The BBC News webpage after midnight: war, conflict, explosions, Channel crossing deaths, Donald Trump with his de-ranged ally Elon Musk.

That's it.

Nothing remotely positive, nothing to suggest hope.

It is all a bit depressing though, somewhat scary (Russia/Ukraine, Israel/Gaza, our economy, life in general)

Some days I just utterly refuse to read or watch the news!

Then again I’m a curious (nosy) person who like to know what’s going on in the world.

What to do! 🙄

This is me. The news is depressing but I like to know what’s going on. I watch/listen to BBC news rather than read it.
I’ve just heard the results of a YouGov poll, which has apparently found that 9% of 18-24 year olds in Britain favour and have sympathy for Hamas. I think they’re a murdering band of ………. so clearly I’m out of touch.
I’ve decided to listen to the news and then do what my husband does; put it out of mind because there’s nothing I can do about any of it.

GB News readers and viewers have just raised nearly £200,000 for Friends of The Elderly as their way of supporting pensioners who have lost their WFA.

Their presenter Patrick Christys kicked off the campaign and it went mad.

I don’t think any other News channel has done anything like this. I say Well done to all concerned.

I like no-nonsense Patrick- some great presenters on GB news 👍🏻

I find channel 4 news has some integrity.
And I actually find it quite interesting.
Maybe it’s the way they report it.

Channel 4 is the best of the bunch, Krishnan Guru-Murthy is an excellent presenter.

The world is in a really awful state especially the Middle East and Ukraine, plus the rise of the Right wing ,the awful prospect of Trump winning the election in the US and the cost of living crisis here.I have come off Twitter because of Elon Musk deluging it with racist tweets and generally stirring the pot.I am much more relaxed and less anxious .Apparently the UK. take up of Twitter has plummeted.

annma I recently deleted my X app because of the appalling misinformation on there, Elon Musk’s claim that he supports free speech is a myth and 70% of the content on X now is misinformation.

I signed up to the Good News Network: www.goodnewsnetwork.org/

They e-mail me a selection of good news stories every day and I love it. Restores my faith in human nature and counteracts the negativity bias in mainstream news.

Good "x" news there. Never been there, never will.

I think we are deluged with news because of new technologies, and agree with limiting it.

BBC news - like the other main media outlets gives pro Israeli coverage. The current main stories are about the Israeli hostages families and pictures of the Israeli hostages. No mention of the thousands of Palestinians held hostage for years or the ones thrown out of their homes and forced to live in refugee camps for over 76 years. Headlines refer to Biden working towards peace when he has just agreed to billions more weapons. The main UK papers similarly have stories in the weekend magazines focusing on the plight of Israelis. There is no mention of the pro Palestinian marches and the huge numbers of different Jewish and other faith organisations who participate.

(Just to be accurate - on the front page of BBC I player under Middle Eastern section brummie it very includes the impact in Gaza and Lebanon)
www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/c2vdnvdg6xxt

check out the whole page -

but it is a very particular day today and I would expect what we've seen - generally the coverage is even handed on I player news)

Negative news sells better - more audience, more newspapers sold, more advertising revenue, unfortunately. It's the modern version of 'orrible murder, read orl abart it'. I recall there was one TV newsreader who pushed for positive news but it didn't last.

LaCrepescule Mon 07-Oct-24 15:38:33

There have always been terrible things going on in the world but the problem is that nowadays we’re so exposed to it.
You don’t have to consume news so limit your exposure and certainly don’t look last thing before bed.
There’s nothing you can do about it so limit yourself to being involved where you can make a difference, closer to home.

A friend of mine has stopped listening/watching the news and talking about it as she says it’s too depressing. This applies to all news channels.

Dilys Mon 07-Oct-24 14:52:47

I was told many years ago that the time to be really concerned about the news was when Good News was so rare that it had to be the headlines and main content every bulletin

All this stuff has been going on for centuries but is now constantly in your face; the internet, rolling news, fake news - you name it. Not healthy. Keep News to a smaller part of your life.

It’s easy to get disheartened because news headlines tend to focus more on all the dreadful things going on in the world rather than the good things.

It’s important not to hide away from the grim things going on, of course, and we need to know about them so that hopefully, we as a species, can work towards stopping them, but equally it’s important to recognise and give time, thought and celebration to all the good things happening in this world of ours, too.

The balance seems to tip more towards negative things, but as individuals, we need to try to realise that this is what news reporting generally does and think of all the positive things going on around us as well as the negative, or we run the risk of getting bogged down into a spiral of doom and gloom ourselves. We have to continue to hope.

Romola Mon 07-Oct-24 13:20:55

I'm finding all the news about the middle east and Ukraine so upsetting. I don't watch the news after 6 in the evening.
And during the day it's mainly Radio 3. Thank you Johann Sebastian, Wolfgang, Ludwig, Franz and all the others who make sense of our human condition.

knspol Mon 07-Oct-24 12:34:18

Perhaps best not to look at the news at that time of night if you want a peaceful rest?

Part of the BBC front page showing range.

One of the benefits of the BBC website is that if you are following one major story and click on it, then other relevant news items come up on the subject including - peace initiatives, in depth checks, alternative news, and so on.

Wyllow3 Sun 06-Oct-24 11:55:07

Just checked it out too loads more. There's a myriad of different stories when you go onto the site in detail.

In terms of headlines it reflects what is in todays papers - I really don't know what you expect.

Perhaps you can point to an alternative major news site thats accessible and what you'd like mae?

NotSpaghetti Sun 06-Oct-24 04:42:40

Just been to look. Mine has some of those but also an immunotherapy success story, an article on the 100 weddings on the same day, Tunisia's presidential race, an article about VAT on public school fees -

What were you looking for?

NotSpaghetti Sun 06-Oct-24 04:31:23

Sorry, what do you mean?
I'm confused.

nanna8 Sun 06-Oct-24 03:09:29

Report it please, you know you want to!
