Who will be our next Conservative leader? Who is right for the job?

It’s the Conservative Party conference this week - we seem to have heard very little of it in the media - yet they are choosing the next opposition leader.

Jenrick, Badenhoch, Cleverly and Tugendhat:

What kind of Conservative Party will we see?

Here are the candidates:

Excuse the typos. 'from' & 'memoir'. I was laughing too much..

MayBee70 Tue 08-Oct-24 23:50:35

You mean the media’s portrayal of the Labour Party? Hate to break this to you but they’re here for 5 years. Probably longer if the Conservative Party doesn’t begin to remember what their core values used to be.

MaizieD Tue 08-Oct-24 23:49:40

I'm afraid that if anyone thinks the're going to get the truth fron Johnson in his 'memior' then I have a bridge to sell them..

I had to laugh at his latest interview gem today. Apparently he claimed that when he and his then mistress took over the flat at No 11 Downing St it was 'like a crack den'. The previous occupant was Theresa May😂

I do recall his reported comments at the time about it being full of John Lewis furniture. Crack dens must have gone up in the world...

They’re taking their time, aren’t they? So different to here where it would have been announced straight after or very soon after the election. Hopefully they are giving it deep thought because whoever it turns out needs to stay in the job for a while. Might not be too long before they are ‘back’ by the looks of the Labour Party at the moment !

BevSec Tue 08-Oct-24 23:15:09

Maybee70,
I feel he is right, especially if they had joined in with Reform. Their refusal to do so has cost them the election.

BevSec Tue 08-Oct-24 23:13:52

Wyllow3, you are right, there are so many paywalls, I do read what I can through the library app, which is free. The Guardian and .daily mail are both there, as is the Telegraph.

MayBee70 Tue 08-Oct-24 23:00:54

Johnson is now saying that, if he still led the party they would have won the election. Completely forgetting that he was thrown out of the party.

Wyllow3 Tue 08-Oct-24 22:59:41

Thank you for reading, today if you look at the whole newsfeed there's plenty of criticism of the left. I do read what I can but so many paywalls now, but Sky news and Yahoo are paywall free.

BevSec Tue 08-Oct-24 22:39:17

Wyllow3, thank you for the link. I did have a read of it, although I really dislike the Guardian as it seems so skewed, .I expect people who do read it feel much the same about the Daily Mail. I feel the Guardian would be against BJ regardless of the actual truth. I suppose we all read those newspapers which confirm our views.

‘Jimmy Dimly’ would seem to be the best bet out of a very uninspiring line-up.

kittylester Tue 08-Oct-24 19:45:07

I wanted Tom Tugendhat but feel he isn't dynamic enough so now want Cleverley.

LadyGracie Tue 08-Oct-24 16:30:49

I wanted Tom, by far talks the most sense.

From Sky News:
Tom Tugendhat has been eliminated from the Tory leadership race.
Of the four candidates he received 20 votes, putting him in last place and knocking him out of the contest.
James Cleverly received the backing of 39 MPs, Robert Jenrick got 31 and Kemi Badenoch had 30.

Well.....thats more than interesting. Yes, it's sad about Tugendhat, but Cleverlys backing seems to follow his success at Conference....who will go, Jenrick or Badenhoch?

Whatever the party members think, its seems that MP's want the "known quality"and most centrist candidate.

Will Tugendhat's share will go to Cleverly? (ie, towards centrist).

btw, re fair reviews of BJ's book, this Yahoo article actually gives links summarising most of the different reviews from different newspapers.

uk.news.yahoo.com/boris-johnson-memoir-critics-say-094030103.html

includes the Telegraph etc as well as the serious one in the Guardian

I particularly liked Amber Rudd's review, especially this.
"I still don’t know which side of Boris is the real him. The Boris who had a serious brush with death during Covid, or the Boris who considered invading Holland to steal back our vaccines? I’m inclined to believe there is no real Boris – that he has merely become a performance of himself, fully believing he’s the main character and hero in every tale."

When we spoke in the run up to the referendum to a group of Conservatives they said that the problem with the party was that it was dominated by people who were basically journalists. At the time I assume they were referring to Gove but Johnson fits into that category too. And just because Johnson talks posh, uses long words and Latin phrases doesn’t imo, make him intelligent. That Sky News interviewer was brilliant; I hadn’t realised he was David Frosts son. I wonder if his book refers to Nazanin Ratcliffe: another thing I’ll never forgive him for.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 08-Oct-24 15:39:29

Oh dear, I think it’s Cleverly’s to lose now.

I wanted Tom T.

I’d be very surprised if members voted for Badenoch or Cleverley, Jenrick is the most likely, opinions at conference is not representative of members a whole.

Oreo hope not -

If the membership had to choose between Cleverly and Badenoch then they’d choose her I bet.

Doodledog, I have read extracts and it reads well, BJ is highly intelligent and I am looking forward to reading the whole book, its funny and hopefully sets the record straight on some of the rumours at the time which some swallowed whole! I expect the Guardian has written a piss take which is only to be expected of that particular dreadful publication.

Have you actually read much in the Guardian, BevSec?
Just this morning looking something up I checked out their regular news feed:

www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2024/oct/08/labour-keir-starmer-tory-leadership-latest-politics-live-news

look at the range of cover and realise that they are pretty even handed.

Wyllow3 Tue 08-Oct-24 13:34:43

ConservativeHome survey reported this morning:

"Jenrick sabotaged his Tory leadership chances at conference, survey of members suggests, with Cleverly rising fast

Conservative members were more likely to be turned off by what they saw of Robert Jenrick at the party conference than impressed, a survey suggests.

Jenrick arrived at the conference as the clear bookmakers’ favourite. But, according to a ConservativeHome survey of Tory members, only 23% of them said that what happened at conference made them more likely to support him – and 43% said they were less likely to support him afterwards.

Tom Tugendhat experienced a similar loss of support – but he is expected to be out of the contest by the end of today anyway as the candidate most likely to be eliminated in today’s ballot of MPs.

Conservative members favour Kemi Badenoch for next leader, according to numerous ConHome surveys, and proper polling, but 35% of respondents said conference made them less likely to support her, while 30% said the opposite.

The survey suggests the big winner was James Cleverly. Some 55% of Tories said conference made him a more attractive candidate, while only 14% said it didn’t"

BevSec, I agree that Alexander Boris Johnson is of high intelligence. Is that the same as truthful, honest, having a moral compass and such? Possibly these are different qualities.
I would suggest, respectfully, that it was not his intellect that led to his downfall.
Will his memoirs " set the record straight", or will they be self promotion?
I wonder....

None of the above.

so so true.
