About Donald Trump.

They have both tried to cover up this morning by saying they are looking forward to meeting him and working with him.

What absolute creeps!

should you apologise if you are talking the truth?

Ahem! It would appear to matter which 'side' you're on. It's Ok (apparently) for Badenoch to mouth off about people with mental health issues or autism, but not OK to give an opinion about her or one of her allies.

I’m not sure if we will be stuck with Starmer for much longer, he's become such a liability to the Labour party..He’s not a politician and never was, and as for diplomacy - he is the labour parties very own Tommy Robinson..And now he has to try and repair the damage done to US. Relations..lol…
I think that ship has sailed…..

Comparing Starmer with Tommy Robinson is IMO ludicrous.

But thats the trouble they both thought he wouldn't get re-elected and said things about him like first year students showing off at Uni…Now they both have to eat humble pie..Not a good look for UK prime minister and an MP.

Am I right in thinking this was a comment from 7 years ago?

Dreadful person. Self-serving and aggressive about everything. Seems very immature about life and lacking empathy.

She changed something on Harriet Hartman’s website in 2008, before KB was in politics.

She was elected on to the London Assembly in 2012, then stood for MP and won in 2017.

Harriet Harman forgave her when KB confessed when asked what was the worse thing you have ever done in an interview in 2018.

Not true. Harriet Harman was very much in politics at the time.

She became a London Assembly member by default. She wasn't elected. She was on the list and became a member when Suella Braverman became an MP. She was also very lucky to be selected to stand as an MP. The hot favourite was found out at the last minute to have been involved in some expenses scandal and the selection committee didn't want to touch him.

It was KB who wasn’t an elected politician in 2007 not Harriet Harman growstuff apologies if my post was unclear.

Sorry, I should read more carefully.

lilydily9 Thu 07-Nov-24 12:38:19

An apology would be a start but I doubt it will cut it. Trump won't forget what has been said about him. Lammy should be replaced as soon as possible. Unfortunately we are stuck with Starmer for the foreseeable.

Student politics.

I think it is very valid to want to know a background and relevant life experiences especially including past work roles to see what our MP's bring to their life as parliamentarians,

but as escaped just said above, it can reach ludicrous proportions. However when someone deliberately misrepresents themselves its bound to be called out.

Wyllow3 Thu 07-Nov-24 11:51:18

She claimed that Labour were neglecting Defence, as well as claiming that Reeves hadn't mentioned it.
Starmer pointed out that this government has given Defence a bigger % rise than at any time in the Conservative 14 years.

I realise that many Gransnetters do care about where people went to school though and what their parents did too.

And it is very shortsighted to do so.
What I don't understand is why politicians need to one day identify themselves with a particular class or group of people through their own miniscule experiences just to prove certain common points., then the next day they flip flop to another group.

I realise that many Gransnetters do care about where people went to school though and what their parents did too.

The issue is that Badenoch invented a backstory to suit her narrative that she was a poor immigrant from Nigeria, who had experienced a tough childhood and made it the top through her own aspiration and merit. The truth is very far from that.

It seems she has a flexible relationship with the truth. Yesterday, she mentioned in PMQs that Reeves hadn't mentioned defence in the budget, but the truth is Reeves mentioned it a number of times. Then there was the claim about a trade agreement with Canada, which the Canadians had never heard about ...

Joan123 Thu 07-Nov-24 11:22:27

I was shocked that she was political point scoring at such a challenging moment!

Coconut Thu 07-Nov-24 11:17:21

All politicians ever do is insult each other in a playground mentality…. So what’s new about this ??

madalene Thu 07-Nov-24 11:07:16

Perhaps I’m unusual, but I don’t really care what background people have so long as they do their job properly and diplomatically. I didn’t care that Cameron, Osborne, and Johnson went to Eton, or that Starmer’s father was a toolmaker, or that Thatcher went to a grammar school and her father was a grocer, or that May’s father was a vicar, or where any of them went to school or what their fathers or mothers did, or what their background was. I care that they are not criminals and can do the job they were elected for properly.

We know.
Already sussed her ages ago.

Post appeared in between, I meant Kemi Badenoch not Harriet Harman.

Although many of them try to pretend they are/were something they're not, as if they think they will appeal to the common man or woman that way.

Don't forget that Badenoch became one of the common people when she worked in MacDonalds when she was in the sixth form. grin

Yes. She suddenly became working class.

Patronising or what!

MaizieD I was just posting ^the timeline of events^

Here's another:

“Growing up in Nigeria I saw real poverty – I experienced it, including living without electricity and doing my homework by candlelight, because the state electricity board could not provide power, and fetching water in heavy, rusty buckets from a borehole a mile away, because the nationalised water company could not get water out of the taps,” she told the chamber. “Unlike many colleagues born since 1980, I was unlucky enough to live under socialist policies.”

True or not? She allegedly had a privileged childhood although, when she was a young child in the 1980s, it was a turbulent time in Nigeria.

Nigeria did not have a socialist government when Badenoch was a child. This is the 'spiel' she came out with when she was first selected. She portrayed her backstory as a rags to riches tale, but it was a myth.
