, they gave us Truss and we all know how that turned out.

Truss was also favoured by the grassroots, too. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is KB.

It will be the electorate who will get them back in government though so maybe they should focus on a leader who is popular among it. However, KB appears to be popular on GN.

Who knows! It's interesting.

I was really disappointed to hear Tugenhadt’s comment about the ECHR as previously he would have been my favoured candidate. Keli Badenoch is too far to the right as her recent remarks about maternity leave show. Jenrick is now under scrutiny about political donations made to him. Earlier in the decade he was mired in a number of planning scandals when he was housing minister. That leaves Cleverley by default.
I must add, I am not a Conservative voter but think a stronge opposition is important.

Apparently, according to Larry the Cat’s Twitter feed, if Kemi Badenoch wins the Tory leadership election all Labour MPs will be required to register it as a giftwinkgrin

Tugenhadt ‘s talk about abandoning the ECHR worries , otherwise he’s my top candidate.

Same here.

I believe it's only Belarus and Russia (expelled) who aren't signed up - all the other... what, 45 / 46?... European countries are. That, alone, makes me feel uncomfortable.

The ECHR protects the rights of those with disabilities. We might think those rights are protected by legislation here in the UK and that we don't need such safeguarding from this body - but who knows what a future government might do?

... it's about more than Rwanda and immigrants, or is a future Tory government going to be as fixated on this issue as the last one... and seek popularity among the electorate that way?

Casdon Mon 30-Sept-24 21:19:10

Does anybody know whether Suella Braverman is backing any of the candidates, or if she is at the conference? I’ve heard nothing from or about her at all yet, which is surprising.

"Tugendhat warns against Tories becoming Reform UK".
Very different message from Badenhoch in comparison between the two -
www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2k9385xn7o

Warming to Tugendhat, I think he wants to rebuild something that is not "Reform lite"

Cleverly and Jenrick still too speak.

ronib Mon 30-Sept-24 19:56:55

Monica it was a very long time ago but I think he interpreted it to mean that we would no longer be an independent country.

My husband thought it was a mistake to join the EU in the first place. He would argue that we were misled then.

In what way?

I think it’s safe to say Kemi Badenoch is a tact free zone.

That really was not a waste thing to say.

Quite!

And Truss. A Trump victory would, apparently, cheer her up.

Turning to the Conservative Party leadership, Liz Truss declined the opportunity to endorse any one of the candidates.

... an endorsement some of them, or all of them, might be relieved not to have.

She is of course still blaming the BoE and OBR for her failed tenure as PM.

She was welcomed to the theatre with scores of phones being lifted to take pictures - and her attacks on Sir Keir Starmer, Mr Sunak and "the establishment" were all met warmly.

Unlike Truss - Sunak did at least take full responsibility for not "delivering".

She's still the darling woman though to many, many of the party. And she definitely admires her own chutzpah.

Thank you for that link Casdon as its an ongoing record of events at the conference. It was an eye catching headliner but imo pretty gruesome.
