Governments First Budget

We won’t know too much until we can read tomorrows analysis , but we do know of this government’s intended direction of travel, and whether it meets with our expectations as voters and what we all voted for, which of course changes with each individual.

My vote and expectation was for

First and foremost to save our NHS and crumbling public services.

Second was to address the state of our environment, the polluted seas and rivers, and the lack of diversity.

Next -to address the fact that economic growth has been more or less stagnant since 2010. We need a Keynesian type budget for growth, that is imaginative and forward thinking to produce the revenue to invest in out country.

Personally I have never thought it possible to have this type of successful economy where citizens can be confident of a cradle to grave welfare state, where education is first class, health is free at the point of use and available within a very reasonable time limit, where public services are well run and invested in and care for all in need comes as a right, can be obtained by the tax payer on the cheap. This type of economy must be paid for and we will need to see tax at Scandinavian levels in order to achieve this.

Looking at the state the country is in, we knew in July that this would be a mighty task. Mighty tasks need research/planning and massive effort. They always start painfully slowly but momentum will gather as each year passes and we will gradually see the result of the effort put in to save our country from the ravages of 14 long years of economic blows our public services received.

Of course the right wing media - childlike - is insisting on jam today without spending any of their pocket money, but as wise parents we know that all jam does is rot your teeth. Instant gratification is only for the hard of thinking, the more intelligent know that time is the master.

So now looking back at the few short months Labour has been in government, i am pretty supportive of the direction of travel, and the achievements to date - which probably need listing to remind everyone - but not for this thread.

Some stuff has been announced but I think it best until we begin to see how it fits into the overall picture before we begin to comment.

It looks as if this is going to be a massive budget though - so hold onto your hats!

I'm talking about them stopping right to buy

TakeThat7 Wed 30-Oct-24 18:52:12

It was the one possibility for a better life you can't change who you are or get off minimum wage of that's the only work you can get Ove attempted to end my life before seriously what is there to live for

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 30-Oct-24 18:49:35

I didn’t vote for Labour. But I sincerely hope they Do Well in their turn of office. They have some good ideas I just would like to see some tangible results of growth and optimism soon.

TakeThat7 Wed 30-Oct-24 18:47:54

I am so depressed that labour can just
stop the right to buy like that it's like the only good thing that might have happened for me has been taken O was always earning minimum wage

Everyone wants decent health and education services but no one wants to pay for them. I thought it was a good budget and Reeves gave a confident speech. I don’t mind paying extra tax if it’s spent on public services.

👏👏

Tax evasion or avoidance?

Avoidance - schemes devising tax evasion😄😄. Now there’s a thought!

Although it isn’t unknown but the divisors generally do not make their existence known.

They have gone for the easy option

They should be going after the tax dodging likes of Amazon etc., (as should the previous Government)

Reeves announced that the treasury is funding the revenue for extra compliance officers, as well as inspectors to go after those devising tax avoidance schemes.

There were free bus passes for children going to school when I was a schoolgirl, but I didn’t qualify. You had to live three miles from the school to get one, and I didn’t, well not as the crow flies anyway. That was how it was measured, by crow. Unfortunately, I didn’t fly, so had to go by bus, it was two bus journeys from home to school. My parents gave me the bus fares, but if I managed to use my friend’s bus pass, I could save the money and spend it on sweets for us.

How very bad as I was as a twelve year old!

The govt are apparently committed to Making Tax Digital and propose to expand the roll out to those with incomes over £20k. This will increase the number of people having to complete tax returns and may result in an increased tax take.

How will it increase the number of people having to complete tax returns? There are clear rules as to who has to complete a tax return, digital or not.

Many people want the penny and the bun, and don’t see any irony in complaining about both depleted public services and a budget which affects them, but improves the very services they complain about, going so far as to say more should be done, but don’t want to pay for it, Sometimes if you didn’t laugh you’d cry.

Improving the life of my DGD will not immediately become apparent when her bus fare becomes £30pw. Easier if you live in an IGO area, but she doesn’t.

I was surprised that bus fares have to be paid for to attend FE College here; when I asked if DGD should get a pass, DS said no, they had enquired, even though the local schools have no sixth form.
Another expense for parents.

It's not just wherever you are. 16-18 year olds have to pay for transport everywhere.

Yet 16-18 year olds must remain in education or training.

Rather that than sat in their rooms on their ps5 or whatever, tik tok maybe !! Education and apprenticeships what is wrong with that.

It is compulsory to stay in some form of education until 18 these days. Even apprenticeships will involve some element of class based learning. In any case, many 16 year olds don't want the limitations of apprenticeships and aspire to Level 3 qualifications.

Precisely.

So their parents have to pay bus fares and to keep them when some may have left school and found a job at 16 previously and contributed to family coffers.

If education is compulsory by law then bus or train passes should continue to be provided.

I don’t think a penny off a pint is going to attract more customers, to be honest. I’ve no idea why she did that. It won’t make any difference to anyone.

I thought similarly - one whole penny saved.

Why bother?

Is anyone going to avoid one pub for another on the basis of 1p?

There must be a rationale behind it of course, but I don't know what that is.

Glad there is to be a crackdown on shoplifting.

To be fair, the Welsh think the same of everyone who lives the other side of Offa's Dyke.

Jeremy Clarkson has highlighted the huge increase in bureaucracy that farmers have to deal with these days.

It never ceases to amaze me that governments do not seem to support farmers, perhaps because politicians have no real clue how the food and drink arrives on their plates in the subsidised restaurants in the H of C.
They all seem to takd food production for granted.

Casdon Wed 30-Oct-24 18:00:57

They think he’s a t…..r round here GrannyGravy13, but to be fair, they are mainly sheep farmers so not known to mince their words.

Re the farming community - I wonder what Jeremy Clarkson will have to say about it all. Be interesting.

To misquote Mrs Merton, who cares what the millionaire Jeremy Clarkson thinks?

According to the Farmers Unions, Jeremy Clarkson has done more for farmers, farming and rural affairs through his three TV series than Country File has done in all the time it’s been ion air.

Something which our farming friends agree with.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 30-Oct-24 17:55:33

As a SME owner, I can only assume that RR has no idea about small businesses, how they work, how difficult it is in the current climate, nor is she concerned that this budget will make employers think twice, thrice or more before taking in any new employees.

Farmers are incensed by RR’s ignorance on all things rural. This budget will put up food prices for the end user (us) as you can bet your last £ that supermarkets will pass on all price increases.
