You couldn't make it up.

Never was a clichè more appropriate........

Obviously not many have been to vicars' tea parties!

David49 Sun 24-Nov-24 13:58:35

Grans net is like a vicars tea party where the vast majority are polite, from my viewpoint there is a lot of ultra liberal and emotional sentiment that is never going to be realistic.
Today all the nonsense about wanting a new GE is a pretty good example.

(that was to T Gunner)

I suggest you just have a good read around the political threads and make your mind up.

Perhaps better to start joining in on topics in "bits" rather than a post with huge list of topics (that do come up on GN) some very controversial, ending in a sentence that someone could have reported as anti-muslim.
(GN doesn't tolerate racism, but the moderators decide, not us)

M0nica Sun 24-Nov-24 13:43:55

Well, I have always shown myself very willing to keep playing the game in a conversation with someone I disagree with.

I agree MOnica!

I thought these forums were here to give your point of view and that is my point of view so if you do not agree with it there is no reason to get nasty about it. It seems free speech has really gone down the drain. I didn't expect this on Gransnet.

Sorry, shouldn't laugh but yes, live and learn!

Hi Allira,

Are these the type of posters that are regularly on Gransnet because if they are I don't think I will last long. I joined to give MY points of view but also be open minded enough to listen to other posters points of view but it seems that if my points of view don't agree with these types of people then they take their bat and ball home.

It takes all sorts, thank goodness I do not know them personally.

Allira Sun 24-Nov-24 12:45:35

discussion on GN sound like a vicar's tea party.

I disagree. Gransnet is getting much worse.

No, this free speech in action. I think some people are very 'delicate' and see 'nastyness' where there is none and where, according to what I read is posted on the internet makes discussion on GN sound like a vicar's tea party.

Free speech is both the freedom to say what you believe and the freedom of others to challenge your views and say why they disagree with you.

I wish Trump was our prime minister, he would sort our little country out in a week.

The labour government are taking money off farmers but sending millions and millions of pounds to other countries to help with their farming. They have taken the pensioners winter fuel allowance off them but pensioners who are living in warm climates after emigrating still get theirs. They are giving free housing in hotels along with all the perks, mobile phones, food, free bus passes to illegal immigants but letting their own British born and bred citizens freeze, sleep on the streets and starve because of the high energy bills and taxes.

I honestly think this labour government do not like the British born and bred people and want our country to become a Muslim one.

You can source all this info online.

Gosh, yes!
Every farm would be turned into a golf course.

I am so tempted to say to Trump supporters in the UK a similar thing the brexiters said to the remainers re the referendum.

If you like him and his cohorts so much, move there!

Already those that voted for him are finding they have made a mistake. They only now realise that, for example, Obamacare is the same as the Affordable Care Act and they could lose benefits. They didn't realise that tariffs would make the goods they buy more expensive. They don't understand why friends and family members do not want to associate with them anymore.

LizzieDrip Sat 23-Nov-24 14:12:45

I agree with your comment M0nica NOT with TopGunner’s.

Wouldn’t want any confusion there!

Meanwhile The Republican-controlled US House on Thursday passed a bill that would give the government broad powers to punish non-profit organizations it deems support “terrorism”

The bill, which gives the treasury the power to strip non-profits it claims support “terrorism” of their tax-exempt status, does not require the treasury to adhere to any evidentiary standard in releasing its findings.

Although groups targeted could appeal to the IRS or the courts for review, simply being identified as a supporter of terrorism could have a chilling effect on advocacy groups, critics warn.

It could be used on any group the government deems a “threat” however including groups that Trump defines as “the enemy within”, Ie Civil Liberties groups, charity groups

If there is another world war, you can blame Biden & Starmer for that one, if you get chance 🙄

If there was one issue that had cross party support under BJ, it was Ukraine. BJ actively became the No 1 NATO pushing help for Ukraine (as I suspect you know very well) both weapons as well as taking refugees into UK homes.
But this has come up on 2 other threads, and this thread is about the Musk/Trump government and possible effects on it.

Graceless Sat 23-Nov-24 13:51:55

What happens in the USA affects the whole world including the UK. Remember "no man is an island "

ronib Sat 23-Nov-24 13:39:24

Surely NATO is in the thick of it too? Plus of course Boris Johnson? Mt61

I think "cutting waste" if done, if it can be done, has to be done with substantial political knowledge and great care because many departments run complex health, education, welfare related schemes that are based on a balance between federal and state.

. It's not like taking over Twitter and deciding who to sack, it's a big fundamental change of government. There is no way Musk has the experience or knowledge to do this.

MaizieD Sat 23-Nov-24 09:00:03

David49

He has no more of a political agenda than Murdoch he backs the party that reflects his opinions and uses his media to promote them. He has been given the task of making government more efficient, I don’t see that as political, don’t we all want to eliminate waste in government.

What Musk has said he will do won't make US government more efficient . It will totally destroy it.

But I doubt if he'll get very far with his plans.

MaizieD Sat 23-Nov-24 08:57:03

Musk isn't eligible to run for US president. He is South African isn't he? Certainly not a US citizen by birth.

I wonder if Trump's supporters would go so far as to let him overturn that requirement in order to enable Musk to succeed him?

Though I suspect it's more likely that the pair will have fallen out before then.

Visgir1 Sat 23-Nov-24 08:31:38

It's a case of "careful what you wish for" the winning majority of Americans wanted Trump. My DIL is an American. she is gutted he got back in.
I think Musk's placing himself to follow Trump as President, it's money that swings it in the USA sadly.

Very succinctly put and I agree 100%, particularly re Liz “Lettuce” Truss.

Ha a name caller, still OK to do this from the left, but not from those who dislike our current Gov. We get lambasted re starmer the farmer harmer.
