Lidia Thorpe shouted about the odds for Aboriginal peoples, for the moment. Apparently, she has cultivated an attention seeking habit of all things Australian over the years. Silly woman. Me, me, me look at me!

If she’d have refused to take the oath she would have been barred from parliament, so people can take the oath and not believe a word of it. Not sure why it’s necessary in this day and age - could just say something like I’ll do my best for the country . Why swear allegiance to some foreigner?

some foreigner?

😂😂😂
Australia is a Constitutional Monarchy and the Monarch is the Head of State.

As a Senator, Lidia Thorpe knows perfectly well how the Australian Parliament works and how to try to bring about change.

foreigner I don't think of Australians as foreigners. I suppose they are.

It sounds like she regrets her actions. If she felt that strongly, perhaps she should have been barred from parliament as those are the rules she agreed to and insincerity doesn't build trust or self respect.

Yes, she has shown herself to be insincere, lacking in integrity and yes insolent. Not someone I would trust. Such a shame as she could have been so much more effective for her people if she had been eloquent, persuasive, a real lady with good manners and poise.

Ridiculous. Strange how she's saying that now, but didn't say it when our Queen was alive. What a coward and I think she's twisting the truth.

She behaved like an insolent teenager in front of the head teacher when she was taking the oath.

If she had any shred of integrity and belief in her own principles she should have refused to take it.

'While she may have spoken this way during the ceremony, Senator Thorpe would also have signed a written oath that clearly stated “heirs”.'

Anniebach Sat 26-Oct-24 23:37:18

She lied on oath

She says she swore allegiance to Queen Elizabeth and her hairs.

Actually, she read the words from the card so, if she can't read or speak properly, she still swore allegiance to HM's heirs.

Free speech she had every right as western liberal democrats keep saying.

Allira Sat 26-Oct-24 12:29:49

To put it bluntly in Australian terms - "just bring a bl**dy Bill before Parliament, Lidia, calling for another referendum, but"

White settlers in Australia used to hunt and kill aboriginals for fun.

Caleo: "Allira, are you saying Australian aboriginal people get concessions like hunting animals to death?

Instead of such sops to keep them quiet, indigenous peoples should be enriched as to education, health care, housing, and other civilised freedoms so as to raise them to the same level of affluence as everyone else."

Yes, they are "allowed" to hunt and kill animals. And your comments about raising them to the same level of civilised freedoms and affluence as everyone else is EXACTLY what our forbears thought they should do. They went about it in an appalling way. How can Aborigines be compensated for the awful way the English treated them? They've had an apology, they have opportunities for education, health and housing, but some don't/won't take advantage of it. They don't want the trappings of the invaders, but bear a grudge and want...well, I don't know what they want.
However many first nation people have accepted and adapted to European life and done very well,

Poor diet and alcoholism are signs of poverty, but it is a chosen way of life. If they wish they can have the diet they choose (hunting & gathering) but they accept the benefits offered and choose to live in poverty.

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Oct-24 14:45:16

To be able to choose an indigenous way of life or have strong elements of it in your life, you do have to have access to knowledge about it.

As its part of the whole countries heritage - and people can learn from it as regards the natural world and our connections to it - thats why I suggested it be part of school curriculum for all.

Caleo Fri 25-Oct-24 14:28:08

If the day comes when any citizen can declare " I am aboriginal and claim my aboriginal rights " then aboriginal people will be on the same economic level as everyone else.

Caleo Fri 25-Oct-24 14:23:35

In a democratic country such as Oz there is universal suffrage . Democracy in order to work as intended needs an educated electorate.

Within the above criteria the Aboriginal people can vote for a party that enriches them , or alternatively a party that supports old traditions.
If people believe old traditions matter more to them than participation in the best that Oz has to offer, then that is that democratic choice.

Far more Aussies dislike their own politicians than the Royal family, not many have a good word for Albo.

Jaberwok Fri 25-Oct-24 11:41:36

Not much chance of that happening here in the UK either!!! What you see is genuinely what you get, and at the moment it is all good.😀🤴👸

Allira Fri 25-Oct-24 11:27:21

It's the thought of Australians being dragged out on to the streets and being made to applaud and wave flags for the King that made me laugh. I'm thinking that paddyann has never been to Australia.
Just ludicrous 😂

Jaberwok Fri 25-Oct-24 11:14:30

No they're not! Why is it Paddyann that you always have to use vulgar unpleasant language when referring to the RF? It's not only untrue and unpleasant, but even if it were true surely you are intelligent enough to articulate your feelings without resorting to gutter insults? Sadly, presumably for you, a lot of people are very supportive of the RF particularly the King, and yes, big shock (!) the Queen, both here and abroad, not surprising really when compared to politicians of most nations including Scotland.

Ah but were they taken out to “welcome the king and queen” as happens even here when young school children are escorted onto the streets with union jacks to wave…..indoctrination from an early age .Thank goodness more people every year can see past this relic of the Middle Ages and realise they are nothing but parasites on a publicity tour to keep the cash flowing into their coffers! I have to laugh when there’s this reverence towards a woman who many hated with a. Vengeance when she was plain Camilla Parker Bowles ..titles mean nothing except to the deluded ,or those fed propaganda with their mothers milk

As I said in an earlier post, DD saw the Royals in Canberra. Couldn’t get near the front, but managed to see them. Crowds of people of different ages and cultures, but all thrilled to see them.

All Aussies aren’t keen on a republic, despite what you hear.

Allira Thu 24-Oct-24 22:54:56

taken out to welcome the king and queen

Who were? All those Australians out on the streets greeting Charles and Camilla? If you've ever met any, you'll know they have minds of their own and that really makes it a very funny remark!
😂😂😂

taken out 😂
