The Guardian offers counselling to staff after ‘upsetting’ Trump election result!

The Guardian is offering counselling to staff as it vowed to support its workforce after Donald Trump’s “upsetting” US election victory this week.

In an email to staff, The Guardian’s editor Katharine Viner said the election had “exposed alarming fault lines on many fronts” and urged journalists based in the UK to contact colleagues in the US “to offer your support”.

I’m glad I don’t give The Guardian any of my money if they waste it to coddle employees in this way!

P.s. I just meant ‘in general’. 😁

No eazybee there’s been no attempt by the mods to shut down this discussion. Which is good. Shows they are allowing robust debate - providing it is respectful which I always am. I have never once used a derogatory term about ANY poster. Ever.

I get name called so often because I happen to support Farage & Trump.
Fortunately for me the moderators have decided I’m allowed an opinion. It’s no good shutting down debate just because some posters hold differing opinions. Agree.

I have not read all 12 pages of this thread, but I am shocked to think that some posters have tried to close it down because they disagree with your opinions.

Has that actually happened, ie that the thread has been threatened with closure?

I do not intend to get in a my feelings are more hurt than yours spat as it is pointless.

We are grown ups, we have different views, mine are different from some and the same as some.

I do not and would never assert my views are correct or better and more valid than any one else’s, they are at times just different!

I have no need to get on my high horse (actually he is in his stable warm and cosy) over an election in a foreign country.

MissAdventure Fri 08-Nov-24 13:05:45

I don't think counselling is needed for "upset".
I find the idea ridiculous.

Ok but you posted before that comment.

I agree with your last post Cossy even if not any of your other comments.
I don’t think it’s anything to do with people being ‘ proud lefties’ or ‘proud righties’ for that matter it’s about The Guardian offering counselling and support to journalists over the DT win. Other newspapers and most good sized businesses offer counselling for mental health issues / bereavement/ and so on but not as far as we know cos the President of the US is not our choice.
It makes some of us think that counselling has gone down a rabbit hole when it should be offered for serious things.
Otherwise we’ll become timid beings needing milk and cookies and hand holding for anything we don’t like or agree with.
Counselling has its place in society but not for any mortal thing.

Yes, you are right! I shouldn’t have called anyone’s response “rubbish”, no excuse except it was about the comment not the person.

We are a very divided society. Some are distressed and frightened because Trump has been elected. Some are happy and are rejoicing. We see it here. It is a dangerous thing. Most people think they are good people and are in the right. They can then come to see people on the other side as less than human and people can do terrible things to each other.

There’s middle ground tho, I was disappointed at the DT win even if I saw it coming ages ago but don’t go around wringing my hands or being frightened.I suspect most people here fall into that category.

@GrannyGravy. When I said about a nasty side in this thread, I'm talking about the insulting language like snowflakes, lacking backbone against some of us. What insulting language has been used towards you?

No, you were correct first time. 😊

WellsRose Fri 08-Nov-24 12:54:18

Oreo why do you keep ignoring the threats of violence against journalists?

WellsRose Fri 08-Nov-24 12:53:09

What if there are US based Guardian journalists?

LizzieDrip for the hard of thinking ?

Do you think it’s ok to call posters with a different view names?

I have read the entire thread and there are posts questioning the electorate who voted for POTUS Trump.

(Whilst DT is President Elect his correct title is POTUS Trump, the same as all past US Presidents, it is a sign of respect to the position of President)

newnanny Fri 08-Nov-24 12:51:14

Don't be ridiculous. What do you think Trump will do come to the UK and seek out people working at the Guardian to shout at them?

Wyllow3 Fri 08-Nov-24 12:48:30

Just to point out that no one used the word "'Fascist" on this thread until it was used as an "accusation".

Yes it is important to read the whole thread...

I would be delighted Oreo if now Trump has a decisive win, he will not pursue the threats he made.

I agree. The problem comes when we pile on in a personal way. Probably better not to call other's view rubbish or OTT but dispute on facts when we can establish them.

“I just do not get the hyperbole over this election, which was won fair and square by the Democrats” GrannyGravy

I will repeat, and then keep my promise to myself to remove myself from this thread…

This thread is NOT about people disagreeing with the election outcome.

It is about the very real threats made to journalists by President Elect Donald Trump and, as a consequence of these threats, journalists feeling afraid to speak truth to power.

I can’t put it any more simply than that … for the hard of thinking! 👋

Life and discussion forums would be boring if we all agreed surely? A virtual echo chamber ….

I don’t really understand why you support these folks, but it is your right to do so, and long may that last!

Whoever the UK has in govt., has never stated some of the horrifying things some other countries leaders have and I’m grateful we can have our own views, beliefs and moral compass and free to express them.

Long may it last!

I’ve never stated otherwise, not have I thought up insulting names for those on the other sides of the political spectrum.

I have friends and family with totally opposing political views, I still love them, I respect their choices, I simply don’t agree with much of their views. They are kind and empathic people.

Yes and recently he suggested that if someone wanted to shoot through the assembled journalists, that'd be OK with him. Personally I'm devastated he got in. We are already seeing the incels and misogynists being emboldened online with their 'Your body, my choice' slogan. Which is chilling.
